Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything He has given us — and He has given us everything. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from Him. Gratitude therefore takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awakening to new wonder and to praise of the goodness of God. For the grateful person knows that God is good, not by hearsay but by experience. And that is what makes all the difference. Thomas Merton, Thoughts in Solitude, p 33.

Entrance Rite PRELUDE How Brightly Shines the Morning Star — Dietrich Buxtehude At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 327 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Lo, God Is Here! Let Us Adore Lo, God is here! let us adore, and own how awesome is this place; let all within us feel God's power and bow before the hidden face. Redeeming Lord, your grace we prove, serve you with awe, with reverence love. Lo, God is here! Both day and night united choirs of angels sing; to God, enthroned above all height, heaven's host their noblest praises bring; disdain not, Lord, our meaner song, who praise you with a stammering tongue. Being of beings, may our praise your courts with grateful fragrance fill; still may we stand before your face, still hear and do your sovereign will; to you may all our thoughts arise, ceaseless, accepted sacrifice.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Jonah.

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, "Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you." So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, "Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. Jonah 3:1-5, 10

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

For God alone my soul in silence waits; truly, my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken. Antiphon In God is my safety and my honour; God is my strong rock and my refuge. Put your trust in him always, O people, pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge. Antiphon

Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath, even those of low estate cannot be trusted. On the scales they are lighter than a breath, all of them together. Antiphon Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride; though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it. Antiphon God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, that power belongs to God. Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, for you repay everyone according to his deeds. Antiphon Psalm 62:6-14

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news." As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea - for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. Mark 1:14-20

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Get your calendars out! Sat. Jan. 27, 10:00 am-2:00 pm is Parish Council and we’re going to be covering a lot of ground. We’ll gather for discussion and presentations, have lunch and celebrate Mass together. It’s important to get together and discuss where we’ve been this past year and where we are headed. So be there or be square! This past week, Fr. Kevin, Deacon Joyce, Fr. Matthew and I gathered together for a retreat on Mayne Island, where we spent time sharing in discussions about our life and ministry together here at St. James’. There were times of reflection and thanksgiving for events in the past year, buoyant discussions about future plans and prayers for guidance as to where we as a community may be being called. We are very blessed to be in team ministry which is seen less frequently in parishes than it once was. St. James’ certainly has a history of having multiple clergy on site, if we look back at the days when the clergy house was

occupied by several priests. We are now in a time when that space will be reformed for the needs of our parish and our ministry today and in the future.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

For myself, I have found that being part of a team ministry is a wonderful gift, in that we have ongoing support from each other, a sharing of gifts and resources, and in our particular case a good sense of humour, all of which carries us forward in our shared ministry here with you. Being on retreat together gave us time to share, rest, eat, laugh and re-energize. I am looking forward to sharing with you at Parish Council some of what our clergy team is working on and hoping for in our 2018 ministry as God’s people at St. James’. Let us forge ahead together, deepening our faith in the risen Lord and welcoming new comers into our community. We have a strong history and legacy to live up to and to carry forward. I’m excited. Are you? See you soon, Mother Lucy

JAMES’ CONCERT SERIES Sun. Feb. 18 at 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Ticket cost and other info: https://sjmsvanviols.eventbrite.ca St. James’ Anglican Church is pleased to present Alio Modo featuring Vancouver Viols. Vancouver Viols is a consortium of musicians in and around Vancouver who are dedicated to exploring music for viola da gamba: a Renaissance instrument with a rich, clear, and expressive sound. While the viol originated hundreds of years ago, it remains part of a vibrant living tradition of professional & amateur players, composers, and enthusiasts. In this distinctive programme, five local musicians come together to explore the full potential of the instrument - from the rich relentlessness of J.S. Bach’s “Passacaglia in C minor” and the playfulness of Christopher Tye’s “In Nomine: Crye,” in which the instruments imitate the shouts of a street vendor, to the sheer joy of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s “Agnus Dei,” heard here in a new arrangement by local organist David Poon. ANTI-RACISM TRAINING DAY Sat.
