A Reflection Here's the third dimension of Good News. In the sort of perspective we've been outlining, death is real and yet conquerable. You don't have to deny the reality of death, in fact there couldn't be anything worse than denying the reality of death, because that is encouraging people to live out a lie. What you can say is that God is never at the end of his resources when we are at the end of ours. When we face death, God says 'I'm on the far side of it', and a relationship with God is therefore not exhausted by the set of horizons we're use to here and now. Eternal life, not just life after death and not just some sort of survival of death. (Christians really ought to be much more unpleasantly critical than they often are of the idea that we survive death. We don't.) We die, and God brings us to life. That, I believe, is the biblical proclamation; it's not that some little bit of it somehow hangs on rather half-heartedly for some indefinite period, but that God re-makes us. And that of course, is ones of the things that enables us to face, honestly, our fear of death and annihilation. I've sometimes said our belief in eternal life and resurrection life with God in heaven doesn't depend so much on what we believe about our humanity, as if there were a little immortal bit of it that hung on, it depends on what we believe about God: that God is the God who raised Jesus from the dead, the God who raises the dead, the God who brings what is from what is not, who brings life out of death. So, that's the third aspect: not a bland proclamation that we can hope for immortality in the general sense of surviving things, but the ability to confront death and the utter reality of the loss and the tragedy involved, knowing that God is greater, and that our horizons, bounded by death, are not God's horizons. And when we've learned to look death in the face, then all kind of other fears and anxieties perhaps fall into perspective. I think that's quite an important aspect of preaching the resurrection. COLLECT OF THE DAY

All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

All

Let us pray. Almighty God, thy Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Give us grace to love one another and walk in the way of his commandments, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?" Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, "I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.' But I replied, 'By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' But a second time the voice answered from heaven, 'What God has made clean, you must not call profane.' This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house. He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, 'Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.' HIGH MASS | 9

And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?" When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, "Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life." Acts 11:1-18

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights. Praise him, all you angels of his; praise him, all his host. Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars. Antiphon Praise him, heaven of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the Name of the Lord; for he commanded, and they were created. He made them stand fast for ever and ever; he gave them a law which shall not pass away. Antiphon Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea-monsters and all deeps; fire and hail, snow and fog, tempestuous wind, doing his will; mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars; Wild beasts and all cattle, creeping things and winged birds; Antiphon Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the world; young men and maidens, old and young together. Let them praise the Name of the Lord, for his Name only is exalted, his splendour is over earth and heaven. He has raised up strength for his people and praise for all his loyal servants, the children of Israel, a people who are near him. Antiphon Psalm 148 10 | HIGH MASS

SECOND READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Revelation to John. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life." Revelation 21:1-6

When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:31-35

Stripped of the grave-clothes, the body now glorious rises immortal, forever victorious; comes to fulfill all the prophets have spoken; promise of life that will never be broken. Weeping is over, and death is defeated; life is recovered and joy is completed. Guards, at the sepulcher, scatter before him; Jesus is risen, and angels adore him. Highest, most holy, once lost and forsaken: now, from the sleep of the dead you awaken; angels appear at the tomb with the story: "He is not here, but is risen in glory." Give God the glory and glad adoration, from whom and through whom and in whom, creation looks for the joy which, in Christ, we inherit: praising the Father, the Son, and the Spirit!

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

Allll

Allll

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. ABOUT TODAY’S MUSIC Marcel Duruflé (1902 - 1986) was born in a small town in Normandy, France, and became a chorister at Rouen Cathedral at the early age 10. During these formative years, he was immersed in Gregorian chant, which became a strong and enduring influence in his life and music. At age 20, Duruflé graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris with first prizes in organ, piano, and composition. His musical style is rooted in the French impressionism of Debussy and Ravel, capturing some of the new harmonies of Olivier Messiaen, yet always anchored in the Gregorian chant of the Catholic Church. Duruflé was an active performing musician but not a prodigious composer, publishing only a handful of works. Of his two Masses works, the Requiem (1947) was heard at St James last year, on November 11, 2018. To-day’s Messe Cum Jubilo (1966) is Duruflé’s other Mass, which he wrote when he was sixty-four years old. It is based on a Gregorian chant commonly known as Cum Jubilo (also known as the Missa Marialis), and therefore appropriate on feast days for the Blessed Virgin Mary. (In Catholic tradition, the month of May is filled with special devotions to the BVM.) The Messe Cum Jubilo is unique not only in Duruflé’s œuvre, but in all twentieth-century choral works in that the mass setting uses unison men’s voices throughout. The high range for the voices, suggests that the composer was striving for a sound similar to that of the monastic choir of Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Solesmes. The use of Gregorian chant is immediately apparent in the Kyrie, in which the men sing the plainchant supported by the rich harmonies on the organ. The Kyrie structured is in tripartite form (Kyrie, Christe, Kyrie eleison), each of which are closely based on the melodic material of the original Cum Jubilo plainchant.

The Sanctus commences with an ostinato in the pedal line of the organ, which together with transcendent harmonies creates a sense of mystery. It has a dynamic arch that starts softly, reaching its apotheosis in the Hosanna, and concluding softly and serenely. The Sanctus is followed immediately by The Benedictus, sung by solo baritone, with celestial harmonies that are reminiscent of Olivier Messiaen. The Agnus Dei is structured in three parts : the first part has somewhat of an anxious mood, effectively serving as an ancilla to the text ‘Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the world.’ Part two is similar but more agitated, giving greater intensity to the sense anxiety. This is contrasted with luminous harmonies in part three of the Agnus Dei (Donna nobis pacem), where the Gregorian chant is heard initially on the organ, and then repeated by the men. Like a diamond that is laid out on black velvet, the contrast of the initial anxiety with the tranquility of the final part of the Agnus Dei is both beautiful and captivating, giving a feeling of profound peace.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY It was a privilege and a joy on Thursday evening to attend the consecration of Lynne McNaughton, a priest of our diocese, as Bishop of Kootenay. The service took place in a large Roman Catholic Church, as the Anglican Cathedral in Kelowna was too small. Archbishop Melissa presided and the Primate, Archbishop Fred Hiltz, preached; the Bishops of our Ecclesiastical Province, along with several other Bishops from across the country, took part in the laying on of hands. Bishop Lynne was well supported by family and friends, a good representation from our Diocese of New Westminster, and of course the people of her new diocese. It was a vibrant and joyful celebration of Christian worship, life and ministry.

Today’s Collect points us again to Jesus as “the Way, the Truth and the Life,” encouraging us “to love one another and walk in the way of his commandments.” One of the gifts the Church has to offer our increasingly individualistic and self-centred society is this sense of mutual dependence, of learning to live and love together, as we seek to walk as companions (those who share bread together) in the way of self-giving love which is Jesus Christ. May God bless Bishop Lynne and her diocese of Kootenay in their new ministry together, and may God bless us here at St James’ as we continue as disciples in the Way.
