Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The English 20th Century priest-theologian in his book Love’s Endeavour, Love’s Expense writes of the precariousness of love, and insists love can have no guaranteed outcome, and that the love of God is expressed precisely in this risk-filled vulnerability of self-giving - the cross is Love's Endeavour, Love's Expense. Morning glory, starlit sky, soaring music, scholar’s truth, flight of swallows, autumn leaves, memory’s treasure, grace of youth: Open are the gifts of God, gifts of love to mind and sense; hidden is love’s agony, love’s endeavor, love’s expense.

Love that gives, gives ever more, gives with zeal, with eager hands, spares not, keeps not, all outpours, ventures all its all expends. Drained is love in making full, bound in setting others free, poor in making many rich, weak in giving power to be. Therefore he who shows us God helpless hangs upon the tree; and the nails and crown of thorns tell of what God’s love must be. Here is God: no monarch he, throned in easy state to reign; here is God, whose arms of love aching, spent, the world sustain.

372 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Praise to the Holiest in the Height Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise; in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways! O loving wisdom of our God! When all was sin and shame, a second Adam to the fight and to the rescue came. O generous love! that flesh and blood, which did in Adam fail, should strive afresh against the foe, should strive, and should prevail; and that the highest gift of grace should flesh and blood refine: God's presence and his very self, and essence all-divine; who in the garden secretly, and on the cross on high, should teach his followers, and inspire to suffer and to die. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING

Be seated

Reader

A reading from the Book of Jeremiah

Reader Allll

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. Jeremiah 31:31-34 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

How shall a young man cleanse his way? By keeping to your words. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not stray from your commandments. Antiphon I treasure your promise in my heart, that I may not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord; instruct me in your statutes. With my lips will I recite all the judgements of your mouth. Antiphon

I have taken greater delight in the way of your decrees than in all manner of riches. I will meditate on your commandments and give attention to your ways. My delight is in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Antiphon Psalm 119:9-16

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.

Sub-deacon Allll

Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:5-10 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. HIGH MASS | 9

Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say - 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. John 12:20-33 Deacon People

PEACE

Ye that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead the new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and take this holy sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to almighty God. Kneel Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things and judge of all people: We acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we from time to time most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, against thy divine majesty. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him: have mercy upon you; + pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN

Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 187 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — As Royal Banners are Unfurled As royal banners are unfurled, the cross displays its mystery: the Maker of our flesh, in flesh, impaled and hanging helplessly. Already deeply wounded: see his side now riven by a spear, and all our sins are swept away by blood and water flowing here. See everything the prophets wrote fulfilled in its totality, and tell the nations of the world our God is reigning from the tree.

This tree, ablaze with royal light and with the blood-red robe it wears, is hallowed and embellished by the weight of holiness it bears.

Stretched like a balance here, his arms have gauged the price of wickedness; but, hanging here, his love outweighs hell's unforgiving bitterness. The Saviour, victim, sacrifice, is, through his dying, glorified; his life is overcome by death and leaps up, sweeping death aside. We hail the cross, faith's one true hope: God's passion set in time and space, by which our guilt is blotted out, engulfed in such stupendous grace.

SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. For the redemption of the world by the death and passion of our Saviour Christ, both God and Man; who did humble himself, even to the death upon the Cross for us sinners, who lay in darkness and the shadow of death; that he might make us the children of God, and exalt us to everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants with all thy holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. 26 | THE LITURGY

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY “Deepening our Spiritual Life” was the theme of this week’s Clergy Day with Bishop Melissa at the Synod Office. Bishop John Hannen, a familiar face here at St James’, introduced the day, speaking, as he said, on the only thing on which he is an expert, his own experience! He then gave a fascinating reflection on a lifetime’s discipleship and ministry, undergirded by a discipline of daily prayer and connection with God, rooted in the daily celebration of Morning and Evening Prayer, and, where possible, the Eucharist. It was the evident holiness of his parish priest when he was a boy which led Bishop John to explore the calling to ordination himself. He described with humility and humour his first clergy conference as a newly-arrived priest in the diocese of Caledonia: on arrival at the camp after a 500 mile drive, an old “geezer” came up to the car to greet him. The love of God radiated from this man’s face whom he had never met before: “I knew he loved me.” Bishop John asked the then Canon Hambidge who this “geezer” was. “Your bishop” was the reply.

It was good for me to be reminded of the necessity of this rhythm of prayer, which indeed we seek to offer at St James’, to sustain first our relationship with God and then the various ministries and service we offer. Sometimes we can allow ourselves to be so overwhelmed by busy-ness and the distractions of our times that we let the important things slip.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

It was good too to be reminded that it is not just what we say or do which matters, which communicates the love of God; rather it is who we are. For Bishop John it was the holiness of his parish priest, and the love radiant in the face of Bishop Munn. Looking back in my own life there are one or two people who spring to mind who have shown me God’s love in this way. We believe that each of us bears within us the image of God, obscured and tarnished though it often may be. Let us pray for grace to grow in holiness, to become more Christ-like, that we may recognise the Christ in those around us, and that, by grace, others may recognise the Christ in us. Fr Kevin
