Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity gives Christians an annual opportunity to continue their quest for the unity they already share in Christ. It is also a time to gather in praise of the Triune God and to deepen the understanding of the ecumenical movement. By joining in this annual celebration Christians raise their voices, hands and hearts to God seeking the fulfillment of the prayer of Jesus, the Son of God, “that they all may be one.” The Week of Prayer also invites those who participate to use it as an opportunity to examine the effectiveness of the ecumenical movement in seeking to end the divisions among Christians. From the smallest to the largest communities, from all cultures, races and language groups, from all the baptized to all those in ordained ministry, the Week of Prayer is also an opportunity to ask examine the level of support they have given to this important movement in the life of the Church. An accounting of each Christian’s discipleship and faithfulness to the proclamation of the Gospel—the good news of reconciliation—can be taken every year during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. http://www.geii.org/week_of_prayer_for_christian_unity/ preparation/observing_the_week_of_prayer.html This Friday, January 25, 2013, at 7 pm, join Father Mark at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church (near St. James’) in a special liturgy to mark the week of prayer for Christian unity. This service of celebration and prayer entitled – ‘What does God Require of Us?’ - is conducted in the tradition of India, from which this year’s theme comes. The full text of the service is available at www.geii.org under ‘Ecumenical Celebration of the Word of God’. We hope that our St. James’ parishioners will make a special effort to be part of this important evening. See page 21 for more information about this special mass on Friday.

The Liturgy of the Word THE OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:1-5

PSALM

All read the Psalm together. Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, and your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice like the great deep; you save both man and beast, O Lord. How priceless is your love, O God! your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings. They feast upon the abundance of your house; you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the well of life, and in your light we see light. Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, and your favour to those who are true of heart. Psalm 36:5-10

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Let Jesus be cursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

THE HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. John 2:1-11

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. +

Formation on Sundays CHRISTIAN ECUMENICISM During the third week of January, churches across the northern hemisphere observe an event called the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. “At least once a year,” as the World Council of Churches tells us, Hearts are touched, and people realize that their neighbours' ways are not so strange.” This January, in celebration of our commonality as Christians, we will explore ecumenicism. “Ecumenicism” is a word that means nothing less than the promotion or movement toward worldwide Christian unity or cooperation. After exploring the history of western ecumenical movements, we will learn about efforts made as particular Christian denominations reach out to others in loving dialogue:

January 20: The Ecumenical Life Leader: Fr. Mark Greenaway-Robbins

THE MYTH OF TODAY’S SECULAR WORLD-VIEW Many people assume that our world today is profoundly secular and that a secular world view is a necessary and logical result of modernity. Many of us accept the notion that an ideal moral and ethical political system can only operate in the absence of religious belief. In fact, however, religion has failed to disappear, and in the twenty-first century it thrives, diversifying and growing all over the world. In this series we confront the “myth” of the secular, shedding light upon the religious beliefs at the foundation of both our cultural epistemology and our social institutions. In the first part of this series we will play excerpts from a CBC radio broadcast entitled, “The Myth of the Secular” and discuss the contradictions behind the myth. We conclude with a look at the work of philosopher Charles Taylor (A Secular Age), who redefines secularization in light of its failure to uproot the religious and spiritual values of our age. SEEKING CONFIRMATION? REAFFIRMATION? RECEPTION? If you desire the sacrament of confirmation, you are invited to participate in a course of preparation beginning the first week of February. Confirmation is an expression of deepening and conscious commitment to the way of Christ. Reaffirmation is an opportunity to renew your baptismal vows and Reception is for members who were confirmed in other churches and who now desire to be received into the Anglican Communion. The sacrament is a means of grace and strength for living out the vows made at baptism. We hope this may be a rich time of learning, prayer, and relationship building. If you are interested in preparation, please contact in person or via email Fr. Mark, rector@stjames.bc.ca, or Mtr. Jessica, assistant@stjames.bc.ca. The celebration of confirmation/reaffirmation/ reception will take place on April 28 at Christ Church Cathedral. The Rev. Mtr. Jessica Schaap

If you would like to arrange to have your home blessed, please email Fr. Mark at rector@stjames.bc.ca or Mtr. Jessica at assistant@stjames.bc.ca. THE PASCHAL CANDLE Most of you are familiar with the Paschal Candle. It is the first flame lit from the new fire at the Easter Vigil, which represents the light of Christ rising to dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds. The candle is marked by special symbols: the cross; the Greek letters for alpha and omega reminding us that God is the beginning and the end; the current year, representing God present with us now; and five grains of incense representing the five wounds of Christ. The Paschal Candle is processed into the church at the Easter Vigil and remains in its holder near the altar throughout the Easter season, during which it is lit at all Masses held in the main sanctuary. The Paschal Candle is specially made and must be ordered in advance of Easter. It costs in the neighbourhood of $200. If you would like to support this meaningful tradition by making a donation toward the cost of the candle, please add the amount to your offering envelope, and on the outside of the HIGH MASS | 25

St. James’ News & Announcements text of the service is available at www.geii.org under ‘Ecumenical Celebration of the Word of God’. (this website is a ministry of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement) Your participation will be a very practical way of living out Christian ecumenicism, the theme of the current Sunday Formation sessions offered at St. James’. Father Mark will be preaching on that night, and we hope that our St. James’ parishioners will also make a special effort to be part of this important evening. CANADA’S TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION Please join us at St. James’ Anglican Church, 303 East Cordova after High Mass at noon, Sunday, January 20th in the Bishops’ Room for a bowl of soup and conversation about St. James’ commitment to undo racism in our churches and communities and support the September 17 to 22 TRC events in Vancouver. We will update you on these events and ask for your ideas on what we can be doing at St. James’ to decolonize ourselves. Archbishop Fred J. Hiltz of the Anglican Church of Canada, said on January 1, 2013, “Love and right relations, one with another -- that is the real work of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Rooted in the tradition of the prophets and the gospel of Jesus, the churches have something to say about reconciliation, the sincerity of apology and the patience to wait for acceptance. We look to a new day when racism is a thing of the past and when relations between the First Nations Peoples of this land and all others who call it home are marked by respect.”

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION UPDATE FROM DIOCESE Dear Friends, This is the first of a series of regular updates you will receive over the next few months as we mobilize our Diocese to participate in the September 2013 Truth and Reconciliation National Event here in Vancouver. These communications are being sent to the designated contact person in each deanery, with copies to all Regional Deans, Archdeacons, the Diocesan Archivist, Bishop Mark MacDonald, and the Anglican representatives on the BC Ecumenical Advocates for Healing and Reconciliation. Please share these communications as widely as possible. 1. TRC National Event, Vancouver. The dates for the TRC event proper are Sept. 18-21 (Wednesday-Saturday). In addition, the Indian Residential Schools Survivors' Society and Reconciliation Canada, in partnership with many other community groups including churches, are planning "book-end" events around the hearings. These are: the All Nations Canoe Gathering on Sept. 17; the event "A New Way Forward" at BC Place on the evening of Sept. 21; and a Walk for Reconciliation on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 22. Church participation is welcome, and indeed essential, at all three of these events as well as at the TRC hearings themselves. The TRC hearings will be held in the facilities of the PNE at Hastings Park, which is within the parish boundaries of St David of Wales. We are hoping that it will be possible to designate St David's as the "parish church" for the TRC event, and that the parish will be able to co-ordinate spiritual support, and, to a limited extent, logistical support for our Diocese's participation in the TRC hearings. There are a number of Idle No More events planned for the Metro Vancouver area this Friday; please attend an event in your community if you can, and encourage others to do so.

Please save your used postage stamps for a new ongoing fundraiser for our Street Outreach Initiative. We are collecting stamps of all ages from all countries. Please tell your friends so we can make this endeavour as successful as possible.

3. Resources Useful information and updates can be found on the website of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (www.trc.ca) and KAIROS Canada (www.kairoscanada.org).
