Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.

As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance, and the accessible washroom is in the Parish Centre. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection AVE CRUX THOU ART welcome, Holy Cross of our God! Thou bringest light: thou shewest the wisdom of God and the power of God. Thou bringest love; for so God loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son to bear thee and to be borne by thee. Thou bringest life, on whom the Saviour is lifted up to die and to draw all people unto him. Thou bringest freedom and forgiveness, through the nails which held thy Lord to thee, through the precious Blood which angels gathered and people drink. Thou hast set a throne on the soil of our earth whereon people can see the heart of GOD, and bow and adore. LORD JESUS, let me not fear nor hesitate to take from thy hands the disciple’s cross; and carry it, whatsoever its weight or pain, with all the children of faith. Let me follow the Master’s way and Master’s will, to thy goal, thy glory. My God My Glory, Eric Milner-White: SPCK, 1967

HYMN 200 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — We Sing the Praise of Him Who Died We sing the praise of him who died, of him who died upon the cross; the sinner's hope let flesh deride; for this we count the world but loss. Inscribed upon the cross we see in shining letters, "God is love." He bears our sins upon the tree; he brings us mercy from above. The cross— it takes our guilt away; it holds the fainting spirit up; it cheers with hope the gloomy day, and sweetens every bitter cup; it makes the coward spirit brave, and nerves the feeble arm for fight; it takes its terror from the grave, and gilds the bed of death with light. The balm of life, the cure of woe, the measure and the pledge of love, the sinner's refuge here below, the angels' theme in heaven above.

Reader
A reading from the Book of Numbers
Reader Allll
From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.’ Then the LORD sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, ‘We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD to take away the serpents from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said to Moses, ‘Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.’ So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. Numbers 21:4b-9 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvellous things. With his right hand and his holy arm has he won for himself the victory. Antiphon The Lord has made known his victory; his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. Antiphon Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. Sing to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the voice of song. Antiphon Psalm 98:1-6 SOLEMN MASS | 9
SECOND READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of Corinthians. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’ Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18-24

Jesus said, “No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:13-17 The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. For the redemption of the world by the death and passion of our Saviour Christ, both God and Man; who did humble himself, even to the death upon the Cross for us sinners, who lay in darkness and the shadow of death; that he might make us the children of God, and exalt us to everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Sit or kneel 66 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — And Now, O Father, Mindful of the Love And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary's Tree, and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we spread forth to thee that only Offering perfect in thine eyes, the one, true, pure, immortal Sacrifice. Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord. And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing Presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy's breast, O do thine utmost for their souls' true weal; from tainting mischief keep them white and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.

HYMM 386 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — When I Survey the Wondrous Cross When I survey the wondrous cross where the young Prince of Glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the cross of Christ, my God: all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES Fall has arrived, it seems, and with it schools and churches begin a new term. St. James’ is no exception! The choir is back, and this week Formation sessions begin with a new book study. We shall have the Stewardship Program in November, preceded by our Dedication Festival on October 6 when we shall focus on what it is to be the Body of Christ together in this place. How do we sustain our Guilds and Ministries, to continue to offer our worship and witness day by day? I came across a quotation the other day which seems to reflect contemporary society’s approach to life in general, but maybe in the life of the church too: “we want to be connected without being encumbered.” If everyone has this attitude, then nothing will get done. Your church needs you! How might God be calling you to use your gifts in the life of the church and in God’s mission in the world?
Dr. Jason Brown, our sacristan and one of our servers, has been engaged over the past couple of years in discernment of a vocation to the priesthood. An important part of this has been conversation for the past six months with a discernment group in the parish. Jason is now ready to move onto the next stage in the process, which will be an extended placement in a different parish, St Mary’s, Kerrisdale. Today will be Jason’s last regular Sunday at St. James’ for the time being. We are grateful for his presence amongst us, and for his contribution to our life and ministry. We assure him of our good wishes and prayers as he and the wider church continue to seek God’s will for him.

BOOK STUDY Tired of Apologizing for a Church I Don’t Belong To, by Lillian Daniel In this book, Daniel argues that it's time for Christians to stop apologizing and realize that how we talk about Christian community matters. With disarming candor laced with just the right amount of humor, Daniel urges open-minded Christians to explore ways to talk about their faith journeys that are reasonable, rigorous, and real! Leah Postman and Mother Lucy will be running a two-week book study on Wednesdays Sept. 18 & Oct. 2 at 6 pm, and on Thursdays Sept. 19 & Oct. 3 at 10:15 am, in order to give everyone interested the opportunity to attend. HURRICANE DORIAN EMERGENCY RESPONSE In response to the immediate and urgent needs on the ground in the Bahamas, due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Dorian, PWRDF is receiving donations and will work with the Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) of the Episcopal Church of the United States. ERD is working through the Anglican Alliance (AA) of which PWRDF is also a member. ERD is the only AA member that at this point is connecting with local churches in Bahamas and developing an action plan to respond to the emergency. Many of the churches in parts of the Bahamas were destroyed and priests, their families, and fellow parishioners are equally affected by the immediate basic needs of food, shelter, clean water, health care etc. All will welcome a helping hand from trusted partners like ERD to aid them in this time of distress. ERD is playing the leadership role of immediately responding to this emergency, that is why PWRDF will support their on-the-ground work to alleviate suffering, and help them rebuild their communities.
