Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant All Celebrant

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray.

All

Almighty and everliving God, whose Son Jesus Christ healed the sick and restored them to wholeness of life, look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by thy power make whole all peoples and nations; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy.

See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Happy are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! Happy are they who observe his decrees and seek him with all their hearts! Antiphon Who never do any wrong, but always walk in his ways. You laid down your commandments, that we should fully keep them. Antiphon Oh, that my ways were made so direct that I might keep your statutes! Then I should not be put to shame, when I regard all your commandments. Antiphon I will thank you with an unfeigned heart, when I have learned your righteous judgments. I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me. Antiphon Psalm 119:1-8

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarrelling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? For when one says, "I belong to Paul," and another, "I belong to Apollos," are you not merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labour of each. For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building. 1 Corinthians 3:1-9

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not murder'; and 'whoever murders shall be liable to judgement.' But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, 'You fool,' you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.' But I say to you, Do not HIGH MASS | 11

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Here we are, approximately two and a half weeks until Lent begins! A week ago Thursday night saw much celebration and jubilation as our community came together for the induction of Fr. Kevin as our permanent Rector. Dean Peter Elliot spoke about the importance of St. James’ both historically and in our neighbourhood today. Our Anglo-Catholic way of being is often what draws people to us, and is a beautiful way to live, worship and to grow into relationship with God and with each other. However, Dean Peter also urged us not to limit our imaginations as to how we are being called to live and serve Jesus, today, in our present. Who can we be together as we continue to practice inclusion, welcome and service? I believe these are important things for us to continue to ponder and discuss with each other, especially in light of the current global political climate. South of our border the government is narrowing its gaze to look inward, the same is true of the UK as they begin the break with the European Union. The walls are going up.

We must not allow our tradition to narrow our vision, but rather hold a wide gaze that is loving, inclusive, open, and the way of Jesus Christ. The one who taught us to call God “Father” calls us into relationship as family: brothers and sisters in Christ. Growing up in England people used to say to me (usually in the aftermath of a sibling related “incident”): “you can’t choose your family, you get what you get, warts and all!”

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

Here at St. James’ we are choosing to answer the call to be family, to be a royal priesthood, to knock down the walls that can creep in between us. Every time we gather together to worship and celebrate Mass we become one body in the one bread. I am glad to be part of this family, and I’m excited to see how we will grow together . . . warts and all!

THANK YOU To each person at St. James’ Church, who has given a donation, volunteered their time or has taken a moment to pray for the St. James’ Music Academy – thank you. Your compassion astounds us and fills our hearts. With your contribution, children in our community are being empowered to envision their true potential, their hidden gifts and express their inner voice. Most importantly, they can just be a child that is offered equal opportunity. This is no small task and is of significant value. Many thanks from all of us at SJMA. KID’S CORNER Hello Everyone! This is what Jesus tells us today in the Gospel: “Do not hold grudges!” You know when you are really mad at someone and you feel like you never want to play with them again? It is okay for a short time to feel that way, but God wants us to find a way to make up and be at peace with people. God asks us to let go of any grudges against anyone, to forgive, and to find a way to be in harmony with whoever has hurt or annoyed us, before we come to church to give our offering to God. God wants us to get it sorted as quickly as we can! Then once we have set things right by forgiveness or apology that's when we should offer our gifts to God. Hey God, Our prayer this week is to ask for your help to forgive those who have hurt us, or made us mad. It is super hard sometimes, we know, but if we remember how your Son forgave those who hurt him, that will give us strength to do it. Also God, please help the adults in our life do this: sometimes it is hard for them too. Amen. 27TH ANNUAL WOMEN'S MEMORIAL MARCH Tue. COMMEMORATION SS. Cyril, Monk, and Methodius, Bishop Missionaries to the Slavs, Patrons of Europe, 869, 885 February 14 On this day we honour the memory of Cyril and his older brother Methodius, who led a Byzantine mission to central Europe in the middle of the ninth century and for their labours have come to be known as “the apostles to the Slavs.” The two brothers belonged to the nobility of the Byzantine empire. Methodius became a senior administrator before he renounced the world and entered the monastic life; while Cyril held several important posts in the household of the patriarch of Constantinople. Because the two brothers were as fluent in Slavic as in their native Greek, the Byzantine emperor chose them to head an embassy to Moravia, a kingdom in central Europe, in the year 863.

869. The Pope asked his brother to return to Moravia as archbishop, and Methodius accepted the post, fearful that the Franks would otherwise destroy Cyril’s work. His fears were well-founded, and only the Pope’s firm support enabled him to continue his work. Even so, after his death in the year 885, the Franks wiped out all that he and his brother had accomplished in Moravia. Nevertheless, their followers found refuge in Bulgaria and from there managed to rebuild the heritage of the two brothers. This heritage has continued to nourish the Slavonic churches in the Balkans and in Central Europe to this day. For All the Saints: Prayers & Readings for Saints’ Days, ABC, 2010

Moravia had been Christianized by Frankish priests from across the Danube, but they insisted that the people accept Latin in worship and Frankish ways in everything else. By contrast, Cyril and Methodius began to build up a native, selfsustaining Church. Cyril invented a script so that the Slavs could write their own language, and he used it not only to translate large portions of Scripture for them but also to develop a distinctive Slavonic liturgy. After three years of successful labour the two brothers left for home. On their way they paid a visit to Rome, where the Pope gave their work his enthusiastic endorsement. Cyril died there, after a long illness, on February fourteenth in the year
