Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection There is no principle of the heart that is more acceptable to God than a universal fervent love to all mankind, wishing and praying for their happiness, because there is no principle of the heart that makes us more like God, who is love and goodness itself and created all beings for their enjoyment of happiness. The greatest idea that we can frame of God is when we conceive him to be a Being of infinite love and goodness, using an infinite wisdom and power for the common good and happiness of all his creatures. The highest notion, therefore, that we can form of man is when we conceive him as like to God in this respect as he can be, using all his finite faculties, whether of wisdom, power, or prayers, for the common good of all his fellow creatures, heartily desiring they may have all the happiness they are capable of and as many benefits and assistances from him as his state and condition in the world will permit him to give them. And on the other hand, what a baseness and iniquity is there in all instances of hatred, envy, spite, and ill will, if we consider that every instance of them is so far acting in opposition to God and intending mischief and harm to those creatures which God favours, and protects, and preserves, in order to their happiness. An ill-natured man amongst God’s creatures is the most perverse creature in the world, acting contrary to that love by which himself subsists and which alone gives subsistence to all that variety of beings that enjoy life in any part of the creation. ‘Whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, even so do unto them.’ Now though this is a doctrine of strict justice, yet it is only a universal love that can comply with it. For as love is the measure of our acting toward ourselves, so we can never act in the same manner toward other people till we look upon them with that love with which we look upon ourselves. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Nehemiah. All the people gathered together into the square before the Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had given to Israel. Accordingly, the priest Ezra brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear with understanding. This was on the first day of the seventh month. He read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. Then Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, "Amen, Amen," lifting up their hands. Then they bowed their heads and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground. So they read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep." For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions of them to those for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy to our Lord; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body - Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear would say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honourable we clothe with greater honour, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honour to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honoured, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:12-31A

THE HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour." And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." Luke 4:14-21

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Formation on Sundays THE MYTH OF TODAY’S SECULAR WORLD-VIEW Many people assume that our world today is profoundly secular and that a secular world view is a necessary and logical result of modernity. Many of us accept the notion that an ideal moral and ethical political system can only operate in the absence of religious belief. In fact, however, religion has failed to disappear, and in the twenty-first century it thrives, diversifying and growing all over the world. In this series we confront the “myth” of the secular, shedding light upon the religious beliefs at the foundation of both our cultural epistemology and our social institutions. In the first part of this series we will play excerpts from a CBC radio broadcast entitled, “The Myth of the Secular” and discuss the contradictions behind the myth. We conclude with a look at the work of philosopher Charles Taylor (A Secular Age), who redefines secularization in light of its failure to uproot the religious and spiritual values of our age. St. James’ News & Announcements `THE PASCHAL CANDLE Most of you are familiar with the Paschal Candle. It is the first flame lit from the new fire at the Easter Vigil, which represents the light of Christ rising to dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds. The candle is marked by special symbols: the cross; the Greek letters for alpha and omega reminding us that God is the beginning and the end; the current year, representing God present with us now; and five grains of incense representing the five wounds of Christ. The Paschal Candle is processed into the church at the Easter Vigil and remains in its holder near the altar throughout the Easter season, during which it is lit at all Masses held in the main sanctuary. The Paschal Candle is specially made and must be ordered in advance of Easter. It costs in the neighbourhood of $200. If you would like to support this meaningful tradition by making a donation toward the cost of the candle, please add the amount to your offering envelope, and on the outside of the envelope write the amount and beside it write “Paschal Candle”. If you do not use envelopes but would like to donate, please call the Church Office. MOTHERS’ UNION PARENTING COURSE Please join us for the fourth session of the Mothers' Union Parenting Course on Wednesday morning 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon in the Bishops' Room. St. James’ News & Announcements TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION UPDATE FROM DIOCESE Dear Friends, This is the first of a series of regular updates you will receive over the next few months as we mobilize our Diocese to participate in the September 2013 Truth and Reconciliation National Event here in Vancouver. These communications are being sent to the designated contact person in each deanery, with copies to all Regional Deans, Archdeacons, the Diocesan Archivist, Bishop Mark MacDonald, and the Anglican representatives on the BC Ecumenical Advocates for Healing and Reconciliation. Please share these communications as widely as possible.

spiritual support, and, to a limited extent, logistical support for our Diocese's participation in the TRC hearings. 2. Idle No More This movement continues to gather momentum across the country and our church has declared its support for it. Non-indigenous people are welcome to participate in Idle No More events as they occur. Bishop Mark MacDonald has asked that we keep Chief Theresa Spence in our prayers, and also the meeting this coming Friday between leaders of the AFN and the Government of Canada. There are a number of Idle No More events planned for the Metro Vancouver area this Friday; please attend an event in your community if you can, and encourage others to do so.

1. TRC National Event, Vancouver.

3. Resources

The dates for the TRC event proper are Sept. 1821 (Wednesday-Saturday). In addition, the Indian Residential Schools Survivors' Society and Reconciliation Canada, in partnership with many other community groups including churches, are planning "book-end" events around the hearings. These are: the All Nations Canoe Gathering on Sept. 17; the event "A New Way Forward" at BC Place on the evening of Sept. 21; and a Walk for Reconciliation on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 22. Church participation is welcome, and indeed essential, at all three of these events as well as at the TRC hearings themselves. The TRC hearings will be held in the facilities of the PNE at Hastings Park, which is within the parish boundaries of St David of Wales. We are hoping that it will be possible to designate St David's as the "parish church" for the TRC event, and that the parish will be able to co-ordinate

Useful information and updates can be found on the website of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (www.trc.ca) and KAIROS Canada (www.kairoscanada.org). Also, Laurel Dykstra, Clarence Li, or myself would be happy to speak to a parish, deanery gathering, or other group or event. If you know of anyone else who would like to be part of this network and assist in getting the word out, please let me know and I will add his or her name to the list.

Free! PNE Forum, 2901 East Hastings Street You are all invited to come and help the Nisga’a Nation celebrate its New Year. There will be a full program of singing, drumming and dancing by many different dance groups over the two days. There will also be Native crafts and food for sale. It’s very informal - drop in anytime, stay as long as you wish, and enjoy the festivities. The word ‘Hobiyee’ comes from ‘hobich’ or ‘spoon.’ At this time of year the moon is shaped like the bowl of a spoon, and if the spoon is right-side up, it is a sign that food will be plentiful in the year to come. At the culmination of the celebrations a paper moon, suspended from the ceiling, is dropped down amongst the people and all shout “Hobiyee”! Come and celebrate with us! More info at www.tsamiks.com

SAVE YOUR STAMPS Please save your used postage stamps for a new ongoing fundraiser for our Street Outreach Initiative. We are collecting stamps of all ages from all countries. Please tell your friends so we can make this endeavour as successful as possible. Stamps can be dropped off in the office, or given to Reece Wrightman or another Narthex Guild member during mass on Sundays. Please place them in an envelope marked “Stamps for SOI .”
