Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

Reflection “My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Amen. Thomas Merton, written at The Abbey of Gethsemane

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Leviticus. The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the Lord your God. You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the Lord. You shall not defraud your neighbour; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a labourer until morning. You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the Lord. You shall not render an unjust judgement; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbour. You shall not go around as a

slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbour: I am the Lord. You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbour, or you will incur guilt yourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord. Leviticus 19:1-2, 9-18

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep your law; I shall keep it with all my heart. Antiphon Make me go in the path of your commandments, for that is my desire. Incline my heart to your decrees and not to unjust gain. Antiphon Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless; give me life in your ways. Fulfill your promise to your servant, which you make to those who fear you. Antiphon Turn away the reproach which I dread, because your judgments are good. Behold, I long for your commandments; in your righteousness preserve my life. Antiphon Psalm 119:33-40

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple. Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He catches the wise in their craftiness," and again, "The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile." So let no one boast about human leaders. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future all belong to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, 16-23

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Matthew 5:38-48

SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Valentine’s Day is finally behind us…phew! I hope you all survived it and enjoyed spending some time with your nearest and dearest, or had the pleasure of a good rant about the consumerism of Valentine’s Day, and refused to partake! Looking ahead to next week, we will have our Annual Vestry meeting on February 26th after the High 10:30 am Mass, where new Wardens and other representatives for St. James’ will be elected. There is an elections board in the Chapel walkway if you would like to see the current nominations. This is an important date in our church calendar, when we review our reports and look back on what we have done, and look to the future: what is to come? It seems crazy to think that Ash Wednesday will follow the vestry meeting beginning on March 1, 2017. It is at this time year that people begin asking: what are you giving up for Lent? It might seem early to start considering this, but it is not.

We can easily dismiss Lent by simply picking something like chocolate or beer, and just giving it up, with a plan to gorge ourselves immediately before and after. If we can do it for 40 days, we can show God how strong we are, right? Right! It does take strength to abstain from the things we love, but if that is all we are doing, we are missing what God wants to give us. What is God inviting you to change this Lent? In quiet times when you are with God, what stirs in your heart? What are the behaviours that you know you are being called to change? When you find yourself in a situation where you know you should turn to God, do you turn to something else instead? Food, drink, a distraction like television? We each have to answer this ourselves and then during Lent when we feel the pull towards the thing we abstain from, turn to God in prayer. God will lead the way. We are not alone.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

If you plan to continue using parking space under Cooper Place, please remit your fee to the Church Office or put it into the collection plate on Sunday morning. KID’S CORNER This Gospel is all about us again! Jesus teaches us some pretty difficult lessons. Jesus says, that if someone hits our cheek, instead of hitting them back, he wants us to "turn the other cheek," to offer our other cheek as well! That would be hard for some of us to do, and it might take some practice, but it is the right thing to do. If someone calls us a name that hurts our feelings, instead of shouting back at them we should pray for them instead. It must not be a nice feeling to be angry all the time. The important thing to remember is if we do this, we show we are God’s children and that we want to do the right thing. God will also forgive us if we

need practice to get it right. We please God if we try our best to do the right thing, to love God and our neighbours. God, thanks for these teachings on how to be with you. Please help and encourage us to pray for people we do not get on with in hopes that they will experience your grace. Amen.
