Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books just in front of the piano, and in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection A Reading from The Shape of the Liturgy by Gregory Dix Was ever another command so obeyed? For century after century, spreading slowly to every continent and country and among every race on earth, this action has been done, in every conceivable human circumstance, for every conceivable human need from infancy and before it to extreme old age and after it, from the pinnacles of earthly greatness to the refuge of fugitives in the caves and dens of the earth. Men have found no better thing than this to do for kings at their crowning and for criminals going to the scaffold; for armies in triumph or for a bride and bridegroom in a little country church; for the proclamation of a dogma or for a good crop of wheat; for the wisdom of the Parliament of a mighty nation or for a sick old woman afraid to die; for a schoolboy sitting an examination or for Columbus setting out to discover America; for the famine of whole provinces or for the soul of a dead lover; - one could fill many pages with the reasons why men have done this, and not tell a hundredth part of them. And best of all, week by week and month by month, on a hundred thousand successive Sundays faithfully, unfailingly, across all the parishes of Christendom, the pastors have done this just to make the plebs sancta Dei - the holy common people of God. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be Seated

A reading from the book of Deuteronomy. Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments. He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid waste-land with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock, and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good. Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14-16

Reader All

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter

How shall I repay the Lord for all the good things he has done for me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. Antiphon O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant and the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon the name of the Lord. Antiphon Psalm 116:10-11, 14-15 8 | HIGH MASS

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 1 Cor 10:16-17

Sub-deacon All

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA

A cantor begins the alleluia; all repeat it thereafter.

Alleluia. I am the living bread that came down from heaven: so that one may eat of it and not die. Alleluia. My flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed: he that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood dwelleth in me, and I in him. Alleluia. Caro mea vere (Mode V)

HOLY GOSPEL

All turn to face the book of the Gospels

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’ John 6:51-58

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things. Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who, having loved his own which were in the world, loved them unto the end, and on the night before he suffered did institute these holy mysteries, that we receiving the benefits of his Passion, and being quickened by his Resurrection, might be made partakers of his divine nature, and be filled with all the fullness of God. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name: evermore praising thee and saying:

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

Allll

Allll

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY I could not begin my first submission of Notes from the Clergy without a huge word of thanks: to Bishop Melissa, Fr. Fenton, the Wardens and the Canonical Committee, and indeed, above all, to God, for the call to become your interim priest; and to you all for the warmth of your welcome, to me and to Allan. I look forward to sharing in the life, mission and witness of St. James' in these coming months as we wait upon God and reflect together on where God is leading us in the next stage of St. James' pilgrimage. Faithful to our baptismal calling and our Catholic heritage, how does God want us to live out and proclaim the Gospel afresh in this and the upcoming generation? And as we look at the changing community in which St. James' is set, where do we see fresh signs of the coming of God's kingdom of love, of justice, of forgiveness and reconciliation, and of peace? And once seen, how do we celebrate this kingdom and, with those around us, enter in? Both in learning about St. James' before we came, and in this past first week as your priest, I have been profoundly moved by your commitment to the Opus Dei, the Work of God, the Church's daily round of Office and Eucharist, and

your past and present passion for the DTES community, with both its joys and its challenges. Long may these two strands of our Christian vocation continue! I have found particularly powerful the engagement of local community groups in tolling our bell during these 22 Days in remembrance of the murdered and lost Indigenous women. As the bell rings out over the parish, church and community together remember, and cry out for justice. On Monday last the Church celebrated the transferred Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. You will recall that both women were pregnant, and that, according to Luke, when they met the unborn John the Baptist leapt in his mother Elizabeth's womb in the joy of recognising in the womb of Mary the unborn Christ-Child. There is a lesson for us all here, to pray for grace to recognise the image of Christ in all around us, those whom we may to our shame consider unlovely as well as the lovely, and also that by grace the image of Christ may be recognised in us, individually and as the Church, unlovely though we sometimes are. Then together we too shall leap for joy!

It’s a good time to simplify our lives so that we have more time to relax and “re-create” ourselves. Your regular parish giving can be streamlined this summer by enrolling in our pre -authorized donation program. You can take weekend getaways or vacations without the time and trouble of “catching up” later on your donations. The church will appreciate the regular, dependable flow of contributions and you will appreciate the convenience of having your offerings made “automatically.”

Please pick up a pamphlet from the Narthex explaining the program. There is a simple tear-off application form attached. If you still have questions or need help, the Church Office will be happy to assist you. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: PARISH COUNCIL OFFICERS With our current Parish Council Chair (Jenny Scott) and Secretary (Tracy Russell) both moving on to new endeavours, we are in need of volunteers to be elected to these important parish positions. Parish Council meetings are presently held three times per year; 11:00 am to 2:00 pm on the last Saturday in January, May and September. The CHAIR helps in planning each meeting agenda and chairs and facilitates the meetings. The SECRETARY publishes meeting notices, takes and distributes meeting minutes and also helps prepare each meeting agenda. Parish members interested in volunteering or learning more about either of these important parish positions are invited to contact Jenny Scott, Tracy Russell, the church office or any of the wardens or clergy. Brian Rocksborough-Smith, for the Wardens GODLY PLAY AT PARISH COUNCIL At our upcoming May 30 Parish Council meeting Ruth Monette, from our diocesan office, will briefly discuss Godly Play training opportunities, available for interested St. James’ members. Godly Play is an approach to spiritual formation for children in church. It involves “play” with the language of God and God's people through sacred stories, parables, liturgical actions and silences. Several churches in our diocese have had volunteers participate in Godly Play training and are now in various stages of using these strategies and activities with their children in church on Sundays. We look forward to hearing more at our May 30 Parish Council meeting. Brian Rocksborough-Smith, for the Wardens

KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. Gospel: In today’s Gospel reading we hear Jesus proclaiming that he is the Bread of Life. Earlier in Chapter 6 Jesus performs the miracle of the mass feeding using just a little bread and fish. Jesus had been out preaching to a crowd and they were hungry, he provided for the physical needs of the people that evening. Jesus then tells us that he not only provides for our physical needs but also all our needs, including our need to be in relationship with the Father and gives us everlasting life. Today we celebrate Corpus Christi which a special day to celebrate the gift that it is to have the Eucharist. We give thanks not only for this special sacrament but also that is points us to the truth that Jesus is the bread of life which can nourish our complex beings. Parents: Today is a great opportunity to speak with you children about Eucharist. Share with your child (ren) some of the reasons you are grateful for the Eucharist. Maybe there was a special time you took communion that stands out for you and you can share that with your child(ren). Ask your child(ren) what they think is occurring at the Eucharist and why it is significant to participate in the meal.

COMMEMORATION Ordination of Henry Budd, First Canadian Native Priest, 1853 June 10 Today we remember Henry Budd, who in 1853 became the first person of the First Nations in Canada to be ordained as an Anglican priest. He was born to a father from the Swampy Cree and a Metis mother, and was named Sa-ka-chu-wes′ cum, which in the Cree language means “Going up the hill.” After his father’s death he was put into the care of an English missionary named John West, who baptized him and gave him the English name “Henry Budd.” Brought up to act like an Englishman, he eventually became a catechist for the Church Missionary Society and began to work among the Cree in northern Rupert’s Land. He proved so effective in teaching the faith and managing his isolated mission that the Society recommended his ordination to the priesthood, which took place in 1853. Budd spent the next fourteen years running a mission in Saskatchewan, then was assigned to The Pas. He possessed a striking presence and was a superb speaker both in English and in his native Cree. But just because he was Cree, the Church Missionary Society allowed him only half the annual stipend that a married white missionary got — even though he supported his own wife and children, his mother, and his brother’s family. But he did not stint his labours in preaching the gospel, or in seeing to the needs of his aboriginal congregations. When he died in 1875, one of his people said that he had not known what it was to lose a father until the death of Mr. Budd. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION Saint Barnabas the Apostle June 11 There were twelve apostles, and then some — some others who never belonged to the original companions of Jesus, but who were also called apostles because they were “sent forth” to proclaim the gospel. Saint Paul was one of these others; so was the man we honour today, the apostle named Barnabas. The Book of Acts says that he was a Jew born in Cyprus, but that he was living in Jerusalem when he joined “the company of those who believed in Jesus.” His real name was Joseph; the apostles called him Barnabas, or “Son of encouragement,” because “he sold a field which belonged to him and laid the proceeds at the apostles’ feet.” By this act Barnabas encouraged the rest of the disciples to provide for the good of the whole community.

According to the Book of Acts, Barnabas was the one who introduced Paul to the twelve apostles. Later on he moved to Antioch and sent for Paul to help him lead the Church in that city. From there Paul and Barnabas set out on a great missionary journey through the cities of Asia Minor and Greece. The two men had a falling-out over Mark, who wanted to abandon the mission. Barnabas returned to Cyprus with Mark, and Paul went his separate way. Paul himself mentioned Barnabas several times in his letters, which suggest that he, not Barnabas, was the senior colleague. Paul also gave a more serious reason for their parting company. It happened at Antioch, when Peter went back on his promise to treat pagan converts as equal with Jewish converts. In the acrimonious debate which followed Barnabas separated from Paul and sided with Peter. We do not know whether Paul and Barnabas were ever reconciled; an ancient tradition testifies only that Barnabas spent the rest of his days preaching in Cyprus.
