Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Prologue to the Rule 1. Listen, child of God, to the guidance of your teacher. Attend to the message you hear and make sure that it pierces to your heart, so that you may accept with willing freedom, and fulfill by the way you live, the directions that come from your loving Father. It is not easy to accept and persevere in obedience, but it is the way to return to Christ, when you have strayed through laxity and carelessness of disobedience. My words are addressed to you especially, whoever you may be, whatever your circumstances, who turn from the pursuit of your own self will and ask to enlist under Christ, who is Lord of all, by following him through taking to yourself that strong and blessed armor of obedience which he made his own on coming into our world. 2. This, then, is the beginning of my advice: make prayer the first step in anything worthwhile that you attempt. Persevere and do not weaken in that prayer. Pray with confidence, because God, in his love and forgiveness, has counted us as his own sons and daughters. Surely we should not, by our evil acts, heartlessly reject that love. At every moment of our lives, as we use the good things he has given us, we can respond to his love only by seeking to obey his will for us. If we should refuse, what wonder to find ourselves disinherited! What wonder if he, confronted and repelled by the evil in us, should abandon us like malicious and rebellious subjects to the never ending pain of separation since we refused to follow him to glory. 3. However late, then, it may seem, let us rouse ourselves from lethargy. That is what scripture urges on us when it says: The time has come for us to rouse ourselves from sleep. 1 Let us open our eyes to the light that can change us into the likeness of God.2 Let our ears be alert to the stirring call of his voice crying to us every day: Today, if you should hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.3 And again: Let anyone with ears to hear listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.4 And this is what the Spirit says: Come my children, hear me, and I shall teach you the fear of the Lord.5 Run, while you have light of life, before the darkness of death overtakes you. 6 St. Benedict’s Rule, translation by Patrick Barry, OSB, HiddenSpring, c 2004 1. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

A reading from the Book of Jonah. The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, "Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you." So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, "Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news." As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea - for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. Mark 1:14-20

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Each student preaches at a church in the Lower Mainland on the same Sunday, and this week, our placement student from VST Lucy Price, will preach and be available after Low and High Mass on Sunday morning to answer any questions you may have about VST. Lucy will bring VST Program Brochures and Academic Prospectus's for anyone who is interested in taking a course or supporting VST. THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST (CANDLEMAS) The Feast of Candlemas will be celebrated this year on Sunday, February 1st. The transfer of the celebration from February 2nd to February 1st will enable the wider congregation to participate in this lovely liturgy. Celebrating the Feast a day early will also ease the strain on our clergy resources in this time of transition.

AN EPIPHANY BLESSING FOR OUR HOMES 20+G+M+B+15 This may be written on the lintel above the front door into your home. A piece of blessed chalk , available in the Narthex, from this Mass may be taken home with you for this purpose. Following the writing, this prayer is to be used: Let us pray. O Lord holy, Father Almighty, everlasting God, we beseech thee to hear us: and vouchsafe to send thy holy Angel from heaven, to guard and cherish, protect and visit, and evermore defend all that dwell in this house. I call upon thy Saints, Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, to protect my Family and my home from every harm and danger, and I place this mark over my door to remain as a constant reminder to us and all who enter here that my house is truly a house of the Lord. O God, make the door of my house the gateway to thine Eternal Kingdom. All this we ask through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Amen. KID’S CORNER VISION: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation.

DURING MASS: It is such a privilege and blessing to be able to worship alongside such a diverse group at St. James' and this especially includes worshipping with all the children. Whether children are in the back or sitting in the pews, we encourage parents to help children find creative ways to engage in what is happening in the service. IN THE BACK: There are activities, books, and quiet toys for younger children. Activities and colouring sheets will coincide with the lectionary and liturgical season. Older children are invited to participate in the activities and return to pews as parents see best. IN THE PEWS: There are pew packs with activities and colouring sheets that coincide with the lectionary and liturgical season. There are also children’s bibles for

THE THURIBLE | 25

school-age children available. Please return packs and bibles at the end of the service. THIS WEEK: Our Gospel reading this week is another account of Jesus calling individuals to follow him and be his disciples. We hear how Jesus calls out and invites four fishermen. These fishermen drop everything, leave their families and careers and join Jesus. Jesus doesn’t ask them just to follow, but he promises that he will have them fishing for people – sharing with others the love of God and inviting them to join the journey of following Jesus. For the first disciples, following Jesus meant leaving some things behind and taking on new responsibilities. PARENTS: Share with your child(ren) what have been some of the things you’ve had to leave behind when choosing to follow Jesus. Were they difficult or easy? What were the new responsibilities that you gained? In what ways have you been fishing for people? Ask your children if they too want to be followers of Jesus and what things they may be called to give up and what new responsibilities to take on. Please let Jenny know of your needs and wishes for faith education for your children so that you all may grow together in faith. Thank you so much! Jenny Scott, Youth Worker

COMMEMORATION St. Thomas Aquinas Priest and Friar, Teacher of the Faith, 1274 January 28 Thomas Aquinas was a thirteenth-century Dominican friar who spent most of his adult life teaching in universities. His powers of concentration were legendary. He once stood in front of three different scribes and dictated three separate works at the same time, without losing the train of his thought in any of them. Thomas was also a man of constant prayer: his students often found him kneeling beside his desk when he was working on a difficult theological question. He understood that he had his gifts to help the Church lay hold of “the truth as it is in Jesus.” Unlike many other theologians at that time, Thomas saw no contradiction between human reason and God’s revelation. He once said that God gives grace not to destroy creation but to make it perfect — to raise it above itself, so that the whole human being, through its reason, might actively share in God’s own life. This insight has been gladly confirmed by the Church — and particularly by our own Anglican tradition. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION Charles Stuart King of England, and Martyr, 1649 January 30 Today we remember Charles I, who became King of England and Scotland in 1625. A shy man with refined tastes and a mild stutter, he was in private life a devoted husband and a loving father. As Supreme Governor of the Church of England, Charles’s commitment to its life was whole-hearted. He usually began his day with two hours of private devotions, and he loved to attend the public liturgy, especially the Lord’s Supper. For eleven years Charles counted himself “the happiest king in Christendom” — and with good reason. Since England was at peace, he had no need to support a standing army or a large navy, and therefore no need to summon Parliament. His government was able to meet its needs by exploiting the customary prerogatives of the Crown. But behind the nation’s apparent tranquillity, Charles’s subjects seethed with grievances; and when he finally did call a Parliament, its members proved militant in their demands for redress and reform. In 1642 he felt he had no choice but to raise the royal standard against them. After three years of civil war Charles’s armies were defeated in the field, and he was taken prisoner. Parliament wished to reform the Church of England according to a presbyterian model, but Charles refused to surrender episcopacy and the Book of Common Prayer. An attempt to renew the civil war led the House of Commons to set the King on trial. The tribunal’s verdict was a foregone conclusion, and Charles was sentenced to death. On January thirtieth, 1649, he stepped out on to a public scaffold. “I have a good cause,” he said, “and I have a gracious God; I will say no more. But a little after I go from a corruptible to an incorruptible crown, where no disturbance can be, no disturbance in the world.” The King knelt, said a brief prayer, then laid his head on the block. He died under one stroke of the axe. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994
