Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection In the Christian community thankfulness is just what it is anywhere else in the Christian life. Only they who give thanks for little things receive the big things. We prevent God from giving us the great spiritual gifts he has in store for us, because we do not give thanks for daily gifts. We think we dare not be satisfied with the small measure of spiritual knowledge, experience, and love that has been given to us, and that we must constantly be looking forward eagerly for the highest good. Then we deplore the fact that we lack the deep certainty, the strong faith, and the rich experience that God has given to others, and we consider this lament to be pious. We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet really not small) gifts. How can God entrust great things to one who will not thankfully receive from him the little things? If we do not give thanks daily for the Christian fellowship in which we have been placed, even where there is no great experience, no discoverable riches, but much weakness, small faith, and difficulty; if, on the contrary, we only keep complaining to God that everything is so paltry and petty, so far from what we expected, then we hinder God from letting our fellowship grow according to the measure and riches which are there for us all in Jesus Christ. Christian community is like the Christian’s sanctification. It is a gift of God which we cannot claim. Only God knows the real state of our fellowship, of our sanctification. What may appear weak and trifling to us may appear great and glorious to God. Just as Christians should not be constantly feeling their spiritual pulse, so, too, the Christian community has not been given to us by God for us to be constantly taking its temperature. The more thankfully we daily receive what is given to us, the more surely and steadily will fellowship increase and grow from day to day as God pleases. Christian brotherhood is not an ideal which we must realize: it is rather a reality created by God in Christ in which we may participate. The more clearly we learn to recognize that the ground and strength and promise of all our fellowship is in Jesus Christ alone, the more serenely shall we think of our fellowship and pray and hope for it. – a reading from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together, ET from the fifth edition (1949) by John W. Doberstein, London, 1954; pp. 17-18 (abridged).

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Exodus. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbour in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every

firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgements: I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. Exodus 12:1-14

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in his maker; let the children of Zion be joyful in their king. Antiphon Let them praise his name in the dance; let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people and adorns the poor with victory. Antiphon Psalm 149:1-4

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet"; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, "Love your neighbour as yourself." Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Romans 13:8-14 HIGH MASS | 9

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Jesus said, "If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES “Why is there division among orthodox Christians who profess the same creeds?” A parishioner once asked me. [The Gospel this week addresses how church members can be reconciled one to another. - Mt. 18.15-20] The answer is simple: as Christians we haven’t yet learnt how to disagree well. The problem is not that we disagree. The problem is that we disagree poorly. The Holy Cross [we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Cross next Sunday] is both the instrument and the sign of our interdependence in Jesus Christ. In the Cross, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has given us one to another. In belonging to Christ we belong one to another. It doesn’t matter, indeed it shouldn’t matter, whether we like, dislike, or are indifferent, towards our fellow Christians. What we feel about one another isn’t as important as the Truth that we belong one to another in Jesus.

So it should be no surprise that Jesus taught his disciples: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” (Luke 6:27-28.) And Jesus himself prayed: “May they all

be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” (John 17:21.) To do a better job of disagreeing one with another we must begin with the Cross of Christ and recognize that Christ has given us to each other. How can we be in communion together? There are three watchwords for us to practise: curiosity, humility and generosity. When we practice this threefold way: we more fully belong to each other; we grow into that unity for which Christ himself prayed; and, the Gospel is proclaimed that all might believe in Jesus Christ. “Very often the deepest wounds we experience will come from other Christians. I find that the things which most hurt me come from other Christians. How we begin reconciliation is what Jesus did. We take up our cross, we bear the pains of other people’s hurt expressed at us and we give love in return and it’s very tough. We can only do that when we do it together.” Archbishop Justin Welby in conversation with Nicky Gumbel, 5/17/13.

COMMEMORATION The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary September 8

A legend dating from the second century tells this story about the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Once upon a time there was a Jewish couple named Jo′-a-chim and Anne. They were elderly, and their neighbours reproached them for not having any children. But God heard Anne’s laments and sent an angel to tell her: “You shall conceive and bear, and your offspring shall be spoken of in all the world.” Anne responded: “As the Lord my God lives, if I bear a child, whether male or female, I will bring it as a gift to the Lord my God, and it shall serve him all the days of its life.” And so it came to pass that Anne conceived; and when the time was fulfilled, she gave birth to a daughter and named her Mary. Both parents vowed to dedicate their child to the service of God, and when she was three years old they presented her in the temple at Jerusalem. “And the high priest placed Mary on the third step of the altar, and the Lord God put grace upon the child, and she danced for joy with her feet, and the whole house of Israel loved her.” Such is the legend of the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and we continue to tell the story because it bears witness to a deeper truth of faith — that Mary herself was the daughter of Israel’s hope and the child whose own offspring would fulfill the longing of the whole family of creation. COMMEMORATION Edmund James Peck Missionary to the Inuit, 1924 September 10

Today we honour the memory of Edmund James Peck, an Anglican priest who died in 1924 after almost forty years in the eastern Arctic serving the Inuit and helping them to know Christ. Peck started life in the workers’ tenements of Manchester and entered the Royal Navy while he was still a child. He planned to make the Navy his life, but a series of near-fatal illnesses and shipboard accidents led him to experience what he called “the movements of grace.” His experience of Christ made him decide to give his life to spreading the word of eternal life, and in 1876 he volunteered for work in the Canadian Arctic. His first post was at Little Whale River on Hudson’s Bay, where he spent seven years before being sent further north to minister to the Inuit around Fort Chimo. He then opened a mission on Baffin Island, where he laboured — as he put it, “itinerated” — among the Inuit until his retirement in 1921. He died at Toronto, on this very date, three years later. Peck was as handy with wood, bolts, and iron as he was with the New Testament and the Prayer Book, and he built the Anglican Church in the eastern Arctic not only spiritually by his preaching but also physically with his own hands. The Inuit were impressed by Peck’s readiness for hard work and still more by his honest interest in their culture and conditions — but still the reason for his presence often puzzled them. He obviously had no goods to trade, so they wondered what he was doing at the trading posts. Early in his career at Little Whale River he overheard one Inuit give this explanation to another: “Him? Oh, he fell down from heaven to save the Innu. “Peck laughed at the thought that he had come from heaven — but he gave his whole life to make the rest of the saying come true.
