Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Your vow to remain unmarried for the sake of God’s Kingdom will draw you into the loneliness of the cross of Jesus and reveal the basic loneliness of every man. At the same time it invites you to build up a fellowship with Him and to establish the kingdom of love among men. By not marrying you put an end to the cycle of procreation and death. You are beginning a new kind of existence in the incorruptibility of a new-born generation, and the unimagined fruitfulness of the Kingdom of God. To be unmarried does not mean for you the renouncing of love, contempt for the body or fear of marriage. No, — it is the bringing of your potential for love into the new and unlimited fruitfulness of the Kingdom. So you are called to be witness to love, and its begetter, an encouragement to all who are seeking love’s genuine image. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

Entrance Rite At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand.

Stand

INTROIT But as for us, it behoveth us to glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ: in whom is our salvation, our life, and resurrection; by whom we were saved and obtained our freedom. Psalm God be merciful unto us and bless us: and show us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us. Glory be to the Father‌ Nos autem (Mode VI)

SOLEMN PROCESSION

During the solemn procession the following hymn will be sung. A station will be made during the procession; the versicle, response and prayer for this are printed below.

HYMN 187 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — As Royal Banners Are Unfurled As royal banners are unfurled, the cross displays its mystery: the Maker of our flesh, in flesh, impaled and hanging helplessly. Already deeply wounded: see his side now riven by a spear, and all our sins are swept away by blood and water flowing here.

6 | HIGH MASS

See everything the prophets wrote fulfilled in its totality, and tell the nations of the world our God is reigning from a tree. This tree, ablaze with royal light and with the blood-red robe it wears, is hallowed and embellished by the weight of holiness it bears. Stretched like a balance here, his arms have gauged the price of wickedness; but, hanging here, his love outweighs hell's unforgiving bitterness. The Savior, victim, sacrifice, is, through his dying, glorified; his life is overcome by death and leaps up, sweeping death aside. We hail the cross, faith's one true hope: God's passion set in time and space, by which our guilt is blotted out, engulfed in such stupendous grace.

STATION COLLECT Celebrant Allll

God forbid that I should glory: Save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Celebrant

Let us pray. O blessed Saviour, who by thy cross and passion hast given life unto the world: Grant that we thy servants may be given grace to take up the cross and follow thee through life and death; whom with the Father and the Holy Spirit we worship and glorify, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Numbers. The people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food." Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, "Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live." So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. Numbers 21:4b-9

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. With his right hand and his holy arm has he won for himself the victory. Antiphon He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. Shout with joy to the Lord all you lands; lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. Sing to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the voice of song. Antiphon Psalm 98:1-2, 4-6

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart." Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18-24

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Jesus said, "No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." John 3:13-17

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. 66 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — And Now, O Father, Mindful of the Love And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary's Tree, and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we spread forth to thee that only Offering perfect in thine eyes, the one, true, pure, immortal Sacrifice. Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord.

And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing Presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy's breast, O do thine utmost for their souls' true weal; from tainting mischief keep them white and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Savior, who canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.

HYMN 386 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — When I Survey the Wondrous Cross When I survey the wondrous cross where the young Prince of Glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the cross of Christ, my God: all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5.3 This beatitude is an expression of Anawim spirituality that grew out of the experience of God’s people after their return from Babylonian captivity. This is the spirituality that Jesus grew up with and which he reinterpreted, developed and focused in original ways. Sandra M. Schneiders in her book Buying the Field, explains that this poverty is not just economic or sociological, but mainly spiritual. Out of the experience of suffering in exile a faithful, loyal people was forged who were waiting faithfully for the Messiah. They were economically poor, oppressed within their society and voiceless; but they confidently looked to God alone for their redemption. The word “poor” had become a religious description for the humble, for those who sought justice, for those who were truly loyal to God and truly kept his laws. They were open to God and trusted God with all their hearts.

the world, structures of domination and power over others prevailed. Whether the system of dominance and oppression is through Empire or feudalism or market economics, the results are similar. As people of God, Jesus calls us to a new vision of the world which he called the Kingdom of Heaven. It involves a heroic idealism and courage; complete trust in God, frugality, simplicity, sharing and inventiveness. It is voluntary with a community living out a sustaining frugality where there is equity to all community resources. There is unselfish sharing in community life, moderation in the use of material goods, simplicity of life, and financial accountability. There is responsible work and solidarity with the poor.

This is the alternative reality that followers of the Way of Jesus are called, where the values of God take precedence over the values of the world. Where all systems work to bring about God’s Kingdom of life where there is a Anawim spirituality understood balanced lifestyle that frees minds that economic poverty was never and hearts and bodies for love and God’s plan which was to provide for mercy, social justice, and the well-being and dignity of all. freedom. Measuring God’s Love From our Gospel reading, John, chapter 3 verse 16: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. This is one of the most-loved verses in the Bible, "For God so loved the world." But just how great is God's love? Could we measure it? Think for a minute about the different sorts of things we use for measuring. Might one of them help us to measure God's love? Sometimes we use a measuring cup to measure things. If you were making some cookies, you would use a measuring cup to make sure that I put in exactly the right amount of flour, sugar, and milk. Might we use a measuring cup to measure God's love? The Bible says, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want....my cup runs over." (Psalm 23:1,5) Well, if our cup runs over with God's love, then we could not use a measuring cup to measure it. If we were building something, we might use a tape measure to measure the length, width, and height of different things. Might we use a tape measure to measure God's love? The Bible tells us that God's love is higher than the heavens. (Psalm 108:4) If God's love is higher than the heavens, then a tape measure will not be able to measure it. We use a watch to measure time. There will probably be some people here this morning who will use their watch to measure how long the sermon lasts. Would a watch be able to measure how long God's love will THE THURIBLE | 29 19

last? The Bible tells us that God's love is from everlasting to everlasting. (Psalm 103:17) Wow! If God's love is from everlasting to everlasting, then we’ll not be able to measure it with a watch. "For God so loved the world, that he gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." How do we measure a love like that? We can't measure it – it is far too broad and wide and high and long to measure -but we are able to experience it when we see how God loves us by inviting us to share life together in Jesus. “May we understand how wide, how long, how high, and how deep God’s love really is. May we experience it, though it is so great we will never fully understand it." (from Ephesians 3:18-19) Heavenly Father, we thank you for your love -- a love so great that you gave your one and only Son so that we could have eternal life. Amen. A CALL TO PRAYER AND ACTION: SYRIAN MIGRANT CRISIS “The Turkish policeman is us. Alan Kurdi is our child. We knew that in the first moment we saw their pictures in [today’s] papers. We knew that in our gut, and when our heart’s cry poured out through our eyes. Our senses involuntarily respond and urgently demand that we act individually and as a human community.” Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, and Adele Finney, Executive Director of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) Sometimes I feel helpless…these problems seem overwhelming…what can I do to help? A question many of us ask ourselves, and yes, there are things we can do to help these regular folk undergoing great peril and suffering to claim a little safety and hope for a peaceful future.

The OC has approved a grant of $2,500.00 for this project and we would like St. James’ parishioners to match or exceed this amount. We do not want to detract from your regular giving but ask that you dedicate a few extra dollars to the Outreach Committee Refugee Fund. This can be designated through envelope giving or means of your choice to the church office. This project and process will fit together slowly like a jigsaw puzzle, each piece into place gradually until we can contribute proportionately to a larger picture of refuge and hope for our middle eastern neighbors experiencing great suffering. Let us pray and demonstrate the empathy demanded of us as Christians in acts of love and compassion consistent with our Anglo-Catholic tradition.

FROM THE ARCHBISHOP VOTE: AN ANGLICAN APPROACH FOR ELECTION 2015 From the Primate, Archbishop Fred Hiltz Anglicans approach life in the world through a faith that is based on scripture, tradition, and reason. Time and again, God calls us through Holy Scripture and ancient and modern prophets to build a society based on justice and righteousness, a kingdom of compassion and justice. Anglican tradition is one of “walking with others,” learning about and respecting other beliefs and faiths. Anglican long-standing commitment to reason helps us hold opposing views in creative tension, finding the common good through prayerful discernment. Compassion and justice, tempered by reason, form the basis for three broad sub-themes for the coming federal election, designed to respond to the Gospel call: • To respond to human need by loving service; • To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation; and • To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the Earth. Bridging Divides We live in a country of abundance, yet not all benefit. Among the most vulnerable are the many who are homeless or living in precarious or

unaffordable housing, children living in poverty with little hope for a brighter future, and young people who are underemployed and increasingly alienated from the political process. Their voice is not heard and their needs are not reflected adequately in election platforms. A compassionate and just society cares for the most vulnerable. Governments need to be encouraged to pursue concerted and collaborative approaches to bridge these divides—to end homelessness, to eliminate child poverty, and to give hope to future generations. Restoring Right Relations We live in a country that believes in democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. And yet, we find ourselves facing major challenges—in our relations with the First Peoples of this land, our care and responsibility for the environment, and the balance of rights and freedoms with safety and security in a diverse society. Responding to these challenges requires new conversations between government and people. Promoting Peace and Stability We live in a country that is an active member within a global system of relationships, including the privileged G7 group of countries. Canada’s voice can make a difference in promoting peace and stability and the growth and prosperity of our world. Words, however, have greater effect when they are matched with action. As partners with government, we encourage greater generosity in our international assistance, greater commitment and streamlined processes to welcome refugees, and continued efforts to find a meaningful approach to peace in the Middle East. COMMEMORATION Holy Cross Day September 14 Early in the fourth century the emperor Constantine took the Christian Church under his protection, and to show his imperial benevolence he ordered a grand church to be built in Jerusalem. The site he chose was Golgotha, the hill where Jesus of Nazareth was crucified and buried. It had once stood outside the city walls, but before the time of Constantine the hill had been levelled and buried under tons of debris. The entire area had to be excavated for Constantine’s new church, and the emperor put his mother Helena in charge of the work. In the course of digging the labourers discovered a large beam; and the authorities soon decided that it was a remnant of the very same cross on which the Lord had been crucified. Portions of this beam were enshrined near the altar of the new church when it was dedicated in honour of the Resurrection on September fourteenth in the year 335; and ever since then, in the East and in the West, Christians have kept this date as Holy Cross Day. Jesus was crucified at the time of year when people in the northern hemisphere prepare the earth for planting. But September is harvest, our time for reaping and sharing what the earth, under our care, has brought forth. Just so with our remembrance of the Holy Cross. On Good Friday we recalled its planting at the seedtime of the new creation; and now, on the verge of autumn, we look for Christ, the true Vine which the Cross supported, to bear the fruit of justice and mercy not only in our own lives but also in the dealings of the world.
