If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. A Reflection And in this he showed me a little thing, the quantity of a hazel nut, lying in the palm of my hand, as it seemed. And it was as round as any ball. I looked upon it with the eye of my understanding, and thought, 'What may this be?' And it was answered generally thus, 'It is all that is made.' I marveled how it might last, for I thought it might suddenly have fallen to nothing for littleness. And I was answered in my understanding: It lasts and ever shall, for God loves it. And so have all things their beginning by the love of God. In this little thing I saw three properties. The first is that God made it. The second that God loves it. And the third, that God keeps it. But what is this to me? Truly, the Creator, the Keeper, the Lover. For until I am substantially “oned to him, I may never have full rest nor true bliss. That is to say, until I be so fastened to him that there is nothing that is made between my God and me. This little thing which is created seemed to me as if it could have fallen into nothing because of its littleness. We need to have knowledge of this, so that we may delight in despising as nothing everything created, so as to love and have uncreated God. For this is the reason why our hearts and souls are not in perfect ease, because here we seek rest in this thing which is so little, in which there is no rest, and we do not know our God who is almighty, all wise and all good, for he is true rest. God wishes to be known, and it pleases him that we should rest in him; for everything which is beneath him is not sufficient for us. And this is the reason why no soul is at rest until it has despised as nothing all things which are created. When it by its will has become nothing for love, to have him who is everything, then is it able to receive spiritual rest. 1st Revelation of Mother Julian of Norwich, Feast Day May 8

Entrance Rite PRELUDE At the entrance of the servers and clergy all stand. HYMN

214 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — The Lamb’s High Banquet Called to Share The Lamb's high banquet called to share, arrayed in garments white and fair, the Red Sea past, we long to sing to Jesus our triumphant king. Upon the altar of the cross, his body hath redeemed our loss; and, tasting of his precious blood, our life is hid with him in God. Protected in the paschal night from the destroying angel's might, in triumph went the ransomed free from Pharaoh's cruel tyranny. Now Christ our passover is slain, the Lamb of God without a stain; his flesh, the true unleavened bread, is freely offered in our stead. O all-sufficient sacrifice, beneath thee hell defeated lies; thy captive people are set free, and endless life restored in thee.

6 | HIGH MASS

We hymn thee rising from the grave, from death returning, strong to save; thine own right hand the tyrant chains, and paradise for us regains. All praise be thine, O risen Lord, from death to endless life restored; all praise to God the Father be and Holy Ghost eternally.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

All

Let us pray. O God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make us perfect in every good work to do thy will, and work in us that which is well-pleasing in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters. Antiphon He revives my soul and guides me along right pathways for his name's sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Antiphon You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over. Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Antiphon Psalm 23

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Peter. For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. 1 Peter 2:19-25

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers." Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." John 10:1-10

HYMN

Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 470 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — To the Name that Brings Salvation To the name that brings salvation, praise and honour let us pay, which for many a generation hid in God's foreknowledge lay; but to every tongue and nation Holy Church proclaims today. Jesus—be that name our treasure; name beyond that words can tell; name of gladness, name of pleasure, ear and heart delighting well; name of sweetness, passing measure, freeing souls from sin’s dark spell.

Name that calls for adoration, name that speaks of victory, name for grateful meditation in the vale of misery, name for loving veneration by the citizens on high. Name that whosoever preacheth makes sweet music to the ear; who in prayer this name beseeches finds divinest comfort near; joyful then the heart that reaches to embrace that name so dear.

Jesu, we thy name adoring, long to see thee as thou art; of thy clemency imploring so to write it in our heart, that hereafter, upward soaring, we with angels may have part. Where thou reignest with the Father, thou the everlasting Son, where with the eternal Spirit threefold God, yet ever one, may our eyes behold the splendour when our earthly course is done.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

Allll

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God.

Allll

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. 26 | THE LITURGY

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY What is the Lectionary?

In our Anglican tradition, like that of the Roman Catholic Church, the Eucharist, the Mass, is a liturgy of both word and sacrament, each of which has its own significance. In the liturgy of the word we feed on scripture, the bible, through listening together to the record of the revelation of Godself, and of God's relationship with God's people, in the Old and New Testaments. The Gospel reading, required at every celebration of the Mass, is treated with particular respect: we stand to face the Gospel-book, which in our Catholic tradition is also censed, to honour Christ speaking to us today through his words recorded in the Gospels. In the liturgy of the sacrament we take and offer bread and wine in obedience to Jesus' command, and we feed on him, the Bread of Life, in holy communion, and so are nourished as the Body of Christ.

In the Anglican and Roman Catholic traditions, the choice of readings is governed by what is called the Lectionary. The Reformed traditions have also begun to recommend the Lectionary, but their ministers still have the right to select readings of their choice. The use of the Lectionary attempts to provide an ordered reading of scripture, and avoids the temptation of a minister or congregation using a limited selection of “favourite” passages. The Anglican Church of Canada's Book of Alternative Services uses the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) based largely on the Roman Catholic Lectionary as revised in the liturgical reform after Vatican II. RCL is a three year cycle, A,B,C, with each of the years having as the guiding Gospel one of the Synoptics, Matthew, Mark, and Luke. We are currently in Year A, that of Matthew. The fourth Gospel,

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

John, which is more reflective and theological than a sequential narrative, is interspersed on Sundays over the three years. The Liturgical Year is divided into two sections: the seasons with their specific focus, Advent, Christmas and Epiphany (known sometimes as the Incarnation season), Lent, Holy Week and Eastertide; the remainder of the year, known as Ordinary Time, the “green” Sundays after Epiphany and before Lent, and the Sundays after Trinity. May 21` there will be an opportunity for members of the congregation to meet our lay Synod Delegates to discuss the agenda. KID’S CORNER This is the fourth Sunday of Easter. In today's Gospel reading, Jesus tells a parable -- The Good Shepherd. He tells about the sheep in a sheep fold. They listen to the shepherd and he knows each of his sheep by name. The sheep will follow him because they feel safe and loved when they are with him.

The Good Shepherd always leads his sheep to the cool clean water and grassy meadows to drink and eat. He always goes first so he can protect his flock. If the Good Shepherd sees something dangerous he will show his sheep the way to safety. When the Good Shepherd returns the sheep to the safety of their fold, he counts them one by one. If he sees one is missing he goes back out and looks everywhere until he finds that lost sheep! Then he carefully puts the sheep over his shoulder and carries it home.

Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He knows all of us by name and loves us. This parable tells us that if we follow him we will be like the sheep in this story -protected, loved and cared for. If we are ever lost Jesus will carry us safely back home. Dear God, please help us to follow Jesus our Good Shepherd knowing he loves us and cares for us. Maybe with your help God we too can lead people safely sometimes, or help someone find their way home to you. Amen.
