A Reflection SONNET FOR EPIPHANY It might have been just someone else’s story, Some chosen people get a special king. We leave them to their own peculiar glory, We don’t belong, it doesn’t mean a thing. But when these three arrive they bring us with them, Gentiles like us, their wisdom might be ours; A steady step that finds an inner rhythm, A pilgrim’s eye that sees beyond the stars. They did not know his name but still they sought him, They came from otherwhere but still they found; In temples they found those who sold and bought him, But in the filthy stable, hallowed ground. Their courage gives our questing hearts a voice To seek, to find, to worship, to rejoice. From Sounding the Seasons, Malcolm Guite

All

At the offering of gold: Blessed art thou, Lord our God, King of the universe: to thee be praise and glory for ever. As gold in the furnace is tried and purified seven times in the fire, so purify our hearts and minds that we may be a royal priesthood acceptable in the service of thy kingdom. Blessed be God for ever.

All

At the offering of incense: Blessed art thou, Lord our God, King of the universe: to thee be praise and glory for ever. As our prayer rises up before thee as incense, so may we be presented before thee with penitent hearts and uplifted hands to offer ourselves in thy priestly service. Blessed be God for ever.

All

At the offering of myrrh: Blessed art thou, Lord our God, King of the universe: to thee be praise and glory for ever. As thou givest medicine to heal our sickness and the leaves of the tree of life for the healing of the nations, so anoint us with thy healing power that we may be the first-fruits of thy new creation. Blessed be God for ever.

HYMN (continued) Thou who in a manger once hast lowly lain, who dost now in glory o'er all kingdoms reign, gather in the peoples who in lands afar ne'er have seen the brightness of thy guiding star. Gather in the outcasts, all who’ve gone astray, throw thy radiance o’er them, guide them on their way; those who never knew thee, those who’ve wandered far, guide them by the brightness of thy guiding star. Onward through the darkness of the lonely night, shining still before them with thy kindly light. Guide them, Jew and Gentile, homeward from afar, young and old together, by thy guiding Star. Until every nation, whether bond or free, 'neath thy starlit banner, Jesus, follows thee. O'er the distant mountains to that heavenly home, where nor sin nor sorrow evermore shall come.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses' arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the king's son; That he may rule your people righteously and the poor with justice; That the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, and the little hills bring righteousness. For he shall deliver the poor who cries out in distress, and the oppressed who has no helper. Antiphon He shall have pity on the lowly and poor; he shall preserve the lives of the needy. He shall redeem their lives from oppression and violence, and dear shall their blood be in his sight. Antiphon Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14

SECOND READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. Ephesians 3:1-12

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. HIGH MASS | 13

On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; (here genuflect) and they knelt down and paid him homage. (Stand) Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. Matthew 2:1-12

HYMN

Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 139 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — The First Nowell

The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter's night that was so deep.

Refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night.

Refrain

And by the light of that same star three wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went.

Refrain

This star drew nigh to the northwest, o'er Bethlehem it took its rest, and there it did both stop and stay right over the place where Jesus lay. Refrain

Then entered in those wise men three full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

Please note below: THE PROCLAMATION OF THE DATE OF EASTER | traditionally made on the Feast of the Epiphany

Dear brothers and sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation. Let us recall the year’s culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial, and his rising celebrated between the evening of the eighteenth of April and the evening of the twenty-first of April. Each Easter—as on each Sunday— the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the sixth of March. The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on the thirtieth of May. Pentecost, the joyful conclusion of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on the ninth of June. And this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on the first of December. Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the Passover of Christ in the feasts of the holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed.

To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of time and history, be endless praise, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Thurible Notes from the Clergy More visitors! First there were angels and shepherds, now strangers from distant lands: men on an expedition, seeking a newborn king. They have set out in faith, not knowing where the star will lead. After diversions here and there, not least Herod’s court in Jerusalem, they arrive in Bethlehem. Entering the stable they find Mary and Joseph with the Christ-child. Bowing low in adoration they present their gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. Mission accomplished, they then return home. St. Matthew in the account of the Epiphany makes clear right at the beginning of his Gospel that Jesus is the Messiah, God’s Chosen One, not only for the people of Israel, but for all nations, represented by these Magi, Wise Men, travelling from afar. Traditionally, the three gifts are seen as pointers, signs, of who this Jesus is: gold for kingship, incense for divinity, myrrh, one of the spices used in the ointment for burial: Jesus, God’s Son, the shepherd king who will give his life for all peoples and nations. As the Epiphany season unfolds, we shall hear other Gospel-pointers, signs, of who

Jesus is: his Baptism, the Wedding at Cana, the Presentation in the Temple, the Transfiguration: Godwith-us, revealing God-self active and present in the creation.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

Are we ready, like the Wise Men, to seek out God’s presence amongst us today? What are the signs, the pointers, in and around us? What are the gifts we will bring? If we are the Body of Christ, what signs, pointers, are visible in and through us to others who are seeking and searching? Let us rejoice with the Wise Men, and come before the Lord in wonder, love and praise. Fr. Kevin
