The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A Reflection Some people tell me that they are scandalized because they see many things wrong in the Church. I tell them that if you ask a fly, “Are there any flowers in this area?” it will say, “I don’t know about flowers, but over there in that heap of rubbish where you can find all the filth you want.” And it will go on to list all the unclean things it has been to.
Now, if you ask a honeybee, “Have you seen any unclean things in this area?” it will reply, “Unclean things? No, I have not seen any; the place here is full of the most fragrant flowers.” And it will go on to name all the flowers of the garden or the meadow. You see, the fly only knows where the unclean things are, while the honeybee knows where the beautiful iris or hyacinth is. As I have come to understand, some people resemble the honeybee and some resemble the fly. Those who resemble the fly seek to find evil in every circumstance and are preoccupied with it; they see no good anywhere. But those who resemble the honeybee only see the good in everything they see. The foolish person thinks foolishly and takes everything in the wrong way, whereas the person who has good thoughts, no matter what he sees, no matter what you tell him, maintains a positive and good thought. + St. Paisios of Mt. EPISTLE READING Reader
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people." (When it says, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY In early July I was fortunate to be able to attend the International Conference of the Society of Catholic Priests in Canterbury, England. I was thankful for the opportunity to meet with fellow priests from across the Anglican Communion to share together in worship, in celebrating the joys and reflecting on the burdens of ministry, and in listening to one another’s hopes and aspirations. The North American contingent was small, so I found myself as an English priest of the Anglican Church of Canada assisting two Episcopalian priests at Mass on 4 July! It was good that the conference was based around the daily life of prayer at Canterbury Cathedral, a place of pilgrimage over many centuries and the mother church of our Communion, where we were welcomed warmly and generously by the Dean and Chapter. Being immersed in that daily rhythm of prayer and praise, and in that sense of continuity with countless pilgrims down the ages, was the highlight for me.
This, together with lectures by the Dean and by Fr. George Guiver, CR, lately Superior of the Community of the Resurrection at Mirfield, reinforced for me how essential is our regular recitation of the Daily Office here at St. James’. The regular round of Morning and Evening Prayer, together with the Mass, is the heartbeat which gives us life, keeps going all else that we seek to do, in service of God and neighbour. We are all indebted to the small but faithful group which exercises this ministry on our behalf, and for our neighbourhood. We are glad that Sister Jeannie-Lynne has recently come over from the Island to join this group. OUR PARISH CHAPEL WALKWAY Due to ongoing renovations the chapel walkway will be closed for the next two weeks, including the weekends of August 4 & 5 and August 11 & 12. RECTORY RENOVATION: UPDATE The work on the Rectory commenced in June. The interior demolition is now complete and the rebuilding of the interior space has begun. The Project Manager, Nancy Holme, along with Scott Construction is pleased with the work to date. They have identified some minor anomalies but quickly found solutions which will better suit the use of the kitchen in particular. The Renovation Committee endorsed these minor changes. With the removal of the walls of the original cloakroom, the foyer space is much larger and brighter and will create a welcoming entrance for the community. To date there has been no interruption to church activities. We thank Nancy Holme and Scott Construction for their efficient and careful work.
