High Mass

Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost | August 25, 2013 | 10:30 am

Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES •To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may wish to remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books just in front of the piano. We also have nursery care for children under 5 and Sunday School for older children. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available by request every Sunday. Either speak to a priest or have one of the greeters find one for you. This Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi HIGH MASS | 3

A Reflection The kingdom of God comes to a particular person when he repents and believes the gospel; when he is taught of God, not only to know himself, but to know Jesus Christ and him crucified. As ‘this is eternal life, to know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he had sent’; so it is the kingdom of God begun below, set up in a believer’s heart. The Lord God Omnipotent reigns when he is known through Christ Jesus. He takes unto himself his mighty power that he may subdue all things unto himself. He goes on in the soul conquering and to conquer, till he has put all things under his feet, till every thought is brought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. For this we pray; but we also pray for the coming of God’s everlasting kingdom, the kingdom of glory in heaven which is the continuation and perfection of the kingdom of grace on earth. Consequently, our prayer is offered for the whole intelligent creation who are all interested in this grand event, the final renovation of all things, by God’s putting an end to misery and sin, to infirmity and death, taking all things into his own hands and setting up the kingdom which endures through all ages. We ourselves can claim nothing of right, but only of free mercy. We deserve not the air we breathe, the earth that bears, or the sun that shines upon us. All our desert, we own, is hell. But God loves us freely; therefore, we ask him to give what we can no more procure for ourselves, than we can merit it at his hands. Not that either the goodness or the power of God is a reason for us to stand idle. It is his will that we should use all diligence in all things, that we should employ our utmost endeavours, as much as if our success were the natural effect of our wisdom and strength. And then, as though we had done nothing, we are to depend on him, the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Thus when we pray ‘Give us this day our daily bread’, we are to take no thought for the morrow. For this very end has our wise Creator divided life into these little portions of time, so clearly separated from each other that we might look in every day as a fresh gift from God, another life, which we may devote to his glory; and that every evening may be as the close of life, beyond which we are to see nothing but eternity. John Wesley, Sermon on the Mount VI.

John Wesley, (1703-1791) was born in Lincolnshire to an Anglican clergyman and Puritan mother. After a religious experience in 1738, he began an itinerant ministry which led after his death to the development of a world-wide Methodist Church. His spirituality involved affirmation of grace, frequent communion, and a corporate search for holiness. His open-air preaching, concern for education and for the poor, liturgical revision, organization of local societies and training of preachers provided a firm basis for Christian growth and mission in England. . 4 | HIGH MASS

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Jeremiah Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations." Then I said, "Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy." But the Lord said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a boy'; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord." Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, "Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant." Jeremiah 1:4-10

In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be ashamed. In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; incline your ear to me and save me. Antiphon Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; you are my crag and my stronghold. I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother's womb you have been my strength; my praise shall be always of you. Antiphon Psalm 71:1-3, 6

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them. (For they could not endure the order that was given, "If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death." Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I tremble with fear.") But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. See that you do not refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the one who warns from heaven! At that time his voice shook the earth; but now he has promised, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven." This phrase, "Yet once more," indicates the HIGH MASS | 9

removal of what is shaken - that is, created things - so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:18-29

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over 10 | HIGH MASS

and said, "Woman, you are set free from your ailment." When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day." But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?" When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing. Luke 13:10-17

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. ORDER OF THE DIOCESE OF NEW

WESTMINSTER

PARISH REVIEW UPDATE (4) “Draft recommendations for discussion” is now available as a four page document for your prayerful review and deliberation. Please either pick up a copy in the Narthex, or ask the Parish Office for a copy (hard or soft – Word doc.). This is a summary of emerging recommendations from the ongoing 'consultation interviews' between the Rector and parishioners, and from ongoing conversations with the Parish leadership (Trustees / Collegium / Heads of Guilds and Ministries). Please remember: this is a draft document which will be revised numerous times as the Parish Review continues to unfold. The purpose of this document is to track the emergence of ‘commendable’ recommendations for prayer and deliberation by the Parish as interpreted by Fr. Mark. My invitation to the Parish is that by Advent Sunday the fruit of the Parish Review will be a distillation of actionable recommendations (goals) to further God’s work in our midst as described through our Parish Vision and Mission. Please speak to me, or any one of the Trustees or Clergy, if you would like to comment upon, and contribute to, the Parish Review recommendations. With ongoing appreciation for all the support and goodwill of our Parish leadership and the ready participation by parishioners. Fr. Mark. 24 | HIGH MASS

Congratulations to three of our parishioners who will receive this special award later this year. This award is given annually to recipients who have served the parish or the Diocese in an outstanding manner, without remuneration, for at least 10 years. This year's parish nomination for the many years he had served in various capacities is Paul Stanwood. The Bishop has nominated two of our parishioners, Celia Dodds and Judy Graves for their outstanding service in the parish and in the Diocese. Congratulations, Paul, Celia and Judy ! The insignia of the Order will be presented to the recipients by Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, on Sunday November 10, 2013 at 4:00pm at Christ Church Cathedral. ST. JAMES’ CHOIR WANTS YOU! Do you love to sing? Do you have at least a basic ability to read music and some experience of singing in a choir? If so, the Guild of St. Cecilia, otherwise known as the St. James' Choir, wants you! We sing some of the best choral music ever written, in the context for which it was written – the liturgy. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Gerald Harder, Organist & Choirmaster, at: musicdirector@stjames.bc.ca or at 604-809-5531.

PAX CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:

August 2013

Michaelmas 2013

Over the past couple of months we have been slipping in our envelope giving – and now, as of June 30, 2013, we are $6,242 behind on our budgeted amount. And please remember - it’s that time of the year. Unfortunately, the expenses of running the church don’t ever take a vacation. We still have to pay the hydro and gas bills, the salaries and benefits and all the ongoing expenses of maintaining the ministries and buildings of our beloved parish. Please don’t let your envelope-giving take a holiday! Angela Van Luven PS. Statements to June 30/12 are available from the office (or see them on the bulletin board).

We give thanks for all parishioners' submissions and financial contributions to the ongoing ministry of PAX this year. In light of the ongoing Parish review this fall, we invite you to consider three more "R" words as the theme of our Michaelmas issue: Reflect, Reconcile, Respond. Have there been times in your life or faith journey that you have wanted to reflect, reconcile, or respond, and where has this led you? In Mother Alexis' words from a recent sermon, "How has this nourished you beyond what you could imagine?" We encourage submissions related to any of these three "R" words; two possible directions include a focus on the sacrament of reconciliation, or a reflection in anticipation of the national Truth and Reconciliation events coming up in September. The submission deadline is Monday, September 9th. All submissions (maximum 500 words for written pieces) can be emailed to tracylee.russell@gmail.com or left in the PAX mail slot outside the office.

CHANGES TO MASS TIMES Due to recent changes in the provision of clergy at St. James’ it has become necessary to make some revisions to our Mass schedule. With regret, the Vigil Mass (5:30 p.m. Saturdays) will be permanently suspended due to poor attendance and increasing demands upon the clergy. Mass on Tuesdays will be moved to 9:30 a.m. in the Lady Chapel, for the same reasons. These changes will be effective from July 1st. I am thankful to the Wardens and the Clergy for their counsel on this matter. If you have any queries on this topic please speak directly to me, or the Wardens. Fr. Mark

PAX – THE PILGRIMAGE ISSUE Many of you will have noticed the significance of the attractive cover of the most recent issue of PAX. The figure on horseback is probably Chaucer himself, one of the Canterbury pilgrims. The illustration is reproduced from one of the pages of the Ellesmere Manuscript, hand written and illuminated, one of the best and earliest versions of The Canterbury Tales, produced shortly after Chaucer’s death in 1400. This unique manuscript is in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Paul Stanwood, for the Pax Editorial Team HIGH MASS | 25
