Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The reign of life has begun, the tyranny of death is ended. A new birth has taken place, a new life has come, a new order of existence has appeared, our very nature has been transformed! This birth is not brought about by human generation, by the will of man, or by the desire of the flesh, but by God. If you wonder how, I will explain in clear language. Faith is the womb that conceives this new life, baptism the rebirth by which it is brought forth into the light of day. The Church is its nurse; her teachings are its milk, the bread from heaven is its food. It is brought to maturity by the practice of virtue; it is wedded to wisdom; it gives birth to hope. Its home is the kingdom; its rich inheritance the joys of paradise; its end, not death, but the blessed and everlasting life prepared for those who are worthy. ‘This is the day that the Lord has made’ - a day very different from those made when the world was first created and which are measured by the passage of time. This is the beginning of a new creation. On this day, as the prophet says, God makes a new heaven and a new earth. What is this new heaven? you may ask. It is the firmament of our faith in Christ. What is the new earth? A good heart, a heart like the earth, which drinks up the rain that falls on it and yields a rich harvest. In this new creation, purity of life is the sun, the virtues are the stars, transparent goodness is the air, and ‘the depths of the riches of wisdom and knowledge’, the sea. Sound doctrine, the divine teachings are the grass and plants that feed God’s flock, the people whom he shepherds, the keeping of the commandments is the fruit borne by the trees. COLLECT OF THE DAY

All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

All

Let us pray. Merciful God, thou hast prepared for those who love thee riches beyond imagination. Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. A certain woman named Lydia, a worshipper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home." And she prevailed upon us. Acts 16:9-15 HIGH MASS | 9

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

May God be merciful to us and bless us, show us the light of his countenance and come to us. Let your ways be known upon earth, your saving health among all nations. Antiphon Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide all the nations upon earth. May God give us his blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him. Antiphon Psalm 67:1-2, 4, 7

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Revelation to John. And in the spirit, an angel carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day - and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the honour of the nations. But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practises abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his

Jesus answered, "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, 'I am going away, and I am coming to you.' THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

Alll 18 | HIGH MASS

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God.

Alll

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Formation on Sundays THE CHRISTIAN IMAGINATION: THE LIFE OF CHRIST IN POETRY

As we all know, the gospels relate the history and facts of our Salvation by God through the Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection of our Lord. All four versions of Jesus’s life come down to us as prose narratives, and it is through that medium that we learn His “good news.” Throughout the centuries, writers have employed other kinds of language and literary form as they contemplate the meaning of Christ’s teaching and Sacrifice. Poetry, in particular, may provide a different access to spiritual truth, one that seems intuitive and emotional rather than rational. As a literary and linguistic form, poetry offers an alternative language through which we can experience and reflect on God’s message. Over the next five Sundays of Eastertide, we will read and discuss modern and contemporary poems as we construct an imaginative and impressionistic Salvation narrative. Through selected poetry, our series of church and guest speakers will explore the Annunciation of Christ, His ministry, the Passion of our Lord, the Resurrection, Christ’s Ascension into Heaven, and Pentecost. Please come. Learn about poets perhaps unfamiliar to you and enrich your experience of Easter this spring.

May 5: The Ascension and Pentecost Leader: Paul Stanwood On May 19, we will celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, which, in the Church, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. The account of Pentecost is found in Acts 2:1-21. In Christian faith, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity. What are the roots of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit: in scripture, in tradition, and in reason or experience? How does the Holy Spirit relate to the other persons of the Trinity, the Father and the Son? What is the work of the Holy Spirit in us? May 12: The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit Leader: Mother Jessica Schaap Read all the talks about salvation from the last Formation series on the website under “Christian Education - Educational Resources.” Formation is on Sundays in the Bishops’ Room at 9:30am.

St. James’ News & Announcements PLEASE HELP. RECTOR’S SABBATICAL REVIEW

ROSARY DEVOTIONS TO OUR LADY IN MAY:

WITH ST. JAMES’ CHURCH, 2013

GLORIOUS MYSTERIES

Dear Friends, At Parish Council (April 20) I shared a plan for a ‘sabbatical review’ with the Parish. Hard copies are now available in the Narthex and upon request (electronic format is available too) from the Parish Office. I would really welcome your participation at this early stage and in the coming months as the conversation unfolds. Please complete and return the feedback response form (green) to the Parish Office by Sunday, May 19th. Your support is much appreciated. Yours in Christ, Fr. Mark STUDY LEAVE FOR FR. MARK I will be on Study Leave April 29 - May 18. This time will be spent preparing for the Rector's sabbatical review with St. James' Church, 2013. During this period I will be in Vancouver and working on the Sundays, however I will be free of my usual weekday responsibilities. I am thankful to the Wardens and my colleagues for their support. I would welcome your prayers at this time. With appreciation, Fr. Mark.

Traditionally the month of May is dedicated to Our Lady. This year we will be honouring the Motherhood of Our Lady, with Rosary devotions each Sunday in May, at 9.45am in the Lady Chapel. All are welcome and encouraged to participate in this time-honoured, traditional devotion to Our Lady.

PWRDF UPDATE Christ Church Cathedral has undertaken an initiative entitled '50 Days 500 Nets' for the 50 days of Easter in which the goal is to raise funds for the purchase of 500 mosquito nets to combat the spread of malaria in the African countries of Burundi, Tanzania, and Mozambique. This is part of a foreign aid project entitled 'Spreads the Nets' the cathedral undertook in support of new programming that PWRDF (The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund) is doing in these countries in conjunction with a CIDA 32 | HIGH MASS

(Canadian International Development Agency) grant it received for combating HIV/AIDS and preventive health care initiatives during the period 2012-2016. Malaria is one of the biggest health challenges and killers in Africa especially of children and those with immune systems damaged by HIV/AIDS. Working with local partners PWRDF is looking to provide 60,000 treated mosquito nets along with the community health education needed to make their use as effective as possible. With matching CIDA funding of 3:1 a gift of $10 buys one mosquito net and all the necessary support services (costing about $38 all told). These nets are simple to use and can make the difference between life and death. St. James’ and other parishes in the diocese can support the cathedral and PWRDF in this economical and effective life supporting program. Donations in excess of $10 are eligible for a tax receipt. For more information and if you would like to support the cathedral and PWRDF with this program please see/contact Peter Goodwin, PWRDF parish liaison. You may reach Peter at 604929-6143 or by email at goodmac22@gmail.com. Many thanks, Peter Goodwin, PWRDF parish liaison
