If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Jesus said: “I am the light of the world. No follower of mine shall walk in darkness.” A candle is a reminder; It recalls Jesus, the one true light. Whom the darkness could not extinguish A candle is a parable; Burning itself out, it gives light to others A candle is a symbol; It speaks of light, hope, warmth and love A candle is a sign; It reminds us of the prayers of God’s people. Entrance Rite PRELUDE
HYMN 106 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness! God hath brought his Israel into joy from sadness: loosed from Pharoah's bitter yoke Jacob's sons and daughters, led them with unmoistened foot through the Red Sea waters. 'Tis the spring of souls today: Christ hath burst his prison, and from three days' sleep in death as a sun hath risen; all the winter of our sins, long and dark, is flying from his light, to whom we give laud and praise undying. Now the queen of seasons, bright with the day of splendour, with the royal feast of feasts, comes its joy to render; comes to glad Jerusalem, who with true affection welcomes in unwearied strains Jesu's resurrection.

Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. Acts 4:32-35 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Antiphon It is like the dew of Hermon that falls upon the hills of Zion. For there the Lord has ordained the blessing: life for evermore. Antiphon Psalm 133
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of John. We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life - this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us - we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 1:1-2:2

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord.
Deacon People
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. John 20:19-31 The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. But chiefly we are bound to praise thee for the glorious resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us, and hath taken away the sin of the world; who by death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again hath restored us to everlasting life. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.
Allll
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY What a week! People have been asking if I have recovered from Holy Week, and the answer is: “No! How can anyone ever recover from the revelation of Christ Risen from the dead!?” It was a joy to walk through Holy Week in this community, welcoming newcomers and people who come to church only occasionally, as well as reconnecting with people we haven’t seen for a while and saying goodbye to ones we love. The holy drama of God’s love for God’s people continues. This past Wednesday we trialed the first Wednesday of Open Church. What was that? Well, at 10:00 am the main doors to the church were opened for people to come in to pray, find some quiet, or simply admire the building. We met neighbours, people who work in the area and even some tourists. The Mass went ahead as normal at 12:10 pm, and by 2:00 pm when I shut the front doors, I had met 24 people who don’t normally come into the church simply because our doors are usually closed. What an encouraging sign!
The open doors completely change the posture of the whole building, and over time I hope that we will be able to have them open more often to allow people to come in and see what the Holy Spirit is up to. Isn’t it good to know that we do not have to do it all by ourselves?
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
One of the things I observed is that many people like to come in and just stand for a few moments to light a candle and be still. I think most people find a light in the darkness a comfort, and there is something about the flicker of a single flame that seems to hold us, and give a path to prayer and meditation. Our open doors cast light into our neighbourhood, just one way we can be a beacon of light this Easter Season. I am currently surrounded by the twinkling reflective light of many foil egg wrappers on my desk.

FORMATION: PILGRIM: A COURSE FOR THE CHRISTIAN JOURNEY Thur. April 19, 6 pm - 8 pm (April 26, May 3, May 10, May 17, May 24) Sun. April 22, 12:30 pm – 2 pm (April 29, May 6, May 13, May 20, May 27) What do Christians believe? Come find out and refresh yourself with this six-week course exploring the basics of the Christian faith in the Anglican Church. A study guide accompanies the series and a donation of $5 is welcomed to help support our formation programming at St. James’. This first book in the Follow Stage, Turning to Christ, explores the heart of Christian belief through the six questions candidates are asked at baptism. So what difference does being a Christian make? Well, the journey of life that ends in death becomes a holy pilgrimage that ends in life. Christians believe that in Jesus, God has walked this earth before us, and that with Jesus as our companion and guide we can travel through life differently. This course is designed to help you discover this Christian way of life. It unpacks the basic message and teaching of the Christian faith, and also shows you how to pray and how to live like Jesus. It does this in a way that is reflective and conversational. No one will force the pace. But this course will change the perspective of your life; it might also change its direction. All are welcome. Light refreshments are provided. Please register with Mother Lucy as space is limited lucy@stjames.bc.ca You need only come to either the Thursday or Sunday sessions.
