The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins.

We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection FOLLOW ME You say follow me, but I’m not sure where you’re going. You say follow me, as if you’re leading me out of the chaos and confusion, but the closer I follow, the thicker the clouds of darkness seem to be and the less comfortable my life gets. You say follow me, but insist I leave “me” behind. You say follow me, but wait just a minute. Let me look you over, examine you and ask, “just who are you?” You say follow me, and my heart knows it’s what I was born to do. You say follow me, but my head has different plans. It sees the storm clouds you’re brewing and the confrontation that arises wherever you go. My mind makes up excuses, finds ways to dismiss you and remain in the lead. But you say follow me, and I see the goodness and living water that flows from the river you’re providing. I see the beauty of your face and if what you say is true – it’s the greatest story the world will ever know. But you say follow me and it scares me because there’s still some doubt. But does that doubt have anything to do with you or because I know accepting you comes at a cost, knowing that I’ll have to die to myself and admit I’m lost? You say follow me. Grant that I may be willing to take up my cross. Justin Farley https://alongthebarrenroad.com/2015/01/06/follow-me-christian-poem/ 4 | HIGH MASS

Entrance Rite PRELUDE O Sons & Daughter, Let Us Sing — Sander VanderPloeg

HYMN

216 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, your sweetest notes employ, the paschal victory to hymn in strains of holy joy. For Judah's lion bursts his chains, crushing the serpent's head; and cries aloud through death's domains to wake the imprisoned dead. Devouring depths of hell their prey at his command restore; his ransomed hosts pursue their way where Jesus goes before. Triumphant in his glory now to him all power is given; to him in one communion bow all saints in earth and heaven. All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost to thee, while endless ages run.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

All

Let us pray. O God, thy Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread. Open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. Peter addressed the people, "You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made this man walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you. And now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah would suffer. Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out." Acts 3:12-19

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause; you set me free when I am hardpressed; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. "You mortals, how long will you dishonour my glory; how long will you worship dumb idols and run after false gods?" Antiphon

Know that the Lord does wonders for the faithful; when I call upon the Lord, he will hear me. Tremble, then, and do not sin; speak to your heart in silence upon your bed. Antiphon Offer the appointed sacrifices and put your trust in the Lord. Many are saying, "Oh, that we might see better times!" Lift up the light of your countenance upon us, O Lord. Antiphon You have put gladness in my heart, more than when grain and wine and oil increase. I lie down in peace; at once I fall asleep; for only you, Lord, make me dwell in safety. Antiphon Psalm 4

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of John. See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Everyone who commits sins is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Everyone who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 1 John 3:1-7

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus himself stood among the disciples and said to them, "Peace be with you." They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. He said to them, "Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate in their presence. Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you - that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things." Luke 24:36B-48

HYMN

Stand The People sing the hymn while the gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 104 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing At the Lamb's high feast we sing praise to our victorious King, who hath washed us in the tide flowing from his piercèd side; praise we him, whose love divine gives the guests his blood for wine, gives his body for the feast, Love the victim, Love the priest. Where the paschal blood is poured, death's dark angel sheathes his sword; Israel's hosts triumphant go through the wave that drowns the foe. Christ, the Lamb whose blood was shed, paschal victim, paschal bread; with sincerity and love eat we manna from above. Mighty victim from on high, powers of hell beneath thee lie; death is broken in the fight, thou hast brought us life and light. Now thy banner thou dost wave, conquering Satan and the grave. See the prince of darkness quelled; heaven’s bright gates are open held.

Paschal triumph, paschal joy, only sin can this destroy; from sin's death do thou set free souls re-born, dear Lord, in thee. Hymns of glory, songs of praise, Father, unto thee we raise; risen Lord, all praise to thee, ever with the Spirit be. SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. But chiefly we are bound to praise thee for the glorious resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us, and hath taken away the sin of the world; who by death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again hath restored us to everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying: 16 | HIGH MASS

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Greetings friends. This week I write to you from New York. I am sitting in a Starbucks just off Time Square. I’ve just been to Morning Prayer at St. Mary’s Time Square. I came in here for the coffee, the wifi is an added bonus. The Barista who served me is called Jesús. I know that this is a popular name in Mexico, as it is a predominantly Roman Catholic country. The name Jesus used in the English language originates from the Latin form of the Greek name Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous), a rendition of the Hebrew Yeshua ( ‫) ישוע‬ also having the variants Joshua or Jeshua (Wow! Thanks Wikipedia!). All that said, I met Jesús and figured this was a good place to write the clergy notes. I found this at St. Mary’s and wanted to share it with you given that we are in the Easter season and will be hearing from the book of Acts, the narrative of the early church. “God came among us in the person of Jesus of Nazareth to show us the Way. He came to show us the Way of life, the Way to love. He came to show us the Way beyond what often can be the nightmares of our own

devising and into the dream of God’s intending. That is why, when Jesus called his first followers he did it with the simple words, “follow me.” “Follow me,” he said, “and I will make you fish for people.” Follow me and I will show you how to become more than you ever dreamed you could be. Follow me, and I will help you change the world from the nightmare it often is into the dream that God intends. Jesus came and started a movement; we are the Episcopal branch of the Jesus movement. The truly liberating truth is that Jesus did not come into this world to found a religion, though religious faith is important. Nor did he establish a religious institution or organization, though institutions and organizations can serve his cause. You will not find an organizational chart in the New Testament. Jesus came to continue a movement. Actually, Jesus picked up and took the movement of John the Baptist to a new level. John was part of

Inform. Inspire. Invite. the movement born out of prophets like Amos and Isaiah and Jeremiah. And the prophetic movement was rooted in Moses, who went up to the mountain top.”1 We follow the apostles through the book of Acts this Easter Season, and we are part of that movement, you and I. In recent weeks I have heard stories of you meeting people and inviting them in some way or another to come to St. James’, to take a risk and come seeking God in a new place. You are living into your apostolic ministry! You are part of the Jesus movement! Our church is growing by the grace of God. Mother Lucy 1

This first book in the Follow Stage, Turning to Christ, explores the heart of Christian belief through the six questions candidates are asked at baptism. So what difference does being a Christian make? Well, the journey of life that ends in death becomes a holy pilgrimage that ends in life. Christians believe that in Jesus, God has walked this earth before us, and that with Jesus as our companion and guide we can travel through life differently. This course is designed to help you discover this Christian way of life. It unpacks the basic message and teaching of the Christian faith, and also shows you how to pray and how to live like Jesus. It does this in a way that is reflective and conversational. No one will force the pace. But this course will change the perspective of your life; it might also change its direction. All are welcome. Light refreshments are provided. Please register with Mother Lucy as space is limited lucy@stjames.bc.ca You need only come to either the Thursday or Sunday sessions.
