Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Saint Benedict’s Rule1 Saint Benedict of Nursia (c.480-543) founded and was the first abbot of the monastic community of Monte Cassino, where he wrote the Rule, which he described as “a little rule for beginners”. Benedict prescribed for his monks a monastic life in community that is essentially the Christian life of the gospel based upon mutual support, obedience, hospitality, tolerance and moderation. Chapter Nineteen: Our Approach to Prayer2 God is present everywhere – present to the good and to the evil as well, so that nothing anyone does escapes his notice;3 that is the firm conviction of our faith. Let us be very sure, however, without a moment’s doubt, that his presence to us is never so strong as while we are celebrating the work of God in the oratory. And so we should always recall at such times the words of the psalm: Serve the Lord with awe and reverence4 and: Sing the Lord’s praises with skill and relish,5 and: I shall sing your praise in the presence of the angels.6 That will make sure that when we sing in choir, there is complete harmony between the thoughts in our mind and the meaning of the words we sing. Chapter Twenty: The Ideal of True Reverence in Prayer7 If in ordinary life we have a favor to ask of someone who has power and authority, we naturally approach that person with due deference and respect. When we come, then, with our requests in prayer before the Lord, who is God of all creation, is it not all the more important that we should approach him in a spirit of real humility and a devotion that is open to him alone and free from distracting thoughts? We must be clear that our prayer will be heard, not because of the eloquence and length of all we have to say, but because of our heartfelt repentance and openness of heart to the Lord whom we approach. Our prayer should, therefore, be free from all other preoccupations and it should normally be short although we may well on occasions be inspired to stay longer in prayer through the gift of God’s grace working within us. Our prayer together in community, on the other hand, should always be moderate in length, and when the sign is given by the superior, all should rise together. 1. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING
Reader

A reading from the Book of Genesis. God said to Noah and to his sons with him, "As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth." God said, "This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all

Show me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. Antiphon Psalm 25:1-4
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of Peter. Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you -not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. 1 Peter 3:18-22

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news." Mark 1:9-15

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY We are called during Lent to a time of renewed prayer. But often we are confused as to why do we pray, and what good does it do anyway. Julian of Norwich describes us humans as being in such a muddle about ourselves and the world we lose sight of who we are and what we are to do in this life. In her writings Julian reminds us that God made our souls to be his dwelling place and we are lost and incomplete without God. St. Augustine put it, “Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu writes, “We are created by God like God but ultimately for God. To worship and adore God. That is what we exist for. That is our purpose in having been created. But now, quite clearly, not all know this thing – that they have been created to love and worship and adore and serve God.”
So why do we pray? To remember who we are. And some of our prayers are for those who have forgotten who they are. Remember the friends who carried the paralyzed man to Jesus for healing?
They dug through the roof and lowered the bed into the room. Jesus healed the man because of the faith of those friends. The man then rose, took up his bed and walked. Jesus also reminded his disciples that they were the salt of the earth. They were not the entire meal but enough to preserve food from going bad. They were the leaven, enough to let the dough to rise. Father Hugh Bishop, who at one time was the superior of the Community of Resurrection said, “You know, it is this Order, and people such as the ones who are educated in and practice the life of prayer who in fact hold the universe together.” We pray because this is what we were created to do and be. We pray to remember who we are and we pray to be the salt and the leaven in the loaf of bread that is this world and this universe. So however you pray, however insufficient you fear your prayers might be, do not doubt that your prayers help to “hold the universe together.”

OUR PARISH TODAY: ANNUAL VESTRY MEETING Sunday, February 22, 2015 Immediately following High Mass. Tea and coffee will be provided. CUSTOMARY ADDRESS The role of deacon is distinct from that of priest or bishop, and so it is not the practice in the Anglican Communion to address a deacon as “Mother” or “Father” as one would a priest or bishop. Therefore, to conform to custom, and having first consulted with her, The Reverend Deacon Joyce Locht would prefer to be addressed as “Joyce.” For those who wish to use a more formal title “Deacon Joyce” would be appropriate.
20 | THE THURIBLE
This change of address does not diminish the role Joyce has as a full and valued member of the clergy team or change her ministry within the Parish or beyond. The many gifts she brings to her work as a deacon will continue to be valued and appreciated by all of us. Fr. Fenton CHINESE NEW YEAR PARADE TODAY A reminder that the Vancouver Chinese New Year Parade is today, Sunday, Feb. 22nd.The parade route starts from East Pender and Taylor Street, heads east on Pender to Gore Ave, turns south on Gore to Keefer Street then turns west on Keefer back towards Andy Livingstone Park for dispersal. Areas including Pender, Gore, Keefer, and Cambie Street will be affected from 9 am until 3 pm. PRAYERS FOR ALL Before he left Fr. Mark asked everyone to “pray for your clergy.” We take great strength and encouragement from your prayers. We, your clergy, want you to know we are praying for each and every one of you weekly. Let us pray for each other and for God to send us an interim priest just right for St. James’. Fr. Matthew, Sr. Mary, Mtr. Joyce, Mtr. Alexis CHILDREN’S LEADERS NEEDED Love children? Want to be a part of an exciting new way to live into the baptismal vow to support and nurture others in their Christian journey? During Lent there will be a children's formation running at the same time as the adult formation, 9:30-10:15 am. We are looking for volunteers to work in teams to help lead the children's formation. For more information connect Jenny Scott at youthworker@stjames.bc.ca FORMATION DURING LENT February 22, March 1, March 8 9:30-10:15 am During the first three weeks of Lent there will be a formation series on contemplative relationships. The premise is that through a posture of listening (first to God and then to others) that we develop stronger relationships with others and be better servants to others. Join us for interactive sessions that will look at
how we can become better listeners to both God and our neighbour. This event is designed to engage youth and adults alike!
prayer is simply having a conversation with God, and sometimes it is just as important to listen as it is to speak.
CHILDREN’S FORMATION February 22, March 1, March 8, March 15 9:30-10:15 am Kid’s Corner at the back of the nave During the first four weeks of Lent there will be formation designed for children ages 2-10. These sessions will help children journey through Lent and prepare for Holy Week.
There is a take-home sheet for parents to help further think through how to pray as a family.
KID’S CORNER VISION: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation.
DURING MASS: It is such a privilege and blessing to be able to worship alongside such a diverse group at St. James' and this especially includes worshipping with all the children. Whether children are in the back or sitting in the pews, we encourage parents to help children find creative ways to engage in what is happening in the service. IN THE BACK: There are activities, books, and quiet toys for younger children. Activities and colouring sheets will coincide with the lectionary and liturgical season. Older children are invited to participate in the activities and return to pews as parents see best. IN THE PEWS: There are pew packs with activities and colouring sheets that coincide with the lectionary and liturgical season. There are also children’s bibles for school-age children available. Please return packs and bibles at the end of the service. THIS WEEK: One way to focus ourselves during the Lenten season is to be more intentional about how we pray, fast and give. Lent may be a perfect time for your family to develop new habits of prayer. This could be done daily at a meal, or as you start or end your day. You may want to pray the Lord’s Prayer, or the Rosary, or follow the ACTS rubric (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication). Remember
Last Sunday there were crafts for the children that could then be used throughout Lent to help the family journey through the season and prepare for Easter. If you missed this and would still like a craft-pack to take home, ask Jenny. COMMEMORATION Philip Lindel Tsen, Bishop of Honan, 1954, and Paul Shinji Sasaki, Bishop of Mid-Japan and Tokyo, 1946 February 24 Paul Sasaki was a bishop of Nippon Sei Ko Kei (a member church of the Anglican Communion), who was persecuted and imprisoned for his support of the independence of his church during the Second World War. Lindel Tsen was the principal leader of Chinese Anglicanism in the middle of the 20th century. Nippon Sei Ko Kei had been established by missionaries from the Episcopal Church in 1859, with support following from the Church of England and the Anglican Church of Canada. Its founding was a turning point in the development of the Anglican Communion, as it was the first church not to be composed primarily of British expatriates. Because of its desire to be a national church devoted to Japan, it found the polity of the Episcopal Church to be an appropriate model. Its first bishops were elected in 1923. Navigating its Christian mission in the Japanese context became more difficult as the Second World War approached and it became clear that Japan would be at war with the West. The Japanese government ordered all Christians into a “united church regardless of differences in doctrine or polity. Roughly one third of the dioceses of Nippon Sei Ko Kei joined the new church, but Bishop Paul Sasaki, Bishop of Tokyo and later Primate, refused and inspired most of the church to stay together and faithful to their Anglican heritage. Sasaki was tortured and imprisoned for his actions, but after the war his witness was an inspiring rallying point for the rebuilding of the church. Many of the dioceses that had departed during the war returned. Lindel Tsen was raised by Episcopal Church missionaries and after his ordination worked closely with Canadian missionaries in China. During the SinoJapanese War he worked to sustain the people of his area and at the end of the war became the leader of the Chinese Anglican Church. Upon his return from the 1948 Lambeth Conference he was put under house arrest by the Communist authorities. Holy Men, Holy Women: Celebrating the Saints, Church Publishing, 2010

COMMEMORATION George Herbert Priest and Poet, 1633 February 27 Today we honour George Herbert, an English priest of the early seventeenth century — and a poet who taught his verse to “rise harmoniously” on the wings of prayer. Born in 1593, he became a young man of brilliant promise, highminded and proud — especially in his religion. He was convinced that God had chosen him for a great purpose, to instruct kings and princes in godly rule. But in a hard inner struggle, in prayers full of lament and anger, Herbert learned to question his ambitions. He came to realize, “Perhaps great places and his praise / Do not so well agree.” At the age of thirty-three he was ordained a deacon; four years later he accepted the rural parish of Bemerton, where he was made a priest and found peace in the service of God and his flock. But his ministry was cut off all too soon, for he died of tuberculosis in early 1633, just short of his fortieth birthday. Herbert left a collection of poems which was later published as The Temple. These poems have nourished the spiritual life of untold generations; several have been set to music, and two have become very popular as hymns — “Let all the world in ev’ry corner sing” and “Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life.” Herbert especially loved to sing about the Eucharist, which he saw as a banquet where the masterful courtesy of Christ bids us sit down and taste his meat, to acquire with Herbert himself “such a heart, whose pulse may be / his praise.” For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994
