A Reflection A PILGRIM PRAYER TO ST JAMES St James, Apostle, chosen among the first, you were the first to drink the cup of the master and you are the great protector of pilgrims; make us strong in faith and happy in hope on our pilgrim journey following the path of Christian life, and sustain us so that we may finally reach the glory of God the Father. Amen. PILGRIM BEATITUDES 1. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if you find that the Camino opens your eyes to the unseen. 2. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if what concerns you most is not arriving, but arriving with the others. 3. Blessed are you, pilgrim, when you contemplate the sights of the Camino and find them full of names and of new dawns. 4. Blessed are you, pilgrim, because you have discovered that the true Camino begins at its end. 5. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if your backpack empties of things as your heart doesn’t know where to fit so many emotions. 6. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if you discover that a step backwards to help another is more valuable than one hundred forward without awareness of those at your sides. 7. Blessed are you, pilgrim, when you have no words to give thanks for all the wonders in every nook of the Camino. 8. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if you search the truth and make of your Camino a life and of your life a Camino, after Him who is the Way, the Life, and the Truth. 9. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if in the Camino you meet yourself and make yourself a gift of time without hurry so that you may not neglect the image of your heart. 10. Blessed are you, pilgrim, if you find that the Camino is rich with silence, and the silence is rich with prayers, and the prayers are encounters with the Father that awaits you.

Entrance Rite PRELUDE Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele (BWV 654) — J. S. Bach HYMN 491 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — The Head That Once Was Crowned The head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now; a royal diadem adorns the mighty Victor’s brow. The highest place that heaven affords is his, is his by right, the King of kings and Lord of lords, and heaven’s eternal light, the joy of all who dwell above, the joy of all below, to whom he manifests his love and grants his name to know. To them the cross, with all its shame, with all its grace, is given, their name an everlasting name, their joy the joy of heaven. They suffer with their Lord below, they reign with him above, their profit and their joy to know the mystery of his love. The cross he bore is life and health, though shame and death to him, his people’s hope, his people’s wealth, their everlasting theme. 6 | HIGH MASS

COLLECT OF THE DAY
All
The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.
All
Let us pray. Almighty God, thou hast exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to thy kingdom in heaven. Mercifully give us faith to know that, as he promised, he abides with us on earth to the end of time; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Acts.
In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, "Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus - for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us - one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection." So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place." And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. Acts 1:15-17, 21-26

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of the scornful! Their delight is in the law of the Lord, and they meditate on his law day and night. Antiphon They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; everything they do shall prosper. It is not so with the wicked; they are like chaff which the wind blows away. Antiphon Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, nor the sinner in the council of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is doomed. Antiphon Psalm 1

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of John . If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:9-13

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon All Deacon All
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "Father, I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth." John 17:6-19

At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, all the heavenly orders, in their great array. Humbled for a season, to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious when from death he passed: Bore it up triumphant with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father’s breast; filled it with the glory of that perfect rest. In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true: he is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. Brothers, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with the Father’s glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now.

SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: Through your dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ our Lord. After his glorious resurrection he openly appeared to his disciples, and in their sight ascended into heaven, to prepare a place for us; that where he is, there we might also be, and reign with him in glory. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:
SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. + Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.
Allll
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;

About Today’s Music Marcel Duruflé (1902 - 1986) was born in a small town in Normandy, France, and became a chorister at Rouen Cathedral at the early age 10. During these formative years, he was immersed in Gregorian chant, which became a strong and enduring influence in his life and music. At age 20, Duruflé graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris with first prizes in organ, piano, and composition. His musical style is rooted in the French impressionism of Debussy and Ravel, capturing some of the new harmonies of Olivier Messiaen, yet always anchored in the Gregorian chant of the Catholic Church. Duruflé was an active performing musician but not a prodigious composer, publishing only a handful of works. Of his two choral works, the Requiem (1947) was heard at St. James’ on November 3, 2014. Today’s Messe Cum Jubilo (1966) is Duruflé’s other choral work, which he wrote when he was sixty-four years old. It is based on a Gregorian chant commonly known as Cum Jubilo (also known as the Missa Marialis), and therefore appropriate on feast days for the Blessed Virgin Mary. (In Catholic tradition, the month of May is filled with special devotions to the BVM.) The Messe Cum Jubilo is unique not only in Duruflé’s œuvre, but in all twentiethcentury choral works in that the mass setting uses unison men’s voices throughout. The high range for the voices, suggests that the composer was striving for a sound similar to that of the monastic choir of Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Solesmes. The use of Gregorian chant is immediately apparent in the Kyrie, in which the men sing the plainchant melody, closely based on the melodic material of the original Cum Jubilo, supported by rich harmonies on the organ. The Sanctus commences with an ostinato in the pedal line of the organ, which together with transcendent harmonies creates a sense of mystery. It has a dynamic arch that starts softly, reaching its apotheosis in the Hosanna, and concluding softly and serenely. The Sanctus is followed immediately by The Benedictus, sung by solo baritone, with celestial harmonies that are reminiscent of Olivier Messiaen. The Agnus Dei is structured in three parts : the first part has somewhat of an anxious mood, effectively serving as an ancilla to the text ‘Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the world.’ Part two is similar but more agitated, giving greater intensity to the sense anxiety. This is contrasted with luminous harmonies in part three of the Agnus Dei (Donna nobis pacem), where the Gregorian chant is heard initially on the organ, and then repeated by the men. Like a diamond that is laid out on black velvet, the contrast of the initial anxiety with the tranquility of the final part of the Agnus Dei is both beautiful and captivating, giving a feeling of profound peace. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia.”
the Church, and each of us, to serve God and neighbour, to be living signs of God’s love.
In these ten days between Ascension and Pentecost the whole Church waits, as did the Apostles with Mary the Mother of Jesus and the other women in the Upper Room, for a fresh outpouring of Holy Spirit: upon the Church, in our life together and in our individual lives, and indeed upon the whole of creation. We pray that we may experience anew the gifts and fruit of Holy Spirit. The sevenfold gifts, drawn from Isaiah 11.1-2, are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and the Fear of the Lord. The ninefold fruit are to be found in Galatians 5.22-23: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control.
O King enthroned on high, Comforter and Spirit of truth, you that are in all places and fill all things, the treasury of blessings and the giver of life, come and dwell with us, cleanse us from every stain and save our souls, O gracious one. Amen. (an Orthodox prayer)
The Archbishop of Canterbury is again calling upon the churches of the Anglican Communion to pray together in these days “Thy kingdom come”, for a fresh openness to discern where God is present and active in God’s world, and where and how God is calling

CORPUS CHRISTI High Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi Thurs, May 31 at 6:30 High Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi with outdoor Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, will be celebrated at St James'. Bishop Skelton will be the preacher. Since the mid-thirteenth century the Thursday after Trinity Sunday has been observed in the West as a day of thanksgiving for the gift of the Blessed Sacrament in the life of the church. This observance has been restored to the Calendar of many Churches of the Anglican Communion, including our own, in the liturgical renewal of the last century. Known often by its shortened Latin name, Corpus Christi, it is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Of course we give thanks for the Institution of Holy Communion in Holy Week, on Maundy Thursday. Then, though, we are caught up in the solemn events of the Lord’s Passion, with the washing of the feet, the watch in the garden, and the betrayal of Jesus set before us in the context of the Last Supper. Corpus Christi gives us the opportunity to focus our thanksgiving on the sacramental presence of Christ in the life of the church, how we are joined together as the Body of Christ by our feeding on the Bread of Life and drinking from Christ the Vine, how we draw our life and strength from him, how we receive here the pledge and foretaste of the banquet of heaven.
Remember Jesus’ words: “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the day; for my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” [John 6.53-58, NRSV]
RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS SYRIAN REFUGEES UPDATE The good people at St. Helen’s Anglican Church Syrian Refugee Committee have sent an update and a few photos of the Syrian folks sponsored in part by St. James’. Have a look at the display in the Narthex.
A traditional part of the celebration has been a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, clergy and people together taking the consecrated host (in what is called a Monstrance, from the Latin “to show”: see photograph) with them into the neighbourhood. This witnesses to the presence of Christ in the sacrament, of course, but its intent is more than that: it is a procession of witness to Christ present in the midst of God’s people, to Christ present in God’s creation, and to Christ’s love for all. This year St James’, together with the DofNW Chapter of the Society of Catholic Priests, extends a warm invitation to people from across the diocese to join with our Bishop in this celebration and act of witness. FRIDAY PRAYERS Fridays 10 am - 11 am Meditation, with reflection from John Main, OSB, and Silent Prayer in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Please see Anne Kennedy for more information.
