High Mass

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost | August 4, 2013 | 10:30 am

Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES •To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Evening Prayer

Blessed Sacrament Chapel

For the past number of Sundays we have been showing on the cover of the Mass booklet things at St. James’ that you don’t normally see. In front of the Tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel is a white veil. However, underneath is a copper door that locks the Tabernacle. On the front of your Mass booklet today is a picture of this door another of the ‘hidden treasures’ of St. James’.

This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Discarded copies will be recycled. 2 | HIGH MASS

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection orthodoxy (Gk., orthos doxa, “right praise,” “right belief”), a pattern of belief and worship that is consistent with the fundamental teachings of the Church. Orthodoxy is the opposite of heresy. The term is also used of Eastern churches (Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox) that acknowledge the honorary primary of Constantinople, but are not in union with Rome. Although the word “orthodoxy” does not appear in the NT, concern for sound doctrine and right belief was evident already therein (Rom 16:17; 1 Cor 11:2, 28; 15:1-3; Tim 1:10; 6:3-4; Tim 4:3; Titus 1:9; 2:1). In the early centuries orthodox faith was expressed in creeds, especially the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the so-called Athanasian Creed. Other criteria of the orthodoxy include an appeal to the concensus of the Fathers of the Church and to the universally held beliefs of the Church down through the centuries as embodied in the formula attributed to Vincent of Lérins: “that which has been believed everywhere, always, and by everyone.” Solemns conciliar and papal teachings are yet another source of orthodox belief. The main practical criterion of orthodoxy, however, is the liturgy: lex orandi, lex credendi (Lat., “the rule of prayer is the rule of belief”). Indeed, the Greek word for orthodoxy itself can mean either “right praise” or “right belief.” The word is often used today as a polemical term by ultraconservative Catholics to describe the body of teachings they recall from their own preVatican II catechetical formation. By contrast, the council used the word only once (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, n. 66).

orthopraxy (Gk., orthos praxis, “right balance”), a pattern of Christian behaviour that is consistent with the practice of Jesus and the spirit of the gospel. The term grew out of liberation theology in Latin America and political theology in Europe during the 1960s and the 1970s. It complements orthodoxy as practice complements belief and as doing complements knowing. –The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism, 1995, p. 945.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Hosea. When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals, and offering incense to idols. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them. They shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me. The sword rages in their cities, it consumes their oracle-priests, and devours because of their schemes. My people are bent on turning away from me. To the Most High they call, but he does not raise them up at all. How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I

again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath. They shall go after the Lord, who roars like a lion; when he roars, his children shall come trembling from the west. They shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the Lord. Hosea 11:1-11

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, and his mercy endures for ever. Let all those whom the Lord has redeemed proclaim that he redeemed them from the hand of the foe. Antiphon For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. Whoever is wise will ponder these things, and consider well the mercies of the Lord. Antiphon Psalm 107:1-2, 9, 43

THE EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Colossians So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those HIGH MASS | 9

who are disobedient. These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things - anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all! Colossians 3:1-11

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me." But he said to him, "Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?" And he said to them, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions." Then he told them a 10 | HIGH MASS

parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, 'What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' Then he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God." Luke 12:13-21

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Please either pick up a copy in the Narthex, or ask the Parish Office for a copy (hard or soft – Word doc.). This is a summary of emerging recommendations from the ongoing 'consultation interviews' between the Rector and parishioners, and from ongoing conversations with the Parish leadership (Trustees / Collegium / Heads of Guilds and Ministries). Please remember: this is a draft document which will be revised numerous times as the Parish Review continues to unfold. The purpose of this document is to track the emergence of ‘commendable’ recommendations for prayer and deliberation by the Parish as interpreted by Fr. Mark. My invitation to the Parish is that by Advent Sunday the fruit of the Parish Review will be

a distillation of actionable recommendations (goals) to further God’s work in our midst as described through our Parish Vision and Mission. Please speak to me, or any one of the Trustees or Clergy, if you would like to comment upon, and contribute to, the Parish Review recommendations. INVITATION TO YOUTH

August 2013 Over the past couple of months we have been slipping in our envelope giving – and now, as of June 30, 2013, we are $6,242 behind on our budgeted amount. And please remember - it’s that time of the year. Unfortunately, the expenses of running the church don’t ever take a vacation. We still have to pay the hydro and gas bills, the salaries and benefits and all the ongoing expenses of maintaining the ministries and buildings of our beloved parish. Please don’t let your envelopegiving take a holiday! Angela Van Luven PS. Statements to June 30/12 are available from the office (or see them on the bulletin board).

I would like to invite any of our Youth at St. James' for a chat over coffee and muffins with the leaders of the Youthworks Mission on: Wednesday, August 7, 9:30 am, at the Rectory. We would like to discuss what our Youth would like to see happen at St James' as we plan for the future and to learn from the experience of the Youthworks leaders. Please share this invitation with our young people. If you can let me know who will be coming that will help with the muffin order. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope to see you then and look forward to hearing from you. Fr. Mark

CHANGES TO MASS TIMES

RIP ROBERT GAUTHIER

Due to recent changes in the provision of clergy at St. James’ it has become necessary to make some revisions to our Mass schedule. With regret, the Vigil Mass (5:30 p.m. Saturdays) will be permanently suspended due to poor attendance and increasing demands upon the clergy. Mass on Tuesdays will be moved to 9:30 a.m. in the Lady Chapel, for the same reasons. These changes will be effective from July 1st. I am thankful to the Wardens and the Clergy for their counsel on this matter. If you have any queries on this topic please speak directly to me, or the Wardens. Fr. Mark

Many of you will remember Bob Gauthier, former parishioner and Warden. Bob, who had been living in Mexico for the past several years, died on Tuesday, July 9th at home with his family in Sudbury, ON. A Requiem for Bob will be held at St. James’ on Friday, August 16th at 11:00am with a reception to follow.

RIP PENNY EHMANN We recently received the news that Penny Ehmann died on Sunday, June 30th. Penny was very grateful for the support of the St. James’ Pastoral Care Guild over the past few years. A Requiem for Penny will take place on Tuesday, August 13th at 11:00am, in the Lady Chapel, with a reception to follow.
