Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children are encouraged at the beginning of the High Mass to move to the Rectory for Godly Play (a presentation of the Christian story on their level), returning to family for the Peace. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. A Reflection FIVE MARKS OF LOVE: A LENT PROGRAM OF THE SOCIETY OF ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST The Five Marks of Mission of the Anglican Communion are: To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
To teach, baptise and nurture new believers
To respond to human need by loving service
To transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth
Shortly after I left college, I returned to my home parish and was invited almost immediately to become a catechist. Now a catechist is one who teaches, baptizes, and nurtures new Christians, at least preparing them for holy baptism, but also nurturing in the faith as a follow-up. The first rite in the catechumenate, this ancient process for preparation for Baptism, involves the admitting of the catechumen. And it begins with a simple question, “What do you seek?” The response is "Life in Christ." And to underscore what this life in Christ is about, it is immediately followed by the great commandment, what we know as the summary of the law in the version that comes from Chapter 12 of Mark’s gospel. Jesus says, “Hear oh Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and all your strength.” Jesus immediately adds a second commandment, which is like the first, and this one from the Book of Leviticus. “You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. There is no other commandment greater than these." Now I think we’re often faced perhaps with the sense that this great commandment is an imperative, you know, “You shall. You shall. You must, by pulling yourself up by the bootstraps, working, achieve this way of being, and if you don’t, you’ve failed somehow to be a recipient of God’s grace and love.” But I think this is contrary completely to what Jesus was saying. Jesus was speaking of a loving response of God saying to us, “This is my purpose for you. This is my loving intention for you that you may come to love in a mutual relationship me in my fullness. Come to know how you are loved by me and thereby be able to love others.” There is that loving of others that is the teaching, baptizing, and nurturing that we speak about in this mark of love. So we don’t have an imperative anymore, we have instead an invitation to mutual relationship, to fullness of life, to being taught ourselves by God, and being able to impart the good news of that love of out to us for others that they be nurtured and taught themselves. How have you experienced God’s love, and how does that experience inform how you love others? Br. Jonathan Maury, SSJE 4 | HIGH MASS

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Exodus. From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarrelled with Moses, and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?" But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?" So Moses cried out to the Lord, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me." The Lord said to Moses, "Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink." Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarrelled and tested the Lord, saying, "Is the Lord among us or not?" Exodus 17:1-7

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Oh, that to-day you would hearken to his voice! Antiphon Harden not your hearts, as your forebears did in the wilderness, at Meribah, and on that day at Massah, when they tempted me. They put me to the test, though they had seen my works. Antiphon
Forty years long I detested that generation and said, "This people are wayward in their hearts; they do not know my ways." So I swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter into my rest." Antiphon Psalm 95
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person - though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Romans 5:1-11

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?" Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back." The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!" The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem." Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is

called Christ). "When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us." Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking to you." Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, "What do you want?" or, "Why are you speaking with her?" Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, "Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?" They left the city and were on their way to him. Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, eat something." But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about." So the disciples said to one another, "Surely no one has brought him something to eat?" Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, 'Four months more, then comes the harvest'? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you did not labour. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labour." Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I have ever done." So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Saviour of the world." John 4:5-42

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

24| THE LITURGY
The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Accountability is a buzz-word these days. One way or another, in politics and business, in civic and community living, people question, hold one another to account. We see this on a grand scale in the standoff between President Trump and the US Courts, or the current series of protests against oil pipelines. On the individual or small group level we expect each other to conform to norms of mutual respect. In the workplace there is regular review and assessment; voluntary organisations monitor progress on agreed aims and objectives. This challenge and accountability is manifest in the Judaeo-Christian tradition, and God is not exempt. The Old Testament prophets constantly call to account both rulers and the nation, but the Psalmist questions and challenges God, echoed supremely by Jesus in his cry from the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" In Genesis (32.24-30) Jacob struggles and wrestles with God until God reveals Godself: Charles Wesley's
hymn "Come, O thou Traveller unknown" (New English Hymnal 350) is inspired by this story. "Come, O thou Traveller unknown, Whom still I hold, but cannot see; My company before is gone, And I am left alone with thee; With thee all night I mean to stay And wrestle till the break of day."
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
Yes, we have permission to challenge and question God, to struggle in prayer, just as God challenges us, calls us to account. It is often only in and through this struggle that we come to know deepdown with Wesley that God's name is indeed Love. "'Tis Love, 'tis Love! Thou diedst for me, I hear thy whisper in my heart; The morning breaks, the shadows flee, Pure, universal Love thou art. To me, to all, thy mercies move; Thy nature and thy name is Love." Jesus was in Samaria and his disciples had gone off and left Jesus by himself. He was very thirsty. Jesus saw a woman and asked her for a drink. That surprised her because usually men did not talk to women they did not know in those days, so she told him she thought it was unusual. He then told her that if she knew who he really was, she would not hesitate to fetch him a drink and he would have given her "living water" which is kind of like a free ticket to the Kingdom of God. She spoke with Jesus further and then she realized he must be a prophet because he knew a lot about her. Prophets are people that come so close to God, and God comes so close to them, that they know what God is saying and they tell the people what God wants them to hear. After a time, the woman told Jesus that she had heard about a Messiah. Jesus told her that he was
that man! So she went back to her village and told everyone about her visit. Some others came to where the woman had been and tracked Jesus and his disciples down. They asked him to stay and teach them as he had taught the woman, and he did. After that happened, there was a lot more people who believed in Jesus being the son of God.

We will be doing the same thing ahead of the BC provincial election in May. On April 4th, at our Provincial Election Accountability Assembly, we will use the combined power of up to 100 community, labour, faith, and educational organizations to ask the leaders of BC's provincial parties to commit to commonly agreed proposals that will bring much needed change to BC. Bishop Melissa Skelton will be a guest speaker. Agenda: 4:30 PM onward -- food trucks available at the Italian Cultural Center; 6:00 PM -- assembly begins with our cultural program. If you’d like to join other members of the MVA for this exciting night of nonpartisan grassroots democracy please contact Pat McSherry at 604 687 6844 or patmcsherry@telus.net
PWRDF EMERGENCY RESPONSE UPDATE PWRDF is supporting two more appeals to address the humanitarian crisis in East Africa through our memberships in the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and ACT Alliance. To address the famine in South Sudan, PWRDF has made a $20,000 contribution through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to support a project led by ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) Canada. This is further to the contribution in mid-February of $50,000 to the ACT Alliance appeal for South Sudan and Kenya. ADRA Canada is currently working with ADRA South Sudan, who operates a project in the city of Juba that provides Child Friendly Spaces and school supplies to displaced families there. The schools serve porridge every morning to about 100 students, but teachers have noticed an increase in hungry children to about 300. March 14 ACT Alliance announced an appeal to respond to the drought emergency in Somalia and PWRDF has pledged $30,000 to the effort. Somalia’s intense drought is the result of four seasons of inadequate rainfall. This lack of water has devastated crops and livestock, and in the worst affected areas families have no choice but to sell their possessions and borrow food and money to get by. PWRDF’s gift will help ACT Somalia Forum members provide food, water, sanitation, education, health care, cash and livestock to people in need.
