High Mass
Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost | August 11, 2013 | 10:30 am
Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES •To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The cross is the abyss of wonders, the centre of desires, the school of virtues, the house of wisdom, the throne of love, the theatre of joys, and the place of sorrows. It is the root of happiness, and the gate of heaven. Of all the things in heaven and earth it is the most peculiar. It is the most exalted of all objects. It is an ensign lifted up for all nations; to it shall the Gentiles seek. Its rest shall be glorious; the dispersed of Judah shall be gathered together to it from the four corners of the earth. If love be the weight of the soul, and its object the centre, all eyes and hearts may convert and turn unto this object, cleave unto this centre, and by it enter into rest. There might we see all nations assembled with their eyes and hearts upon it. There we may see God’s goodness, wisdom, and power, yea, his mercy and anger displayed. There we may see man’s sin and infinite value, his hope and fear, his misery and happiness. There we might see the rock of ages and the joys of heaven. There we may see a man loving all the world, and a God dying for mankind. There we may see all types and ceremonies, figures and prophecies, and all nations adoring a malefactor – an innocent malefactor, yet the greatest in the world. There we may see the most distant things in eternity united, all mysteries at once couched together and explained. The only reason why this glorious object is so publicly admired by churches and kingdoms, and so little thought of by particular men, is because it is truly the most glorious. It is the root of comforts and the fountain of joys. It is the only supreme and sovereign spectacle in all worlds. It is a well of life beneath in which we may see the face of heaven above, and the only mirror wherein all things appear in their proper colours; that is, sprinkled in the blood of our Lord and Saviour. The cross of Christ is the Jacob’s ladder by which we ascend into the highest heavens. There we see joyful patriarchs, expectant saints, prophets ministering, apostles publishing, and doctors teaching, all nations concentering, and angels praising. That cross is a tree set on fire with invisible flame that illuminateth all the world. The flame is love: the love in his bosom who died on it, in the light of which we see how to possess all the things in heaven and earth after his similitude. Thomas Traherne, Centuries of Meditations, I, 58-60. Thomas Traherne (c. 1636-1674) was a priest, private chaplain to the Lord Keeper of the Seals of Charles II, and a Metaphysical poet. His poems were discovered and published in the twentieth century, and he became known as an Anglican Divine, whose poetry celebrates the glories of creation.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Isaiah. The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah! What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. When you come to appear before me, who asked this from your hand? Trample my courts no more; bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and calling of convocation - I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity. Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. When you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
Our God will come and will not keep silence; before him there is a consuming flame, and round about him a raging storm. He calls the heavens and the earth from above to witness the judgement of his people. Antiphon "Gather before me my loyal followers, those who have made a covenant with me and sealed it with sacrifice. Whoever offers me the sacrifice of thanksgiving honours me; but to those who keep in my way will I show the salvation of God." Antiphon Psalm 50:3-5, 24
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he HIGH MASS | 9
received power of procreation, even though he was too old and Sarah herself was barren because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, "as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore." All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Jesus said, "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour." Luke 12:32-40

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS
Please speak to me, or any one of the Trustees or Clergy, if you would like to comment upon, and contribute to, the Parish Review recommendations. With ongoing appreciation for all the support and goodwill of our Parish leadership and the ready participation by parishioners. Fr. Mark.
The office will be open: Thursday, August 15; Friday, August 16, then regular hours resume.
ORDER OF THE DIOCESE OF NEW
Fr. Mark will be on leave August 9th – 31st. During this time Mtr. Alexis Saunders will serve as “acting rector” and coordinate the work of Collegium with the Wardens and the Office. We give thanks for her special ministry among us during the month August.
WESTMINSTER PARISH REVIEW UPDATE (4) “Draft recommendations for discussion” is now available as a four page document for your prayerful review and deliberation. Please either pick up a copy in the Narthex, or ask the Parish Office for a copy (hard or soft – Word doc.). This is a summary of emerging recommendations from the ongoing 'consultation interviews' between the Rector and parishioners, and from ongoing conversations with the Parish leadership (Trustees / Collegium / Heads of Guilds and Ministries). Please remember: this is a draft document which will be revised numerous times as the Parish Review continues to unfold. The purpose of this document is to track the emergence of ‘commendable’ recommendations for prayer and deliberation by the Parish as interpreted by Fr. Mark. My invitation to the Parish is that by Advent Sunday the fruit of the Parish Review will be a distillation of actionable recommendations (goals) to further God’s work in our midst as described through our Parish Vision and Mission.
Congratulations to three of our parishioners who will receive this special award later this year. This award is given annually to recipients who have served the parish or the Diocese in an outstanding manner, without remuneration, for at least 10 years. This year's parish nomination for the many years he had served in various capacities is Paul Stanwood. The Bishop has nominated two of our parishioners, Celia Dodds and Judy Graves for their outstanding service in the parish and in the Diocese. Congratulations, Paul, Celia and Judy ! The insignia of the Order will be presented to the recipients by Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, on Sunday November 10, 2013 at 4:00pm at Christ Church Cathedral.

We recently received the news that Penny Ehmann died on Sunday, June 30th. Penny was very grateful for the support of the St. James’ Pastoral Care Guild over the past few years. A Requiem for Penny will take place on Tuesday, August 13th at 11:00am, in the Lady Chapel, with a reception to follow.

TREASURER’S CORNER August 2013 Over the past couple of months we have been slipping in our envelope giving – and now, as of June 30, 2013, we are $6,242 behind on our budgeted amount. And please remember - it’s that time of the year. Unfortunately, the expenses of running the church don’t ever take a vacation. We still have to pay the hydro and gas bills, the salaries and benefits and all the ongoing expenses of maintaining the ministries and buildings of our beloved parish. Please don’t let your envelope-giving take a holiday! Angela Van Luven PS. Statements to June 30/12 are available from the office (or see them on the bulletin board). CHANGES TO MASS TIMES Due to recent changes in the provision of clergy at St. James’ it has become necessary to make some revisions to our Mass schedule. With regret, the Vigil Mass (5:30 p.m. Saturdays) will be permanently suspended due to poor attendance and increasing demands upon the clergy. Mass on Tuesdays will be moved to 9:30 a.m. in the Lady Chapel, for the same reasons. These changes will be effective from July 1st. I am thankful to the Wardens and the Clergy for their counsel on this matter. If you have any queries on this topic please speak directly to me, or the Wardens. Fr. Mark
