Fifth Sunday of Easter | May 14, 2017 | 10:30 AM

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES  To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;  To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;  To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;  To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish;

To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 8:30 am Low Mass, Lady Chapel 9:15 am Coffee Hour, Rectory 10:30 am High Mass, Church 12:00 pm Coffee Hour, Rectory 5:00 pm Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel ______________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. A Reflection MEMORIAL OF CONFIRMATION THE FINGER OF GOD is come upon us by his Holy Spirit. We who are learning the love of a Father, know it; we who have seen Jesus, know it; we upon whom the Holy Spirit has fallen know it; the finger of God has come upon us. Be thou the breath of our breath, O Holy Spirit, the thought of our thought, the light of our light, the love of our love. Bring thy health to our infirmity, thy vigour to our health, thy generosity to our vigour. Let us walk in the Spirit and repose in the Spirit; work with the Spirit, judge after the Spirit; by the Spirit let us make melody in our hearts unto the Spirit, always. If thou dwell in us, O Holy Spirit, we dwell in heaven; we are passed from death unto life; All is light, new light; and love, new love; and power, new power; and fountains of joy, by thy gift, by thy Presence. Verily, the finger of God is come upon us. O Holy Spirit, heal us, hold us, lead us, fill and fulfil us, always, ever. My God my Glory, Eric Milner-White: SPCK, London, 1967

Entrance Rite PRELUDE

At the entrance of the servers and clergy all stand. HYMN 205 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — The Day of Resurrection The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad, the passover of gladness, the passover of God! From death to life eternal, from earth unto the sky, our Christ hath brought us over, with hymns of victory. Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection light, and, listening to his accents, may hear so calm and plain his own "All hail!" and, hearing, may raise the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful; let earth her song begin; the round world keep high triumph, and all that is therein. Let all things seen and unseen their notes in gladness blend, for Christ the Lord is risen, our joy that hath no end. 6 | HIGH MASS

COLLECT OF THE DAY

All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

All

Let us pray. Almighty God, thy Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Give us grace to love one another and walk in the way of his commandments, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he died. Acts 7:55-60

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stronghold; for the sake of your name, lead me and guide me. Antiphon Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, for you are my tower of strength. Into your hands I commend my spirit, for you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth. Antiphon "My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. Make your face to shine upon your servant, and in your loving kindness save me." Antiphon Psalm 31:1, 3-5, 15-16

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Peter.

Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: "See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame." To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner," and "A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:2-10 10 | HIGH MASS

HOLY GOSPEL

Deacon All Deacon All

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it." John 14:1-14 HIGH MASS | 11

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. But chiefly we are bound to praise thee for the glorious resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us, and hath taken away the sin of the world; who by death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again hath restored us to everlasting life. PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

Allll

Allll

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Congratulations and the assurance of our prayers go to the seven members of St. James’ who were confirmed, and to the one member who was received into the Anglican Communion, at the uplifting service in Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday. This is cause for rejoicing and celebration, and an encouragement to us all, as we see members renewing their commitment and being ready to make a public affirmation of their living faith in Christ. Following on from our Lenten engagement with the Anglican Five Marks of Mission, or Five Marks of Love as were encouraged to see them, the confirmation is a reminder to us all to examine and renew our commitment to live out our faith in worship, in loving service, and, as Deacon Lucy challenged us so clearly last week, in sharing our faith with those around us. If we do not let us others know what God’s love means to us, and how it gives meaning to our lives, how will they discover?

In confirmation the seed of the Holy Spirit, given in baptism, is renewed, revitalized within us. Paul writes to Timothy, “Stir up the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands.” While Paul here may have been reminding Timothy of the gift of the Spirit in ordination, this encourages all of us to reflect on how we are bearing the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, and our life as a church: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Are we allowing the Spirit into our lives, to mould us into the people, the church, God longs us to be? Let us give thanks for Robert, Wesley, Christopher, Barbara, Hannah, Jordan, Lorraine and Matena, in the new commitment they have made, and let us pray for one another, for the renewing of the Holy Spirit in our common life together.

KID’S CORNER This is the Fifth Sunday of Easter. In the Gospel Jesus is talking to the disciples. He can see that they are worried that he is going to leave them. He tells them to feel happy instead as he is returning home to his Father in heaven. They ask him to just show them his Father and they will feel better. Jesus cannot believe they would ask that! He was surprised that they did not understand that God was within him and he was within God because he felt he had shown them the power of God through the things he did. Jesus reminds them that he is the way, the truth and the life. That was his way of reminding his friends to keep following him, that they were protected and loved, and that they would meet him again.

Prayer Heavenly Father, please help us to follow Jesus every day in everything we do. Lead us to help others and to show Jesus' example to all the people we meet by the kindness and caring of our actions. Amen.

Since the Literacy and Financial Education program (LFEP), funded by Comic Relief, was started three years ago it has helped 14,178 men and women to receive accreditation for literacy and numeracy skills, enabling them to set up their own businesses and take on leadership roles in the community, as well as to advocate on issues such as Gender Based Violence and access to education for women and young girls.

Nicola Lawrence, Head of Programs at Mothers’ Union said: “Since the LFEP began three years ago it has exceeded its original target by over 30%, meaning more lives have been changed and families transformed than we thought possible. Traditionally, women in Burundi have been marginalized and undervalued. The inclusive approach we have taken has enabled many, including widows and the disabled, who have been excluded from community based programs in the past, to take part and even hold leadership positions within the program and wider community.”
