As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection So moving on to the second dimension of Good News: the world really can change. If the resurrection is about that all-important, decisive, central moment around which the whole history of the world pivoted, turned into a new direction; something has happened within history that has altered what is possible. Someone has made an irreversible breakthrough in the definition of humanity, which can never be undone. To believe that the world can change, that God can turn history on its pivot, is to believe in all sorts of human situations that it is possible for things to be different. And I think that's the basis of all the ways in which Christians are regularly and systematically a nuisance to people who want a tidy world. The Roman Empire was, in many ways a very efficient and comprehensive and well-run organization. Unfortunately, it didn't have room for the vision of humanity that the Gospel introduced. And thus Christianity was a major nuisance to the Roman Empire. It was a major nuisance to the Third Reich and a major nuisance to the Soviet Union. It's quite a problem in China, and it's got its moments in the UK [and in Canada] too! And it's because of that sense of 'the way things happen to be is not the way they have to be' that Christians go on being tiresome in society, to say 'well, actually it could be that human beings could live into a bigger space, a higher vocation, a greater glory'. One of the wonderful things that Christianity always says to human beings in absolutely any situation is 'there's more to you than you think'. That's not to buy into the awful, sentimental, modern nonsense about 'you can be anything you want to be' (actually, you can't). It does say 'the way things are is not the way things are destined to be. Under God, with wisdom, discernment and courage, you can find out what changes are possible, because the world can change'. God can be known and served: human beings can live differently: the body of Christ shows us there are ways of living together as human beings that are not tribal, violent, exclusive and anxious. That's quite a bit of Good News to be going on with. It's what St Paul talks about when he writes in Galatians 6 about life in the Spirit. It's about that counter-cultural reality which says to the world around 'it doesn't have to be like this, there's more to it than that.' It's living at odds with the world's systems of rivalries, the world's systems of mutual exclusion and fear. And all of that is about living really, truly and fully in God's future, beginning now. God can rule now, already, the Kingdom has drawn near, is at hand, round the corner, on the doorstep. St Augustine, when he wrote his great treatise on the City of God, said that the Kingdom of God was the lives of the Saints. Holy people show what it's like for God to rule. And I find that a very illuminating way of thinking about the Saints, that they're where the Kingdom of God is and you can name your own saints, not just the ones in the windows or the calendar, but the people you know, who have shown the Kingdom, the possibility of things being different. There is such a thing as humanity. Human history can change. God can rule here and now. Entrance Rite PRELUDE Christ ist erstanden (BWV 627) — J. S. Bach At the entrance of the servers and clergy all stand. HYMN 214 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — The Lamb’s High Banquet Called to Share The Lamb's high banquet called to share, arrayed in garments white and fair, the Red Sea past, we long to sing to Jesus our triumphant king. Upon the altar of the cross, his body hath redeemed our loss; and, tasting of his precious blood, our life is hid with him in God. Protected in the paschal night from the destroying angel's might, in triumph went the ransomed free from Pharaoh's cruel tyranny. Now Christ our passover is slain, the Lamb of God without a stain; his flesh, the true unleavened bread, is freely offered in our stead.
O all-sufficient sacrifice, beneath thee hell defeated lies; thy captive people are set free, and endless life restored in thee.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up." Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner. Acts 9:36-43

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters. Antiphon He revives my soul and guides me along right pathways for his name's sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Antiphon You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over. Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Antiphon Psalm 23
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Book of Revelation to John. After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Revelation 7:9-17

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly." Jesus answered, "I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father's hand. The Father and I are one." John 10:22-30

SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE
It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. But chiefly we are bound to praise thee for the glorious resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us, and hath taken away the sin of the world; who by his death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again hath restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION
Kneel
All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.
Allll
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God.
Allll
And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. ABOUT TODAY’S POSTLUDE English concert organist Simon Preston was a chorister at King’s College, Cambridge, under Boris Ord and the Organ Scholar under David Willcocks. He was appointed suborganist at Westminster Abbey in 1962, a post he held until 1967. He returned as Organist and Master of the Choristers in 1981, after eleven years at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. His published output is small but contains some very effective short choral works and a handful of pieces for the organ. The earliest of these is Alleluyas, which appeared in an anthology of new organ compositions in 1965. Its extrovert style reflects something of his character as a performer and it is clearly influenced by the music of Messiaen. After the initial improvisatory gesture, Alleluyas is built from the juxtaposition of two contrasting ideas—the one fast and spikily rhythmic, the other a series of richly scored jazzy chords. The piece is headed by a quotation from the Liturgy of St James: At his feet the six-winged Seraph; Cherubim with sleepless eye, Veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, Alleluya, Alleluya, Alleluya, Lord most high.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Please remember in your prayers our Diocesan Synod “Love One and Other: Christ’s Body, The Church,” which will meet on 24 and 25 May at the Italian Cultural Centre. Inspired by our Primate’s Heartbeat vision (see anglican.ca) we shall be reflecting on our life together as the Body of Christ, on our mutuality and diversity. Archbishop Fred Hiltz will be with us, giving an opportunity for the Diocese to mark his ministry as Primate, and we shall benefit from his wisdom when considering the Council of General Synod’s “A Word to the Church,” (search on anglican.ca) and its accompanying Affirmations, in relation to the second reading of the motion to amend General Synod Canon XXI – On Marriage in the Church, which will come to General Synod here in July. Bishop Sidney Black will also be at the Synod. He will help us to reflect on our continuing journey in Truth and Reconciliation, and on the movement towards an autonomous Indigenous Church within the Anglican Church of
Canada. General Synod will consider amendments to Canon XXII – The National Indigenous Ministry, which will aid in further facilitating ministry by and with Indigenous communities in the Anglican Church of Canada.
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
A major item of internal business will be Revision of the Constitution and Canons of the Diocese, bringing them into line with contemporary practice. Pray for Melissa, our Archbishop, and your Synod Delegates: your clergy, Kelvin Bee, PJ Janson and Jenny Johnson. On another tack, Mother Lucy is continuing on her way to Compostela, having reached Leon, on the plateau of NW Spain, via St. Jean-Pied-de-Port, Pamplona and Burgos.
