As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A Reflection Who, being a mortal, can tell about the Reviver of all, Who left the height of his majesty and came down to smallness? You, who magnify all by being born, magnify my weak mind that I may tell about your birth, not to investigate your majesty, but to proclaim your grace. Blessed is he who is both hidden and revealed in his actions! It is a great wonder that the Son, who dwelt entirely in a body, inhabited it entirely, and it sufficed for him. Although limitless, he dwelt in it. His will was entirely in him; but his totality was not in him. Who is sufficient to proclaim that although he dwelt entirely in a body, still he dwelt entirely in the universe? Blessed is the Unlimited who was limited! A reading from the Letter to the Ephesians. This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. Dear brothers and sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation. Let us recall the year’s culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial, and his rising celebrated between the evening of the twenty-eighth of March and the evening of the thirty-first of March. Each Easter—as on each Sunday— the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the thirteenth of February. The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on the ninth of May. Pentecost, the joyful conclusion of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on the nineteenth of May. And this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on the first of December. Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the Passover of Christ in the feasts of the holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed. To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of time and history, be endless praise, for ever and ever. Amen.

Formation on Sundays CHRISTIAN ECUMENICISM During the third week of January, churches across the northern hemisphere observe an event called the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. “At least once a year,” as the World Council of Churches tells us, “many Christians become aware of the great diversity of ways of adoring God. Hearts are touched, and people realize that their neighbours' ways are not so strange.” This January, in celebration of our commonality as Christians, we will explore ecumenicism. “Ecumenicism” is a word that means nothing less than the promotion or movement toward worldwide Christian unity or cooperation. After exploring the history of western ecumenical movements, we will learn about efforts made as particular Christian denominations reach out to others in loving dialogue: January 13: Roman Catholic ecumenicism. THE MYTH OF TODAY’S SECULAR WORLD-VIEW Many people assume that our world today is profoundly secular and that a secular world view is a necessary and logical result of modernity. Many of us accept the notion that an ideal moral and ethical political system can only operate in the absence of religious belief. In fact, however, religion has failed to disappear, and in the twenty-first century it thrives, diversifying and growing all over the world. In this series we confront the “myth” of the secular, shedding light upon the religious beliefs at the foundation of both our cultural epistemology and our social institutions. In the first part of this series we will play excerpts from a CBC radio broadcast entitled, “The Myth of the Secular” and discuss the contradictions behind the myth. We conclude with a look at the work of philosopher Charles Taylor (A Secular Age), who redefines secularization in light of its failure to uproot the religious and spiritual values of our age. St. James’ News & Announcements THE AMUNDGAARDS We bid goodbye to Ben, Jen, Sophia, and Dylan James Amundgaard who are soon moving permanently to Bellingham for exciting new work opportunities. We shall miss them very much - as members of the Readers' and Servers' guilds, the Board of Trustees, contributors to PAX - and in so many ways active supporters of the life of St. James'; the whole family has been a vital part of our Parish. Our prayers are with them all as they begin their new life: but we may say, "Not farewell, / But fare forward, voyagers". PARISH COUNCIL MEETING Saturday, January 26, 2013 All parishioners are invited to attend the next Parish Council meeting to be held after the 10:15 am mass. This meeting will run from 11:00am to 2:00pm. As usual, coffee and delicious refreshments will be provided. We look forward to having you join us on January 26th. Jane Turner CANADA’S TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION Please join us at St. James’ Anglican Church, 303 East Cordova after High Mass at noon, Sunday, January 20th in the Bishops’ Room for a bowl of soup and conversation about St. James’ commitment to undo racism in our churches and communities and support the September 17 to 22 TRC events in Vancouver. We will update you on these events and ask for your ideas on what we can be doing at St. James’ to decolonize ourselves. Archbishop Fred J. Hiltz of the Anglican Church of Canada, said on January 1, 2013, “Love and
right relations, one with another -- that is the real work of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Rooted in the tradition of the prophets and the gospel of Jesus, the churches have something to say about reconciliation, the sincerity of apology and the patience to wait for acceptance. We look to a new day when racism is a thing of the past and when relations between the First Nations Peoples of this land and all others who call it home are marked by respect.” HOUSE BLESSINGS IN EPIPHANY The Church offers a special service of house blessing for its members. MOTHERS’ UNION PARENTING COURSE Begins Wednesday, January 9, 10am to 12pm (Wednesday mornings for 8 weeks) This course - ‘Parents Supporting Parents’ - is open to all who have the responsibility of caring for children. The course is free, materials are provided, and participants are encouraged to share their experience and strategies with one another. Parents may bring new babies, and if they need to bring toddlers or young children childcare will be provided. The Mothers’ Union will serve a light lunch of soup after each session.
