Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Never be satisfied with what is imperfect yet also realise God is patient with us. Let progress and development be of such a sort that all can keep pace, and never refuse to set out together when in obedience to the gospel the community travels on to a new future. Make the effort of listening to the other and of understanding him. Give your opinion when it is useful without false humility or assertiveness. Speak in such a way that you can still hear what the other is saying, and that he will still be ready to hear you. Whether you speak or keep silent let it proceed from the peace of the Lord. Take no vengeance, not even in thought. Avoid every tendency to depression and sadness— it is death to your soul. Look for the light in all things and all people. Your night will be made radiant by numberless stars till the moment when the Sun of Justice rises in your heart, and that morning begins which knows no ending. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the First Book of Kings. Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. He said, "O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart, the covenant that you kept for your servant my father David as you declared to him; you promised with your mouth and have this day fulfilled with your hand. Therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, keep for your servant my father David that which you promised him, saying, 'There shall never fail you a successor before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children look to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.' Therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you promised to your servant my father David. But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built! Regard your servant's prayer and his plea, O Lord my God, heeding the cry and the prayer that your servant prays to you today; that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you said, 'My name shall be there,' that you may heed the prayer that your servant

prays toward this place. Hear the plea of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place; O hear in heaven your dwelling place; heed and forgive. Likewise when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a distant land because of your name - for they shall hear of your great name, your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm - when a foreigner comes and prays toward this house, then hear in heaven your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and so that they may know that your name has been invoked on this house that I have built." 1 Kings 8:(1, 6, 10-11) 22-30, 41-43 Reader Allll
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Antiphon Happy are they who dwell in your house! they will always be praising you. Happy are the people whose strength is in you! whose hearts are set on the pilgrims' way. Antiphon Psalm 84:1-4 EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand HIGH MASS | 9
therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak. Ephesians 6:10-20 Sub-deacon Allll

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever." He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, "This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?" But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, "Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It

is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father." Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, "Do you also wish to go away?" Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." John 6:56-69 The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Silence has always had a significant place in the Christian life of prayer, as a space in which to listen and wait upon God. In the Gospels Jesus makes time to be alone and still before his Father. Remember Elijah's encounter with God in 1 Kings 19: "Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking Reflecting on this I'm reminded of a rocks in pieces before the Lord, haunting song from my childhood, but the Lord was not in the wind; Simon & Garfunkel's 1964 hit "The and after the wind an earthquake, Sound of Silence". Even then there but the Lord was not in the seemed to be some apprehension earthquake; and after the surrounding Silence. Are we afraid earthquake a fire, but the Lord of what might be disclosed to us in was not in the fire; and after the Silence? fire a sound of sheer silence." The Lord revealed himself in the "And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more silence. People talking without speaking Try to find some time this week to People hearing without listening be still, to be silent. You may care People writing songs that voices to light a candle by an icon or a never share crucifix. Breathe slowly and And no one dared calmly, still and focus yourself on Disturb the sound of silence God. Repeat slowly the Jesus Silence seems to be a rare commodity these days. There is always something in the background: at home, the TV or music; on transit or in the street, earphones or video games. We often seek something to distract ourselves, to keep the silence at bay. I wonder why.
"Fools", said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words, like silent raindrops fell And echoed In the wells of silence."
Prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner"), or a simple Bible verse, eg "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy Name" (Psalm 103.1). If cares and concerns come to the fore, do not worry, hand them over, set them aside for the time being. Listen, rest, abide in God's love. Fr. Kevin

God’s protective gear! From our second reading, from Paul's Letter to the Ephesians, “Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13 (NIV) Imagine you've just been given your first skateboard and you are wondering what to do with it. You've seen the skateboarders at the park and on TV, and you have seen all of the cool things they can do, but how do you get started? First, before you try anything crazy, you need to get comfortable just standing on your board. It is best to start out on the grass or some carpet so that the board will not roll until you get the hang of it. After you get comfortable just standing on the board, you are ready to try some skating. Oh wait! We have forgotten something. Can you guess what it is? That's right! We need to make sure we have the right protective gear.
The first thing is to make sure you have the right kind of shoes. You wouldn't go skating in a pair of cowboy boots, would you? Your shoes should have a flat bottom to help you get a better grip on the board. Next, every skateboarder should wear a helmet. You might think that wearing a helmet makes you look stupid, but, believe me, it is the smart thing to do. Another thing you will need is pads. It is important to have pads to protect your elbows and knees. It might also be a good idea to wear braces on your wrists. Now that you have all the right gear, it is time to go skateboarding. Even professional skateboarders make sure they have the right protective equipment. Doesn't it make sense that you should use it too? Just as we need protective gear in skateboarding, the Bible teaches us that we need protection in life. The Bible calls it the armour of God and it tells us that we need the armour of God to keep us free from harm and close to Jesus. What kind of protection does the Bible say that we need?
The belt of truth – we can never fail if we will hold on to the truth that Jesus Christ is Lord The breastplate of righteousness – to help us choose to do what God says is right Feet fitted with the gospel of peace - knowing Jesus brings peace The shield of faith - seeds of doubt can never take root if we have faith in Jesus The helmet of salvation - Jesus came from heaven to earth to bring us home to him The sword of the Spirit - the Bible, the Word of the Lord, points us to Jesus, the Way, the Truth, the Life.
No skateboarder should ever get on his board without the proper equipment, and you should never try to go through life without the armour of God.

COMMEMORATION Saint Bartholomew the Apostle August 24 Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles, mentioned sixth in the three Gospel lists, and seventh in the list of Acts. The name Bartholomaios means “son of Talmai”, which was an ancient Hebrew name. It shows, at least, that Bartholomew was of Hebrew descent. Outside the instances referred to, no other mention of the name occurs in the New Testament. Nothing further is known of him for certain. Many scholars, however, identify him with Nathaniel. The reasons for this are that Bartholomew is not the proper name of the Apostle; that the name never occurs in the Fourth Gospel, while Nathaniel is not mentioned in the first three; that Bartholomew’s name is coupled with Philip’s in the lists of Matthew and Luke, and found next to it in Mark, which agrees well with the fact shown by St. John that Philip was an old friend of Nathaniel’s and brought him to Jesus; that the call of Nathaniel, mentioned with the call of several Apostles, seems to mark him for the apostolate, especially since the rather full and beautiful narrative leads one to expect some important development; that Nathaniel was of Galilee where Jesus found most, if not all, of the Twelve; and finally, that on the occasion of the appearance of the risen Savior on the shore of the Sea of Tiberias, Nathaniel is found present, together with several Apostles who are named and two unnamed Disciples who were, almost certainly, likewise Apostles and so, presumably, he was one of the Twelve.
Other traditions represent St. Bartholomew as preaching in Mesopotamia, Persia, Egypt, Armenia, Lycaonia, Phrygia, and on the shores of the Black Sea; one legend, it is interesting to note, identifies him with Nathaniel. The manner of his death, said to have occurred at Albanopolis in Armenia, is equally uncertain; according to some, he was beheaded, according to others, flayed alive and crucified, head downward, by order of Astyages, for having converted his brother, Polymius, King of Armenia. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02313c.htm

COMMEMORATION The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist August 29 The Gospel according to Mark tells us that John the Baptist was thrown into prison because he had offended King Herod and his wife Herodias. No harm came to him until Herodias exploited a frivolous vow which the King made during a banquet; and then to preserve his own honour Herod ordered John to be beheaded. In Mark’s account this story is designed to present a stark contrast: while Herod feasted with his friends in wanton luxury, John languished in prison because of his steadfast witness to the word and justice of God. And though Herod knew that John was a holy and righteous man, and even heard him gladly, yet he condemned the prophet to death rather than dishonour a drunken vow. Like the voices of the proud quoted in the ancient Psalm, Herod could say, “With our tongue will we prevail; / our lips are our own; who is lord over us?” But the Psalm also foresaw a day when the voices of the proud would be stopped by the justice of God: “Because the needy are oppressed, and the poor cry out in misery, I will rise up,” says the Lord, “and give them the help they long for.”
So it was that Mark set the story of John’s death in the context of what Jesus was doing — how he was fulfilling the prophecy of John not only by preaching the gospel of repentance but also by deeds which revealed the power and righteousness of God. When Herod learned of all these things, he was seized with anxiety. Having misused his power to behead John, he now knew that John was vindicated — and heard the death-knell of his own sovereignty — in the life and mission of Jesus of Nazareth.
