If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.

You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection JESUS IS COME Jesus is come-the Word of God hath spoken it: first to Mary by the tongue of her travail, to Joseph next in the night-visions, to poor shepherds by a chorus of angels, to the wise and wealthy through the shining of a star, to the whole world by a Babe. The Word of God hath spoken it, JESUS IS COME-to save the pitiful lost children of men; save, by the glory of a lowly life, which all eyes should see; save, by the voice of truth which all ears may hear; save, by the compassion of a heart, which we pierced. The Word of God, HIMSELF, hath spoken it, JESUS, SAVIOUR, IS COME that we might have life more and more abundantly, His infinite lowliness hath exalted us, his infinite love forgiven and renewed, his infinite majesty summoned us to an infinite hope and crown. JESUS IS COME-who is over all, God, blessed for ever.

Entrance Rite PRELUDE Chorale preludes for Christmas from the Orgelbüchlein – J. S. Bach At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand.

HYMN 121 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary; and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to all the earth.

How silently, how silently, the wondrous Gift is given as love imparts to human hearts the blessings of God's heaven! No ear may hear his coming but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel.

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant All Celebrant

All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, thou hast shed upon us the new light of thine incarnate Word. May this light, enkindled in our hearts, shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Isaiah. I will recount the gracious deeds of the Lord, the praiseworthy acts of the Lord, because of all that the Lord has done for us, and the great favour to the house of Israel that he has shown them according to his mercy, according to the abundance of his steadfast love. For he said, "Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely"; and he became their saviour in all their distress. It was no messenger or angel but his presence that saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. Isaiah 63:7-9

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights. Praise him, all you angels of his; praise him, all his host. Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars. Antiphon Praise him, heaven of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the Lord; for he commanded, and they were created. He made them stand fast for ever and ever; he gave them a law which shall not pass away. Antiphon Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea-monsters and all deeps; Fire and hail, snow and fog, tempestuous wind, doing his will; Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars; Wild beasts and all cattle, creeping things and winged birds; Antiphon Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the world; Young men and maidens, old and young together. Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name only is exalted, his splendour is over earth and heaven. Antiphon He has raised up strength for his people and praise for all his loyal servants, the children of Israel, a people who are near him. Antiphon Psalm 148

SECOND READING Reader

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, "I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you." And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I and the children whom God has given me." Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. Hebrews 2:10-18

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, "Out of Egypt I have called my son." When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more." When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead." Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to the district of Galilee. There he made his home in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, "He will be called a Nazorean." Matthew 2:13-23

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES Looking back and moving forward . . . It is no easy thing to leave a place where I have learned so much and been loved and supported by so many. When I arrived as a student here in October 2014, I had no idea what a huge part the people, worship and time here would contribute to my life with God. It is fair to say that on arrival I could barely do up the buttons of my cassock straight, let alone imagine myself celebrating my first Mass here. Here are some of the highlights: working with Fr Mark, Fr Matthew, Fr Kevin and Deacon Joyce; the Heart of the City Festival each year; the Inclusion event with the Liturgists; getting out into the community, meeting our neighbours, walking the streets and attending meetings and protests. Attending the reconciliation feast in 2017 gave me new perspectives on social justice and the need for reconciliation. Tara and I had our marriage blessing here. Over 180 people came to witness and celebrate with us. We were both overwhelmed by the love and support we felt that day.

Relationships, witness, and the love of God. Oh . . . and cake! Formation sessions have challenged me to live out my faith in new ways. I have learned to get comfortable with not having all the answers – and not having to – while your priest. The choir and music are amazing, the hospitality and welcome is generous and compassionate, all the behind the scenes action in the guilds and in the office is an incredible cat wrangling miracle! The Spirit of God is at work in all its glory every day in you and in this place.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

I am grateful for all you have done to encourage and shape me along the way. I am heartened to see ministries like Open Church becoming lay led, and am proud of what we have achieved through the Parish Development Grant, and the communications project. St. James’ will always have a special place in my heart, and I will continue to hold the people in this community and neighbourhood in my prayers. With my thanksgivings, love and blessing, Mother Lucy
