A Reflection WE WOULD AS SOON We would as soon you were stable and reliable. We would as soon you were predictable and always the same toward us. We would like to take the hammer of doctrine and take the nails of piety and nail your feet to the floor and have you stay in one place. And then we find you moving, always surprising us, always coming at us from new directions. Always planting us and uprooting us and tearing all things down and making all things new. You are not the God we would have chosen had we done the choosing, but we are your people and you have chosen us in freedom. We pray for the great gift of freedom that we may be free toward you as you are in your world. Amen. 106 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — There’s a Voice in the Wilderness There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod: prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low; make straight all the crooked places, where the Lord our God may go! O Zion, give voice to good tidings, ascend to the heights and sing! Proclaim to a desolate people the coming of their King. The works of pride all perish, like flowers they shall decay; the power and pomp of nations shall pass like a dream away. But your word, O God, is faithful, your arm, O Lord, is strong; you stand in the midst of nations, and you will right the wrong. You will feed your flock like a shepherd, and fold the lambs to your breast; in pastures of peace you’ll lead them, and give to the weary rest.

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, thou didst call John the Baptist to give witness to the coming of thy Son and to prepare his way. Give thy people the wisdom to see thy purpose, and the openness to hear thy will, that we too may witness to Christ's coming and so prepare his way; through thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." A voice says, "Cry out!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever.

Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, "Here is your God!" See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Isaiah 40:1-11

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter. Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him. Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Antiphon Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring up from the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Antiphon The Lord will indeed grant prosperity, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness shall go before him, and peace shall be a pathway for his feet. Antiphon Psalm 85:7-13

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Book of Acts. On the sabbath day Paul and his company went into the synagogue and sat down. After the reading of the law and the prophets, the officials of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, "Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, give it." So Paul stood up and with a gesture began to speak: "You Israelites, and others who fear God, listen. The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. For about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance for about four hundred fifty years. After that he gave them judges until the time of the prophet Samuel. Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years. When he had removed him, he made David their king. In his testimony about him he said, 'I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man after my heart, who will carry out all my wishes.' Of this man's posterity God has brought to Israel a Saviour, Jesus, as he promised; before his coming John had already proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was finishing his work, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but one is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on his feet.' My brothers, you descendants of Abraham's family, and others who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent." Acts 13:14B-26

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon Allll Deacon Allll
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, "No; he is to be called John." They said to her, "None of your relatives has this name." Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. Fear came over all their neighbours, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, "What then will this child become?" For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him. Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty saviour for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel. Luke 1:57-80

Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness, high on his heart he will bear it for thee, comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth thou canst reckon as thine; truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to lay on his shrine. These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear; mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY What does it feel like to come in to church? I’ve heard a few things while we have been trialling “Open Church” between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. “It’s so peaceful in here, I’ve walked past but never been in.” “Wow it’s beautiful in here. Is there a service happening today?” “I’ve always wondered about being baptised. What is that and can I be baptised and confirmed?” These are just a few of the comments and questions that people have made when first entering the church on the Wednesdays we have been open. I see our visitors as gifts from God. This coming Wednesday, June 27, Open Church will go ahead again. I invite you to come and try it out. Our current team of Open Church Ministers consists of about six people. Wednesday the 27th we will be gathering at 2:15 pm after the doors have closed to give thanks and have tea together with cake and sandwiches. We
will be brainstorming what we might include as resources while the church is open. We will be sharing experiences of this ministry and invite you to come and join us to see if this might be a ministry you want to be part of. What would it be like for the church doors to be open a few or every weekday? The people currently involved in this ministry think it would be great. St. James’ has a history of being a central point in the community. When its doors are open, we are there for our neighbours and visitors alike. Welcoming them inside, we hear their stories and have the opportunity to share with them our space and our hospitality.

We remembered the children and teens who attended the schools — including those who never returned home — seeking to honour their qualities of Dignity, Courage, and Resilience. Haida artist Ron Victor LaRochelle contributed a limited edition print of a hummingbird as the symbol of the Feast, and it now hangs below the carved cedar mask in the Narthex. Anglican Video produced a 20-minute documentary film about the Feast including interviews with guests, parishioners and clergy, and it is now available for viewing on the St. James’ website under “Sermons” or here: https://vimeo.com/275418123 (link corrected) FLOWER DEDICATION CHART The new Flower Dedication Chart from July to December 2018 is now in the Narthex underneath the present one. Put your name on the chart now, and when the time comes remember to phone the office with the wording of your dedication. Many thanks, the St. James’ Flower Guild
FINANCIAL UPDATE In world finance, the year so far has seen volatile periods on the stock exchange; inflation, slowly climbing interest rates, and recent trade disputes, remind us the financial realm is everchanging and requires careful attention. The management of our endowment, we're assured by Ross Turnbull at Odlum Brown, is approached in such a way as to minimize the effects of financial storms, focussed as it is on long-term sustainability and balance. To date, all appears well with our investments. The finances of the Parish are in good order, as well. Recent healthy rental revenue offsets, to a degree, the expense of some rather necessary building repairs. Other areas are more or less within the budget so far. We greatly appreciate the support of our parishioners, through their regular giving, and that of friends of St. James whose funding of projects and initiatives both sustain us and aid in our growth. Reading the numbers of our monthly financial reports, one forms an idea of the many people at work behind the scenes. Attached to line items there are stories of people working together, committed to carrying out the many facets of the ministry and mission of St. James; we're grateful for their labours, and for God's help and guidance in all we do.
