Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES  To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;  To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;  To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;  To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish;

To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 8:30 am Low Mass, Lady Chapel 9:15 am Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 10:30 am High Mass, Church 12:00 pm Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 5:00 pm Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel ______________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Do you have a ministry here? The short answer to that question is yes you have! God calls us because he loves us. As Christians, we are all called by virtue of our baptism to be in Christ: to grow into ever closer union with him and to live out our lives in response to his life, death and resurrection. For each of us that involves living in a particular way and becoming a particular kind of person: someone who reflects something of the life of Christ. That is our primary calling: to represent Christ in the world. As one of the great spiritual writers put it: Christ has no body now on earth but ours, No hands but ours, no feet but ours; Ours are the eyes through which to look out Christ’s compassion to the world Ours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good, And ours are the hands with which he is to bless men and women now. St Teresa of Avila (1515–82) This is our common calling as Christians. At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand.

HYMN 1 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee: holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though our sinful human gaze thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy. So now, Israel, give heed to the statutes and ordinances that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it, but keep the commandments of the Lord your God with which I am charging you. You must observe them diligently, for this will show your wisdom and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!’ For what other great nation has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is whenever we call to him? And what other great nation has statutes and ordinances as just as this entire law that I am setting before you today? But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children’s children. Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? who may abide upon your holy hill? Whoever leads a blameless life and does what is right, who speaks the truth from his heart. Antiphon There is no guile upon his tongue; he does no evil to his friend; he does not heap contempt upon his neighbour. In his sight the wicked is rejected, but he honours those who fear the Lord. Antiphon

EPISTLE READING

Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of James. Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfilment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures. You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God's righteousness. Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act - they will be blessed in their doing. If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. James 1:17-27

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?" He said to them, "Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.' You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition." Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person." Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight, and fair the twinkling, starry host: Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer than all the angels heaven can boast. All fairest beauty, heavenly and earthly, wondrously, Jesus, is found in thee; none can be nearer, fairer, or dearer than thou, my Saviour, art to me.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY This week I had the chance to walk around the Clergy House with Nancy our Project Manager. The space is gutted through and some of the rooms have started to take shape. Mechanical and electrical pipes and wires hang from the ceiling and the old and the new lie side by side, beckoning the viewer to imagine the possibilities. Despite there being a lot of work left to do, I found myself imagining, the study groups, meetings, events that could take place in the space when it is finished. Who will we be welcoming to St. James’ once our offices have an accessible street front presence?

thinking about our shared ministry into the Fall and leading up to Christmas. Yes as always I have already begun to torture Fr. Kevin with the exact number of days until Christmas.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

Information will be coming shortly about Fall ministry opportunities and times to gather for studying scripture. Keep your eye out for that! During Advent we will be doing a book study with Bishop Stephen Cottrell’s book Walking Backwards to Christmas. The books arrived at the office today and suggested donation will be announced nearer the time.

I was disappointed when Nancy told me that a fireman’s pole from my office to the kitchen was not a possibility, but hey, in time, and given enough counselling, I am sure I will get over it.

There is lots going on, and I hope to be able to share with you more about the Open Church Ministry and what part St. James’ will play in the Heart of the City Festival over the next couple of weeks.

Exiting back onto Cordova, there was the bustle of a film crew, greetings from some of our neighbours and a renewed sense of activity and excitement as we come into September and start

Bye for now, Mother Lucy
