Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.

You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Someone wrote recently “Joy might be a greater scandal than evil, suffering or death”. [David Ford]. This is what I have been moved by in Christian communities around the world who face the most devastating of conditions. Their certainty that Jesus is alive enables them to face all horrors with joy. Not happiness, but joy. Joy can exist alongside mental illness, depression, bereavement, fear, because the joy of Christ comes from knowing that nothing and no one less than God has the last word. I remember sitting in a room with the Bishop who had come over from Pakistan soon after the attack in September on a church in Peshawar. I asked how Christians were coping with the fear that such attacks brought, and wondered if there had been anyone in church the week following the attack. “Oh yes” the bishop replied, “there were three times as many people the next week”. Such action is made possible only by the resurrection. The persecuted church flourishes because of the resurrection. I think of women who I met earlier this year who have survived unspeakable sexual violence, yet who lift their arms in prayer and praise to God. I think of teenagers I met in Luton who have hope and joy, in lives that were dominated by self-hatred and harm. This has only been made possible because Jesus is alive. The announcement that Jesus is alive changes everything; not simplistically or even instantly do circumstances and situations change. But it changes us. It gives us hope where we were in despair, faith where we were lost, light where we were in darkness, joy where we were entirely in sorrow. “The one who was dead is now alive” —Archbishop Justin's Easter sermon, Sunday 20, April 2014 http://www.archbishopofcanterbury.org/articles.php/5303/the-one-who-was-dead-is-now-alivearchbishop-justins-easter-sermon#sthash.9Xwbw3VF.tDOSu081.dpuf

Rite of Sprinkling With Holy Water The Rite of Sprinkling with Holy Water is a ceremony that traditionally takes place before the beginning of High Mass on Sundays. This ceremony goes back to at least the 9th century, but was for the most part done away with during the reforms of the liturgy in the 1960’s. We have revived it here at St. James’ for the Easter season as a remembrance of our baptism. As the Altar Party and the Sacred Ministers enter, the antiphon proper to the Easter season for this ceremony, the “Vidi Aquam” (from the Latin, “I beheld water”) taken from Ezekiel 47.1-2, 12, is sung. The Altar is first sprinkled, then the clergy and servers, and then the Celebrant goes throughout the Church sprinkling all the people with the holy water which was blessed last night in the Baptismal Font at the Great Vigil of Easter. The ceremony is concluded back at the Altar with versicles and responses, and a prayer, as follows below.

It is customary to bow to the Celebrant as they come near you and to sign yourself with the the cross as you are sprinkled with the Holy Water. VIDI AQUAM (See facing page) Celebrant All Celebrant All Celebrant All Celebrant

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd, "You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know - this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. For David says concerning him, 'I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh will live in hope. PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand I shall not fall. My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope. Antiphon For you will not abandon me to the grave, nor let your holy one see the Pit. You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Antiphon Psalm 16:8-11

EPISTLE READING

Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Peter Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith - being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire - may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:3-9

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your

finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. John 20:19-31

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES The Easter messages of our Christian leaders offer us inspiration for living the resurrected life of Christ in our world and daily lives: “The church ‘stands under a calling to work as far as it can for the unity and harmony of the human race. Its place in the conflicts of the world is not on the sidelines, scolding or weeping, but instead at the heart of those conflicts working to see reconciliation overcome enmity… Perhaps the Church is never more truly itself than when it is busy reconciling enemies, healing rifts, enabling harmony, taking a cross-shaped posture in the world.’” (Primate Fred Hiltz) “In Jesus, love has triumphed over hatred, mercy over sinfulness, goodness over evil, truth over falsehood, life over death… In every human situation, marked by frailty, sin and death, the Good News is no mere matter of words, but a testimony to unconditional and faithful love: it is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering others, being close to those crushed by life’s troubles, sharing with the needy, standing at the side of the sick, elderly and the outcast.” (Pope Francis)

“We were resurrected alongside Jesus Christ and experience the end

of times as present reality and present reality as the end of times. The resurrection permeates our being and fills us with joy… We continue the work of the Apostles. We convey to the world the message of the resurrection.” (Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew) “The meaning of our whole existence is to be witnesses to the new life that is offered by Jesus Christ… The new life of Christ has broken into our world, it cannot be contained, nor restricted, nor managed. The church exists to show by its life and work the transforming power that has been set free in the world. All that we need to do is respond in faith and receive the gift of that life.” (Archbishop Justin Welby) “‘Don’t hold onto to me.’ Jesus says to Mary Magdalene, the first person he speaks to after his resurrection. He says this to her and to us not to be insensitive and cruel but because God forever goes before us into the future and asks us, needs us to follow him there ready, as brothers and sisters of the Lord of Life, ready and empty handed, empty handed and ready.” (Bishop Melissa Skelton)

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK Having looked at the cross we’re now called to “look through the cross.” That’s actually the title of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s recommended book for Lent this year. In it we are reminded that the church “stands under a calling to work as far as it can for the unity and harmony of the human race. Its place in the conflicts of the world is not on the sidelines, scolding or weeping, but instead at the heart of those conflicts working to see reconciliation overcome enmity… Perhaps the Church is never more truly itself than when it is busy reconciling enemies, healing rifts, enabling harmony, taking a cross-shaped posture in the world.” A significant measure of our integrity for such work is the extent to which we ourselves truly regard one another, all else aside, as “brothers and sisters for whom Christ died.” (1 Corinthians 8:11) A Holy Week message from the Primate Fred Hiltz, Archbishop and Primate, April 14, 2014

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE TRAINED IN FIRST AID? The Board of Trustees is developing a list of parishioners trained in first aid that could be called upon if there is an emergency in the church. As we are fortunate to have emergency responders, (fire, rescue, ambulance) nearby, normally within 4-5 minutes, having a list of persons with first aid knowledge would ensure that we have an immediate response and could provide accurate information to the responders on their arrival. If you have the training, or are willing to sign up for such training, please advise your liaison, the office, or any member of the trustees.

DIDO’S “DID YOU KNOW?”

http://www.anglican.ca/news/a-holy-week-messagefrom-the-primate/3003428/ The Easter messages of our Christian leaders converge with a call to us to engage the world in the power of the resurrection (see Archbishop of Canterbury “A Reflection” and Archbishop Fred Hiltz “Quote of this Week”):

Primate Fred Hiltz

“Enable us to protect the vulnerable, especially children, women and the elderly, who are at times exploited and abandoned… Comfort all those who cannot celebrate this Easter with their loved ones because they have been unjustly torn from their affections, like the many persons, priests and laity, who in various parts of the world have been kidnapped.

We ask you, Lord Jesus, to put an end to all war and every conflict, whether great or small, ancient or recent. We pray in a particular way for Syria, beloved Syria, that all those suffering the effects of the conflict can receive needed humanitarian aid and that neither side will again use deadly force, especially against the defenseless civil population, but instead boldly negotiate the peace long awaited and long overdue! Jesus, Lord of glory, we ask you to comfort the victims of fratricidal acts of violence in Iraq and to sustain the hopes raised by the resumption of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. We beg for an end to the conflicts in the Central African Republic and a halt to the brutal terrorist attacks in parts of Nigeria and the acts of violence in South Sudan.” Easter Urbi et Orbi Message of Pope Francis http://www.news.va/en/news/easter-urbi-et-orbimessage-of-pope-francis-full-t

COMMEMORATION Saint Philip and Saint James Apostles May 1 Philip is named in the first three Gospels whenever they list the twelve apostles, but he plays no active role and has no voice in their accounts. This changes in the Fourth Gospel, which presents Philip as a leading figure in the circle of disciples. He was the third person to be specially called by Jesus, and he in turn brought his friend Nathanael into the company of the Lord. In John’s account of the feeding of the five thousand, Philip voices doubts felt by the other disciples, and his questions set the stage for Jesus to demonstrate his power. Likewise at the Last Supper, Philip’s remarks help to make the Farewell Discourses a teaching dialogue between Master and disciples. A later tradition of the Church says that Philip eventually settled in Asia Minor, where he lived to a ripe old age. James, the other apostle we commemorate today, is an even more shadowy figure. The Gospels list him as the son of Alphae′us, but he is usually known as James “the Less,” to distinguish him from two other disciples of the same name. Mark’s Gospel also mentions James “the Younger,” who watched the crucifixion with his mother Mary and the other women; he is traditionally identified with the apostle we honour today. Philip and James are remembered together because of an accident of ecclesiastical history. In the sixth century the Church of Rome acquired some relics of James and placed them in a reliquary which already held some remains of Philip. This reliquary was placed in a new church, which was dedicated jointly to the two Apostles on May first in the year 560.

As bishop of Alexandria from the year 328 until his death forty-five years later, he defended the faith of the Church against a heresy known as Arianism. The Arians taught that God’s only Son, the Word who became flesh as Jesus Christ, was not truly divine. Athanasius realized that this doctrine undercut the Christian assurance of salvation, because it meant that humans had no way of sharing in the very life and glory of God. But because the Word who became flesh was indeed true God, “one in Being with the Father,” all may enter into his own eternal union with the Father and the Holy Spirit. That is why Athanasius was so harsh against the Arians — he was fighting for the reality and the fullness of our salvation. But the Arians had the support of several Roman emperors, and many other bishops saw nothing wrong in trying to reach a compromise which the Arians could accept. Athanasius stood firm — at times he even seemed to stand alone, and “Athanasius against the world” became a by-word of the age. He endured five periods of exile, yet his popularity among the citizens of Alexandria was so great that the Emperor once had to recall him in order to avoid insurrection in the city. The Church itself finally vindicated his stalwart witness, and it is due to him, more than to any other teacher, that we still have the Nicene Creed.
