A Reflection Lord, Give us this day our daily bread. May this simple prayer flourish in my heart and mind today. Let it teach me how wholly dependent I am on you for the basics, and how I can trust you for my needs. Jesus you asked us to ask. For the millions who have too little to eat today, have mercy. May all those in positions of power and abundance have mercy, too - mercy that provides for those in need. Show me my necessary part in your provision so those who need food and water can live in health, safety, and dignity. Jesus you told us to give. For the spiritually hungry – may they find deep nourishment in the bread of life. Be present to everyone whose soul is aching. Satisfy and sustain them. Jesus, only you are the bread of life. You Lord, are our provider and our provision. You can give me everything I need. And you are everything I need. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING

Reader
A reading from the Book of Nehemiah.
Reader Allll
The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, "Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you." So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, "Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
One day tells its tale to another, and one night imparts knowledge to another. Although they have no words or language, and their voices are not heard, Their sound has gone out into all lands, and their message to the ends of the world. Antiphon In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to run its course. It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens and runs about to the end of it again; nothing is hidden from its burning heat. Antiphon HIGH MASS | 9
The law of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent. The statutes of the Lord are just and rejoice the heart; the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes. Antiphon The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb. Antiphon By them also is your servant enlightened, and in keeping them there is great reward. Who can tell how often he offends? cleanse me from my secret faults. Antiphon Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion over me; then shall I be whole and sound, and innocent of great offense. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Antiphon Psalm 19
SECOND READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body - Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear would say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honourable we clothe with greater honour, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honour to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have

the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honoured, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts. 1 Corinthians 12:12-31A

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour." And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." Luke 4:14-21

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible Notes from the Clergy A week ago last Thursday a group of us went to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank to sort food and learn about the ways the Food Bank serves the people of Vancouver. We learned that 27,000 people rely on food from them each week and the warehouse where the food is received and sorted was massive.
It was an initiative that came out of the Thursday night study group, and others I invited along the way, who I thought might be interested in coming along. It was a one-off booked slot, but it could be something that groups from St. James’ do more regularly. The group that went enjoyed the work immensely and we had a hot drink together afterwards before heading home. One of the things I learned was that although the warehouse is well stocked now, the summer months can be very tough as people are not donating in the same volume as they do during the winter months.
Based on the enthusiasm of the group who went, feedback received online and from the staff at the Food Bank, I believe this creates an opportunity for us at St. James’ to contribute to those in need in our neighbourhood and beyond, by holding a food drive during June and July. You will be able to choose to fill a box, or donate to a box here in the church with individual items. So, we’re going to go for it! I will be getting supplies and boxes from the Food Bank for us to fill and Tara and I are committed to filling a box each to get us started! Look out for more news on that as time goes on! In the mean time I look forward to having lunch with you all at the Parish Council this Saturday and again with attendees and newcomers on Sunday after High Mass.

See you very soon, Mother Lucy
