Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Saint Benedict’s Rule 1 Saint Benedict of Nursia (c.480-543) founded and was the first abbot of the monastic community of Monte Cassino, where he wrote the Rule, which he described as “a little rule for beginners”. Benedict prescribed for his monks a monastic life in community that is essentially the Christian life of the gospel based upon mutual support, obedience, hospitality, tolerance and moderation. Chapter 7: The Value of Humility (continued) The fifth step of humility is that we should not cover up but humbly confess to our superior or spiritual guide whatever evil thoughts come into our minds and the evil deeds we have done in secret. That is what scripture urges on us when it says: Make known to the Lord the way you have taken and trust in him. 2 Then again it says: Confess to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures for ever. 3 And again: I have made known to you my sin and have not covered over my wrongdoing. I have said: Against myself I shall proclaim my faults to the Lord, and you have forgiven the wickedness of my heart. 4 The sixth step of humility for monks or nuns is to accept without complaint really wretched and inadequate conditions, and then whatever the task they may be ordered to perform, they should think of themselves as poor workers not worthy of consideration, saying quietly to themselves with the psalmist: I am of no account and lack understanding, no better than a beast in your sight. Yet I am always in your presence. 5 The seventh step of humility is that we should be ready to speak of ourselves as of less important and less worthy that others, not as a mere phrase on our lips, but as something we believe in the secret conviction of our hearts. Thus in a spirit of humility we make the psalmist’s words our own: I am no more than a worm with no claim to human dignity, for I am despised by all and cast out by my own people. 6 I was raised up high in honor, but then I was humbled and overwhelmed with confusion. 7 In the end we may learn to say: It was good for me, Lord, that you humbled me so that I might learn your precepts. 8 1 Saint Benedict’s Rule, Translation and introduction by Patrick Barry, OSB, HiddenSpring, c. 2004. 2 Psalm 37.5 3 Psalm 106.1 4 Psalm 32.5 5 Psalm 73.22-23 6 Psalm 22.6 7 Psalm 88.16

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Jeremiah. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. Jeremiah 31:31-34

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Hebrews. Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:5-10

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say - 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. John 12:20-33

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Last Sunday Bishop Melissa spoke at Formation about the Rule of St. Benedict. The amazing thing about this Rule is how it speaks to us today on how to live as Christians. (Some of St. Benedict’s Rule has been appearing in the Reflections on page 4 of this booklet over the last two months.) The Bishop focused on how the basic vows of this rule of life are speaking to lay people all around the world today. The vows are stability, obedience and conversion of life. Bishop Melissa left us with a question arising from each vow. These vows are all connected. Exploring one opens up the meaning and depth and practice of the others. Benedict’s Rule through the last fourteen hundred years draws men and women of all ages to the beauty of one person; Christ Himself. Jesus is at the heart of the Rule.
Obedience is to be understood to be obedience to our baptismal vows. Our task is to discover how we live those vows in our life. Obedience is a way to discover freedom grounded in love. Obedience is ultimately about trust; trust in God. Obedience comes from the Latin word that means to hear; to listen. Through trust in and listening to God, he leads us beyond our own attitudes and perceptions that limit us, to hold open for us a way to grow into spiritual maturity. The spirit of obedience is open, attentive, discreet, prudent and discerning. Question: Who or what do you listen to?
Listening brings us to the third vow; Conversion of Life. When we truly listen to the word of God or to another we are changed and our actions will change because we have a new understanding. The solemn vow of stability calls us Obedience to listening is the to the challenge, support and beginning of conversion as God is accountability in a place where constantly inviting us to deeper people are often quite different personal detachment and selffrom us. We stretch ourselves in our surrender so that we may grow baptismal vows as God leads us into greater freedom to give through the trials and purifications ourselves more completely to God that are part of all conversion. We in whatever he asks. Question: are called to love whoever is there. Where is God on a horizon, Question: Where is God present in beckoning you forward to a new your life now? place?

INTERIM RECTOR Following consultation with the Canonical Committee, Father Kevin Hunt has been appointed by Bishop Skelton to guide St. James’ through a twelve to eighteen-month period of intentional interim ministry, beginning June 1, 2015. Father Hunt is currently the Canon Precentor of the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas in Newcastle, England. Since his training at St. Stephen’s House, Oxford, and his ordination in 1984, he has served in several urban parishes in the Northeast of England. He has been in varied positions of leadership and has experience in Ministry Review. He also has become involved in supporting refugees and those seeking asylum. Father Hunt has visited St. James’, and he and Allan, his civil partner, are very much looking forward to becoming part of our Parish. Due to the ongoing discussions regarding the reorganization of the Rectory, Fr. Hunt and Allan will be moving into St. James’ Place when they arrive. Pray for Fr. Hunt as he prepares to leave his community at the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas in Newcastle, England. HELP US UPDATE INFORMATION In preparation for the arrival of our interim priest, Fr. Kevin Hunt, we wish to update our parish list. We will be handing out to you a form to fill in and give to one of the clergy or put in the offering basket. We are asking everyone to fill in the form, including long-time parishioners and those who attend occasionally. We ask you to fill in the form if you attend Sunday Mass, a weekday mass, or one of the daily offices. Please fill in the form no matter where you live. This parish list ensures that your clergy pray for you regularly. It determines how many people are elected to go to synod which is the diocesan wide gathering that votes and determines the direction in which our diocese goes. It means you can receive the national and diocesan newspaper to your home. If you are on the parish list it ensures that you receive up-to-date information about your parish of St. James’. It is also a gift to the interim priest, to help him get to know us more quickly. This list is for internal use only and is not given to members or the public. And of course you can fill in only as much of the form as you wish.
FELLOWSHIP LUNCH POSTPONED The Fellowship Lunch scheduled for April 19 has been postponed to April 26. It will be hosted by the Mother’s” Union with a full program planned. CHILDREN’S FORMATION Over the past four weeks St. James' has had a successful Children's Formation between the Low and High masses. We are very grateful to the hard work of the four volunteer leaders: AJ Bustin, Anne Kennedy, Peter Symons, and Lynn Wilson. We are currently discerning whether we should continue with Children's Formation during Eastertide. If you are either a parent who is interested in having your child(ren) participate or an adult who would like to help lead, please speak with Jenny Scott. KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. Gospel Reflection: Jesus says in today’s gospel reading, “…unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” Here Jesus is predicting his death but assures those gathered around him that because of it greater things will come. Jesus later says that through this action three things will happen: the ruler of this world will be driven out, Jesus will gather all to himself, and God will be glorified. Parents: direct your children to either the crucifix or some of the images of the Stations of the Cross and share with them the passion. Remind them that next week is Holy Week and we will spend time reflecting on the Passion. Ask them what they understand about Christ’s sacrifice and how that impacts their own lives. Explanation of practice: The Stations of the Cross is an old tradition that originated as an actual pilgrimage through Jerusalem, which would allow individuals to prayerfully retrace the path Jesus took to his crucifixion. Over the years it has evolved and is a spiritual practice for people, even if they cannot travel to Jerusalem. The images on the walls of the
sanctuary and the prayers that accompany them offer guidance as we journey alongside Jesus. At 10 am on Good Friday, April 3, there will be a Stations of the Cross specifically designed for children. All families are encouraged to participate. NEW PARISH LIBRARIAN Lynann Burton has stepped up to replace Tim Firth as the new caretaker of the Holy Faith Library. We thank her for taking on this responsibility, and wish her well with her new duties. FLOWER DEDICATIONS AT EASTER Deadline Sunday, March 22 Easter is fast approaching, the time when we fill the church with beautiful flowers to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. After six weeks of Lent our resources are running on empty, so we will need several dedications to cover our expenses. You will not be able to indicate a particular altar on Easter Sunday, but should you wish to make a donation for flowers please sign up on the chart in the narthex and phone the office with the dedication information and the amount. The deadline for making donations is Sunday, March 22, as the Easter bulletins will be printed the following day. We are planning to put planters on the window ledges and would be most grateful for any small plants gardeners may have in abundance, such as anemones, polyanthus, miniature tulips, heather, forget-me-nots, etc. Spring is early this year so the usual daffodils and primroses may be over by Easter. We would also welcome any greenery you may have such as salal, ivy, and other evergreens. Many thanks for your generosity. The Flower Guild

COMMEMORATION St. Gregory the Illuminator Bishop of Armenia, c.332 March 23 Today we honour Gregory the Illuminator, the Apostle of the Armenians, who illumined his nation with the light of the gospel. In fact, it was through his ministry that Armenia became the first kingdom in the ancient world to make Christianity its official religion. He was born in Armenia in the middle of the third century, but spent his childhood and youth in a neighbouring, Greek-speaking country, where he was raised a Christian. Around the year 280 he returned to Armenia and after many adversities succeeded in converting King Ti-ri-da′-tes, who then gave him every assistance in rooting out paganism and establishing Christianity among the Armenian people. Twenty years or so after the beginning of his mission Gregory was ordained bishop; he spent the next three decades consolidating his work until his death around the year 332. Despite horrible persecutions in this century, when millions of Armenians were done to death by the Turks, the Church that Gregory founded remains strong and vital. Let us therefore give thanks for his life, and for the grace which God gave to him for bringing a whole nation to new birth in Christ. COMMEMORATION
The Annunciation of our Lord Jesus Christ to the Blessed Virgin Mary: Lady Day March 25 The story of the Annunciation is told by Saint Luke, who used it to introduce some major themes in his version of the Gospel. The angel Gabriel visited Mary, greeting her as the one who was favoured by God to be the mother of Jesus, “the Son of the Most High.” It was not Mary’s virtues or merit that won her this favour; it was simply that God “remembered to be gracious” and bestowed such a gift of power on Mary so that the whole human race might know the still greater gift of salvation. Thus empowered, Mary was able to respond, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” By the grace of God which filled her, she was able to practise a graciousness of her own towards God; for it gave her a unique freedom to make God’s will the very thing that she herself willed. In this gracious response to God’s gift, Mary may be seen as a forerunner of Christ himself. For her consent to God’s saving purpose foreshadowed her son’s consent to the fulfillment of that purpose, even at the cost of his own life. To the Annunciation Mary responded, “Be it unto me according to your word.” In a similar way, on the eve of his passion, Jesus prayed to God, “Not my will but yours be done.” The feast of the Annunciation, which celebrates the conception of Jesus, comes to full term on Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter, when we celebrate the birth of the new creation in his paschal victory. All of God’s grace is imparted to our lives so that we might share in this one mystery, not all at once, but through the changes and chances of our daily living. The life of grace often leaves us puzzling, as the message of the angel puzzled Mary; and Scripture suggests that Mary herself did not understand the mystery she had borne until her son was raised from the dead. Her whole life was a discipline in grace for the revelation of glory; and so it may be for all who by Baptism and the Eucharist bear Christ in their own lives.
