A Reflection GOD. God. Not like anything or anyone else in the universe. Just God And the abyss of nonbeing. And across the face of nonbeing ~ just God. God, say some, cannot cease to exist. But that is to impose upon God an unnecessary constraint – mandatory existence. Is it not more fitting that God is, in spite of the real possibility of ceasing to exist? If existence is not a mandatory condition for God, then God is the continuous overcoming of nonbeing. God is fundamental being. But would not be alone. Whatever alone is for one who is simply being. But that must remain one of the many things we will never know about the great reality of which we occupy only a tiny, insignificant corner. Alone. But the overcoming of non-being is a fullness uncontainable in itself. It overflows. To where? Or what? The overcoming of non-being is by the power of being and is therefore a gift to itself. Having received such a gift the impulse to give is almost inescapable. Almost? To give burns in the heart of being. Douglas Williams, November 2017

HYMN 5 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Christ Whose Glory Fills the Skies Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true, the only light, Sun of Righteousness, arise! Triumph o'er the shades of night: Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee; joyless is the day’s return till thy mercy’s beams I see, till they inward light impart, glad my eyes and warm my heart. Visit then this soul of mine, pierce the gloom of sin and grief; fill me, Radiancy divine, scatter all my unbelief; more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the First Book of Samuel. Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, "Samuel! Samuel!" and he said, "Here I am!" and ran to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call; lie down again." So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, "Samuel!" Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again." Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and if he calls

you, you shall say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening." 1 Samuel 3:1-10

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting-places and are acquainted with all my ways. Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, but you, O Lord, know it altogether. Antiphon You press upon me behind and before and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain to it. Antiphon For you yourself created my inmost parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I will thank you because I am marvellously made; your works are wonderful, and I know it well. Antiphon My body was not hidden from you, while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. Antiphon How deep I find your thoughts, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. Antiphon Psalm 139:1-5, 12-17

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are beneficial. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food," and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, "The two shall be one flesh." But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, "Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!" Nathanael asked him, "Where did you get to know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you." Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." John 1:43-51

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. 18 | THE LITURGY

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Canon Douglas Williams, a faithful priest who in retirement ministered regularly at St James’ for many years, for the last time preaching on 19 March last year, and celebrating Mass the following day, died the week before Christmas. His funeral takes place at Christ Church Cathedral this weekend. Fr Douglas had a great love for St James’ and its tradition: his service at the altar and his thoughtful preaching have been much appreciated here. Quiet and reserved, with learning and wisdom of great breadth and depth, always keen to discover new things, he had a gift for wideranging conversation. I know that I am not alone in having enjoyed his company and learned much from him. Here is an extract from his Funeral and Related Considerations (written in 1998), which I find insightful, and which I hope may offer helpful food for thought:

In the end, there is nothing but the love of God. But forgiveness does not mean that we can avoid seeing and coming to terms with what we have done. This is the insight behind the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. [And might he have later added “in Canada”?] There need not always be punishment (and, with God, I suspect, there is never punishment), but there must always be admission and recognition of what has been done, for good and for ill.

“I have never lived in fear of a vengeful God. I know that I am held firmly by the infinitely loving God. I do not believe that we face a “great courtroom in the sky” beyond death. But I do believe in the Last Judgment.

In the resurrection, all wounds are healed, as were the wounds in the hands of the risen Christ. But many of the healed wounds that we shall see in the resurrection will be those we have inflicted on others. The glory of the

The symbol of the Last Judgment points to the opening of our eyes to the fullness of what we have done and what we have become. Otherwise, death (and resurrection) allows us –, as my son Zephyr once put it – simply to continue the process of denial which so much of our life has always been.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

resurrection will move us on, so that our wounds shall be healed, together with the wounds which we have inflicted on others; but not before we have seen, clearly and completely, both the good and the ill that we have done. Surely, in this sense, there is a Last Judgment. And surely we need the prayers of the Church to support us in that Judgment.”

So with this confidence let us surround Fr Douglas, Helen and all the family, with our prayers, that he may rest in peace and rise in glory. Fr Kevin

ST. JAMES’ CONCERT SERIES Sun. Feb. 18 at 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Ticket cost and other info: https://sjmsvanviols.eventbrite.ca St. James’ Anglican Church is pleased to present Alio Modo featuring Vancouver Viols. Vancouver Viols is a consortium of musicians in and around Vancouver who are dedicated to exploring music for viola da gamba: a Renaissance instrument with a rich, clear, and expressive sound. While the viol originated hundreds of years ago, it remains part of a vibrant living tradition of professional & amateur players, composers, and enthusiasts. In this distinctive programme, five local musicians come together to explore the full potential of the instrument - from the rich relentlessness of J.S. Bach’s “Passacaglia in C minor” and the playfulness of Christopher Tye’s “In Nomine: Crye,” in which the instruments imitate the shouts of a street vendor, to the sheer joy of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s “Agnus Dei,” heard here in a new arrangement by local organist David Poon. One possible translation of “alio modo” is “in another style.” The music presented in this concert casts a broad net, but the fundamental effect is sonorous, moving, and timeless.
