As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection And then, fifth, our worship too is about God coming to be in our midst, but God also coming to deal with the wholeness of who we are. I spoke of the resurrection of the body and its meaning being at least in part, that all that we are is of interest to God. And so to proclaim the resurrection is to say 'God's purpose is the transfiguration, not the cancellation of history in the material world'. God does not want to rub out what's there so that he can do something better, God is interested in all that we have become as historical and material beings, and that's what he will raise up. Which of course, gives a very serious and very profound theological valuation not just to our bodily and material selves, but to the material world in which we live. Belief in the resurrection has something very significantly to do with how we look at our environment. And I would say with great seriousness that part of the Good News that Christians have to utter and express in a world very anxious about that material environment, is that the matter of this world is God's before it is ours: that it requires our respect because God sees it and thinks it good. And that the affirmation of Jesus' resurrection, the great decisive change in the middle of material history, bears on how we see the material world as a whole. It touches our thoughts about the environment: it bears on climate change and energy usage and carbon footprints and all the rest, which may seem a very long way from Acts 2, and yet is not so far when you think it through. It grounds also the understanding of the Church's worship as sacramental, sacramental life which is not just a sort of magical attitude to things, but the belief that the material things of this world— water and bread and wine—can become precious carriers of the purpose and work of God, when they're brought into relation with the risen Jesus. The importance, in our Eucharistic liturgy, of calling the Holy Spirit down upon ourselves and upon these material things is that we are actually asking in our eucharistic prayer for God to do something resurrection-shaped in the middle of our worship, for him to bring himself to life, as the bread is broken and the wine is shared and as we stretch out our hands and open our mouths. Without going into the immensely complicated details of the history of controversies over the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, I would want to say there are two absolutely basic things about Christ's presence in Holy Communion that we need to hold fast to. One is that it is the action of God; the second is that God shows what he means in the things of this world. And in all that there is a resurrection-shaped event going on in Holy Communion. So the resurrection tells us something about how God sees history and matter, the stuff of our ordinary experience; how God is free to transfigure it in relation to Jesus; and how that transfigures our own understanding of our bodies and the environment in which we live, giving us very good reasons for being very suspicious of any Christianity that ignores the value of the body and that ignores the value of the environment – and yet looking not just for affirmation but also for transformation. The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts. During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. A certain woman named Lydia, a worshipper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. HIGH MASS | 9
When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home." And she prevailed upon us. Acts 16:9-15

May God be merciful to us and bless us, show us the light of his countenance and come to us. Let your ways be known upon earth, your saving health among all nations. Antiphon Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. The earth has brought forth her increase; may God, our own God, give us his blessing. May God give us his blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him. Antiphon Psalm 67

SECOND READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Revelation to John. And in the spirit, an angel carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day - and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the honour of the nations. But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practises abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus answered, "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, 'I am going away, and I am coming to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe." Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 412 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — O God, Beyond All Face and Form O God, beyond all face and form, you willed it that creation’s night should blaze, and chaos still its storm, and birth a universal light. All things below, all things above are formed of your eternal love. The glory of the galaxies, the beauty of a baby’s hand, the thundering of the restless seas, the glory of the forest’s stand— all things below, all things above are formed of your eternal love. You gave our race both form and name, and love for us was your intent; then to a woman’s womb love came, and on a cross was wholly spent. All things below, all things above are formed of this incarnate love. Of this great love all loves are born, of self, of neighbour, and of earth. By love shall night be turned to morn, and death shall never conquer birth. All things below, all things above are formed of God’s eternal love.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY This Sunday, the Sixth of Eastertide, was in earlier times commonly called Rogation (Asking) Sunday. Along with the three days following, it was a time of special prayer for God’s blessing on the land, and, as the seeds were sown, for a good harvest. A tradition developed too of “beating the bounds,” walking around the parish boundaries as the prayers were offered. Prayer and action for good stewardship of the land, of the creation, is part of our baptismal covenant, especially needed in this time of climate change. The Salal+Cedar ministry of our diocese is a prompt and challenge to us in this regard. There is a motion before Synod this weekend urging parishes to attend to their response to this issue. How are we at St. James’ being careful stewards?
stretching to Clark in the east, Terminal to the south and towards Cambie to the west. Our attention is so often drawn, understandably, to the particular challenges of the Downtown Eastside around the church building that we lose sight of our care for the wider neighbourhood. Rogationtide reminds us of our wider responsibility, and makes me wonder again how might we raise our profile in Strathcona, for example. In these coming days then, let us give thanks for the beauty and wonder of the creation, praying for a more careful stewardship of this precious gift. Let us pray too for all who live and work in our wider parish, and for grace to recognise and to reflect the light and love of Christ amongst us all.
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
