Third Sunday of Lent | March 8, 2015 | 10:30 am

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES  To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;  To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;  To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;  To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Saint Benedict’s Rule1:Chapter Seven – The Value of Humility The second step of humility is not to love having our own way nor to delight in our own desires. Instead we should take as our model for imitation the Lord himself when he says: I have come not to indulge my own desires but to do the will of him who sent me.2 Again remember that scripture says: Punishment awaits us for following our own will, but there is a crown of victory for doing what is required of us. The third step of humility is to submit oneself out of love of God to whatever obedience under a superior may require of us; it is the example of the Lord himself that we follow in this way, as we know from Saint Paul’s words: He was made obedient even unto death.3 The fourth step of humility is to get even further that this by readily accepting in patient and silent endurance, without thought of giving up or avoiding the issue, any hard and demanding things that may come our way in the course of that obedience, even if they include harsh impositions which are unjust. We are encouraged to such patience by the words of scripture: Whoever perseveres to the very end will be saved.4 And again there is the saying of the psalm: Be steadfast in your heart and trust in the Lord. 5 Then again there is that verse from another psalm: It is for you we face death all the day long and are counted as sheep for the slaughter. 6 Those who follow in that way have a sure hope of reward from God and they are joyful with Saint Paul’s words on their lips: In all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.7 They remember also the psalm: You, O God, have tested us and have tried us a silver is tried; you led us, God, into the snare; you laid a heavy burden on our backs. 8 Then this is added in the psalm: You place leaders over us9 to show how we should be under a superior. In this way they fulfilled the Lord’s command through patience in spite of adversity and in spite of any wrongs they suffer; struck on one check, they offer the other; when robbed of their coat, they let their cloak go also; pressed to go one mile, they willingly go two;10 with the Apostle Paul they put up with false brethren and shower blessings on those who curse them.11 Saint Benedict’s Rule, Translation and introduction by Patrick Barry, OSB, HiddenSpring, c. 2004. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Exodus.

God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work - you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. Honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour. You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour. PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter. The law of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent. The statutes of the Lord are just and rejoice the heart; the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes. Antiphon The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb. Antiphon Psalm 19:7-10

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart." Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength. 1 Corinthians 1:18-25

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, "Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!" His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me." The Jews then said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?" Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews then said, "This temple has been under construction for fortysix years, and will you raise it up in three days?" But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. John 2:13-22

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Father Hunt has visited St. James’, and he and Allan, his civil partner, are very much looking forward to becoming part of our Parish. 18 | THE THURIBLE

Due to the ongoing discussions regarding the reorganization of the Rectory, Fr. Hunt and Allan will be moving into St. James’ Place when they arrive. Pray for Fr. Hunt as he prepares to leave his community at the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas in Newcastle, England. MOTHERS’ UNION The Mothers’ Union will be meeting Wednesday, March 11, at 7:00 pm in the Bishops’ Room. MOTHERING SUNDAY CELEBRATION The Mothers’ Union members will be distributing carnations to mothers to celebrate Mothering Sunday on March 15. This is following the old English tradition, when those in service in the large ancestral homes like Downton Abbey were allowed to visit their mothers bearing flowers, usually violets, which they collected from the hedgerows. They were sometimes able to take a food donation from the kitchen. We will be also serving simnel cake to all parishioners during Coffee Hour. Simnel cake, a light fruit cake with marzipan in the middle, is also a traditional cake served on Mothering Sunday and Easter. It was often decorated on the top with twelve marzipan balls denoting the twelve apostles. PASSION PLAY As part of our Lenten program, we are presenting a reading performance of Henri Ghéon’s The Way of the Cross, on Passion Sunday, March 22nd, following both Masses, at 9:30 and 12:00. Henri Ghéon (1875-1944) was a French playwright, novelist, poet, and critic, who wrote this play especially for the Benedictine monks of Amay. We follow the translation of 1938 by Dom Thomas Becquet, who writes of the play: “The fourteen Stations of the Cross unfold. Each one is introduced by four lines of verse, spoken by the reciter. And the others, in their turn, play the part of watchers or characters in the Passion. . . . And by their words and gestures they write the story of the Passion.” Leslie Arnovick and Paul Stanwood

ELECTED AT 2015 ANNUAL VESTRY MEETING People’s Warden—Reece Wrightman Associate Warden—Betty Carlson Delegate to Synod and Trustee—Jerry Adams, Leslie Arnovick, Pat McSherry Alternate Delegates to Synod—Sean Birch, Elizabeth Davies, Rhodri Windsor-Liscombe Youth Delegate to Synod—Elisha May Walker Alternate Youth Delegate to Synod—Kael Vincent Parish Council President—Jenny Scott Parish Council Secretary—Tracy Russell The Installation of Officers—those elected, those appointed by the Priest-in-Charge, and the heads of groups and guilds—will take place at High Mass on March 8th. HELP US UPDATE INFORMATION In preparation for the arrival of our interim priest, Fr. Kevin Hunt, we wish to update our parish list. We will be handing out to you a form to fill in and give to one of the clergy or put in the offering basket. We are asking everyone to fill in the form, including long-time parishioners and those who attend occasionally. We ask you to fill in the form if you attend Sunday Mass, a weekday mass, or one of the daily offices. Please fill in the form no matter where you live. This parish list ensures that your clergy pray for you regularly. It determines how many people are elected to go to synod which is the diocesan wide gathering that votes and determines the direction in which our diocese goes. It means you can receive the national and diocesan newspaper to your home. If you are on the parish list it ensures that you receive up-to-date information about your parish of St. James’. It is also a gift to the interim priest, to help him get to know us more quickly. This list is for internal use only and is not given to members or the public. And of course you can fill in only as much of the form as you wish. Thank you for your help in this renewal of our membership list. ROSARY AND STATIONS OF THE CROSS IN LENT During Lent the Rosary will be prayed after noon Mass on Wednesdays. Stations of the Cross will be led on Fridays after the noon Mass. Please consider taking advantage of these special Lenten opportunities for prayer.

EASTER VIGIL BAPTISMS The Great Easter Vigil is the next opportunity for baptisms. Please let one of the clergy or the office know if you or your child or someone you know would like to be baptised. FORMATION DURING LENT February 22, March 1, March 8 9:30-10:15 am During the first three weeks of Lent there will be a formation series on contemplative relationships. The premise is that through a posture of listening (first to God and then to others) that we develop stronger relationships with others and be better servants to others. Join us for interactive sessions that will look at how we can become better listeners to both God and our neighbour. This event is designed to engage youth and adults alike! CHILDREN’S FORMATION February 22, March 1, March 8, March 15 9:30-10:15 am, Kid’s Corner at the back of the nave During the first four weeks of Lent there will be formation designed for children ages 2-10. These sessions will help children journey through Lent and prepare for Holy Week. KID’S CORNER Today’s gospel reading takes place at the temple in Jerusalem. People would make pilgrimage to the temple to be in God’s presence. Jesus comes to the temple and gets so angry at what he sees that he makes a whip and overturns tables, sending temple activities into chaos. Jesus was upset because he saw the system was unfairly taking money from people and preventing them from being able to come and worship God. Jesus was upset because people were not treated well and because they were being hindered from worshipping God. Jesus shows that he is the truest Temple of God and that we can experience God’s presence in and through THE THURIBLE | 19

Jesus. If the risen Jesus is the new temple, and as followers of Jesus we are his body today, then what is the church? Does God reside only in a building or does he reside in each of us? If God resides in each of us, then by showing love to one another we are giving others the chance to be in the presence of God, just as the original temple intended. Discussion questions: 1) Does the fiery anger of Jesus surprise you? Why or why not? Are there times when it is right to express justified anger? Explain. 2) How can I show love for others so they can experience God? Jenny Scott, Youth Worker

LIVING THE RESURRECTION THROUGH ASCETIC STRUGGLE Wed, March 11, 1:15 to 2:15 Room 13 at Regent College (5800 University Blvd.) Christianity has historically affirmed both the goodness of the material order and its orientation towards a higher heavenly reality. One distinctive way in which this commitment has worked itself out is in ascetic monasticism. Parishoner Kevin Greenlee will present Maximus the Confessor as an example of this monastic approach. The presentation will draw from his thesis to show how Maximus understands asceticism as realizing the eschatological hope of the resurrection in the present, affirming thereby both material goodness and heavenly destiny. Presentation will be followed by questions and discussion. Snacks and coffee will be provided. THE THURIBLE | 21

COMMEMORATION St. Gregory Bishop of Nyssa, c. 395 March 9 In the fourth century, a Greek-speaking family in Asia Minor produced a whole clan of saints. One member of this family was Basil the Great, whom we commemorate on January second. Today we commemorate his younger brother Gregory, who became bishop of Nyssa. Gregory did not start out by following in his brother’s footsteps. On the contrary, he seems to have felt oppressed by the sanctity which surrounded him at home and chose to pursue a career as a lawyer and teacher of rhetoric. But in the year 371 his older brother pushed him into becoming the bishop of a small town called Nyssa. Before long Gregory’s enemies trumped up a charge of embezzlement against him, and he fled from his diocese. Their perjury was eventually exposed, and he returned to Nyssa in triumph. In the meantime, he had suffered two bereavements. His brother Basil died, leaving Gregory regretful over the history of their strained relations. Soon afterwards, his older sister Macrina also died. But before her death, while Gregory was nursing her, brother and sister had long conversations about the Christian faith and how Christians should live. These conversations had such an influence upon Gregory that ever afterwards he called Macrina “my teacher.” Gregory came out of these experiences with a new sense of purpose. He took up his pen to continue the theological work which his brother had left unfinished, and he began to emerge as a spiritual teacher in his own right. Gregory lived in a mountainous part of Asia Minor, and he envisaged the Christian’s life with God as if it were a journey up one of these crags. In his view, however, the ascent never ended, because the human movement towards God must be as infinite as the divine goodness which made it possible. This vision, expressed in Greek prose of remarkable beauty, has nourished the spirituality of Eastern Orthodoxy ever since. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION Robert Machray First Primate of Canada, 1904 March 10 Robert Machray became the first primate of the Anglican Church of Canada in 1893, and as we honour his life and service we also commemorate the formation of our Church as a united and independent member in the Anglican communion. Machray was a Scot, born and raised as a Presbyterian. From an early age he showed great talent as a mathematician, and after studies in the university of his native Aberdeen he went south on a scholarship to Cambridge University. It was there that he became an Anglican. Granted a fellowship, then ordained priest, he seemed to be slated for the career of an academic clergyman. But in 1865, much to his surprise, he was chosen to become the second bishop of Rupert’s Land. He arrived at Winnipeg in August of the same year. Machray’s diocese included much of the Arctic as well as the Canadian prairies. He set himself two longrange goals: first, to nurture higher education in Manitoba; and second, to divide Rupert’s Land into smaller diocesan units which would be better able to serve Anglican settlers and carry out missionary work. One of his first acts as bishop was to call a clergy conference, which he patiently developed into a full-fledged synod; in time, as Machray’s wider plans matured, this body became the basis for a provincial synod. Under his leadership, the western synods led the way in calling for unification of the Anglican Church in Canada. This movement bore fruit in 1893, when the first General Synod of our Church met at Toronto. Machray was elected primate at this seminal gathering. He remained primate, as well as archbishop of Rupert’s Land, until his death in 1904. Machray was a tireless worker with a genius for organization; it may be no surprise that he liked to relax by solving mathematical puzzles. But he also possessed a generous heart and was able to work well with a wide variety of people. His vision, integrity, and practical wisdom make him one of the true founders of our Church in this nation. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994
