High Mass

Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost | September 1, 2013 | 10:30 am

Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES •To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Love is the greatest thing that God can give us, for himself is love, and it is the greatest thing we can give to God, for it will also give our selves and carry with it all that is ours. The Apostle calls it the band of perfection; it is the Old, and it is the New, and it is the great Commandement, and it is all the Commandements, for it is the fulfilling of the Law. It does the work of all other graces without any instrument but its own immediate vertue. For as the love to sinne makes a Man sinne against all his own reason, and all the discourses of wisdom, and all the advices of his friends, and without temptation, and without opportunity: so does the love of God, it makes a man chaste without the laborious arts of fasting and exteriour disciplines, temperate in the midst of feasts, and is active enough to choose it without any intermedial appetites, and reaches at Glory thorough the very heart of Grace, without any other arms but those of Love. It is a grace that loves God for himself, and our Neighbours for God. The consideration of God’s goodness and bounty, the experience of those profitable and excellent emanations from him, may be, and most commonly are the first motive of our love: but when we are once entered, and have tasted the goodnesse of God, we love the spring for its own excellency, passing from passion to reason, from thanking to adoring, from sence to spirit, from considering our selves, to an union with God: and this is the image and little representation of Heaven; it is beatitude in picture, or rather the infancy and beginnings of glory. We need no incentives by way of special enumeration to move us to the love of God, for we cannot love any thing for any reason real or imaginary, but that excellency is infinitely more eminent in God. There can but two things create love, Perfection and Usefulnesse: to which answer on our part, first admiration, and 2. Desire: and both these are centred in love. For the entertainment of the first, there is in God an infinite nature, immensity or vastnesse without extension or limit, Immutability, Eternity, Omnipotence, Omniscience, Holinesse, Dominion, Providence, Bounty, Mercy, Justice, Perfection in himself, and the end to which all things and all actions must be directed, and will at last arrive… But for the entertainment of the second we may consider that in him is a torrent of pleasure for the voluptuous, he is the fountain of honour for the ambitious, an inexhaustible treasure for the covetous: our vices are in love with phantastick pleasures and images of perfection, which are truely and really to be found no where but in God. And therefore our vertues have such proper objects, that it is but reasonable they should all turn into love: for certain it is that this love will turn all into vertue. For in the scrutinies for righteousnesse and judgement, when it is inquired whether such a person be a good man or no, the meaning is not, what does he believe, or what does he hope, but what he loves? Jeremy Taylor, “Of Charity, or the love of God.” Holy Living (1650), edited by P. G. Stanwood, 1989. pp. 186-188 .

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

8 | HIGH MASS

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Jeremiah Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? They did not say, "Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?" I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, "Where is the Lord?" Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit. Therefore once more I accuse you, says the Lord, and I accuse your children's children. Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has ever been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water. Jeremiah 2:4-13

Reader Alll

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and said, "Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it." And yet my people did not hear my voice, and Israel would not obey me. So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their hearts, to follow their own devices. Antiphon Oh, that my people would listen to me! that Israel would walk in my ways! I should soon subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes. But Israel would I feed with the finest wheat and satisfy him with honey from the rock. Antiphon Psalm 81:10-14, 16

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." So we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?" Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16 HIGH MASS | 9

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honour, he told them a parable. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, 'Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a 10 | HIGH MASS

dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." Luke 14:1, 7-14

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. With regret, the Vigil Mass (5:30 p.m. Saturdays) has been permanently suspended due to poor attendance and increasing demands upon the clergy. Mass on Tuesdays has been moved to 9:30 a.m. in the Lady Chapel, for the same reasons. I am thankful to the Wardens and the Clergy for their counsel on this matter. We give thanks for all parishioners' submissions and financial contributions to the ongoing ministry of PAX this year. In light of the ongoing Parish review this fall, we invite you to consider three more "R" words as the theme of our Michaelmas issue: Reflect, Reconcile, Respond. Have there been times in your life or faith journey that you have wanted to reflect, reconcile, or respond, and where has this led you? In Mother Alexis' words from a recent sermon, "How has this nourished you beyond what you could imagine?" We encourage submissions related to any of these three "R" words; two possible directions include a focus on the sacrament of reconciliation, or a reflection in anticipation of the

All submissions (maximum 500 words for written pieces) can be emailed to tracylee.russell@gmail.com or left in the PAX mail slot outside the office.
