Sung Mass

Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost | September 6, 2015 | 10:30 am

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES  To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;  To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;  To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;  To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Church 8:30 am Low Mass, Church 10:30 am Sung Mass, Church 12:00 am Coffee Hour, Parish Hall 5:00 pm Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel ______________________________________________________________________ . Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection Have great respect for the seniors in the community. Don’t distress them by your talk or behaviour. Be gentle towards their weakness and incapacities— you are building on what they began. Everybody must have a head, every circle a centre. Joyfully, then, accept the person who fulfills this special service. More than anyone else he needs your support and mercy. Let him be for you as a presence of the Lord, not because of his human qualities and leadership, but for the sake of his special calling and grace. Everything in your life can have love as its motive, its end. The vows by which you bind yourself are precisely your own way of embodying your love for God and man. The more you grow in love, the more clearly you will understand what the vows demand: and the more seriously you live your vows, the more you will grow in love. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Proverbs. A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favour is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor have this in common: the Lord is the maker of them all. Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of anger will fail. Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor. Do not rob the poor because they are poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate; for the Lord pleads their cause and despoils of life those who despoil them. Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever. The hills stand about Jerusalem; so does the Lord stand round about his people, from this time forth for evermore. Antiphon The sceptre of the wicked shall not hold sway over the land allotted to the just, so that the just shall not put their hands to evil. Show your goodness, O Lord, to those who are good and to those who are true of heart. As for those who turn aside to crooked ways, the Lord will lead them away with the evildoers; but peace be upon Israel. Antiphon Psalm 125

EPISTLE READING Reader

A reading from the Letter of James. My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favouritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, "Have a seat here, please," while to the one who is poor you say, "Stand there," or, "Sit at my feet," have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? You do well if you really fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself." But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. For the one who said, "You shall not commit adultery," also said, "You shall not murder." Now if you do not commit adultery but if you murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of HIGH MASS | 9

liberty. For judgement will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgement. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill," and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. James 2:1-17 Reader Allll

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, "Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." But she answered him, "Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." Then he said to her, "For saying that, you may go the demon has left your daughter." So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. Then he returned from the

region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened." And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, "He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak." Mark 7:24-37 The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

We must be careful not to show favouritism in our church. We are all God's children whether we are rich, poor, red, brown, yellow, black, or white. Playing Favourites From our second reading, The Letter of James, chapter 2, verses 1,8-9

My brothers and sisters, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favouritism.... If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbour as yourself," you are doing right. But if you show favouritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. Look around the people in church this morning, quietly. See how they come in all shapes and sizes and colours and how some may have strange-sounding names. Some are old and some are young. Some are pretty sharp and some may be a little dull. Some are dressed in very nice clothes while others may wear clothing that is a little soiled and worn. James, another of the disciples of Jesus but maybe not our St James, wrote in the Bible that the followers of Jesus should not show favouritism. He said, "My friends, if you have faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, you won't treat some people better than others. Suppose a rich person wearing fancy clothes and a gold ring comes to one of your meetings. And suppose a poor person dressed in worn-out clothes also comes. You must not give the best seat to the one in fancy clothes and tell the one who is poor to stand at the side or sit on the floor. That is the same as saying that some people are better than others. If you treat some

FROM THE ARCHBISHOP VOTE: AN ANGLICAN APPROACH FOR ELECTION 2015 From the Primate, Archbishop Fred Hiltz Anglicans approach life in the world through a faith that is based on scripture, tradition, and reason. Time and again, God calls us through Holy Scripture and ancient and modern prophets to build a society based on justice and righteousness, a kingdom of compassion and justice. Anglican tradition is one of “walking with others,” learning about and respecting other beliefs and faiths. Anglican long-standing commitment to reason helps us hold opposing views in creative tension, finding the common good through prayerful discernment. Compassion and justice, tempered by reason, form the basis for three broad sub-themes for the coming federal election, designed to respond to the Gospel call: • To respond to human need by loving service; • To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation; and • To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the Earth. Bridging Divides We live in a country of abundance, yet not all benefit. 18 | THE THURIBLE 30

Among the most vulnerable are the many who are homeless or living in precarious or unaffordable housing, children living in poverty with little hope for a brighter future, and young people who are underemployed and increasingly alienated from the political process. Their voice is not heard and their needs are not reflected adequately in election platforms. A compassionate and just society cares for the most vulnerable. Governments need to be encouraged to pursue concerted and collaborative approaches to bridge these divides—to end homelessness, to eliminate child poverty, and to give hope to future generations. Restoring Right Relations We live in a country that believes in democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. And yet, we find ourselves facing major challenges—in our relations with the First Peoples of this land, our care and responsibility for the environment, and the balance of rights and freedoms with safety and security in a diverse society. Responding to these challenges requires new conversations between government and people. Promoting Peace and Stability We live in a country that is an active member within a global system of relationships, including the privileged G7 group of countries. Canada’s voice can make a difference in promoting peace and stability and the growth and prosperity of our world. Words, however, have greater effect when they are matched with action. As partners with government, we encourage greater generosity in our international assistance, greater commitment and streamlined processes to welcome refugees, and continued efforts to find a meaningful approach to peace in the Middle East. COMMEMORATION The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary September 8

A legend dating from the second century tells this story about the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Once upon a time there was a Jewish couple named Jo′-a-chim and Anne. They were elderly, and their neighbours reproached them for not having any children. But God heard Anne’s laments and sent an angel to tell her: “You shall conceive and bear, and your offspring shall be spoken of in all the world.” Anne responded: “As the Lord my God lives, if I bear a child, whether male or female, I will bring it as a gift to the Lord my God, and it shall serve him all the days of its life.”

And so it came to pass that Anne conceived; and when the time was fulfilled, she gave birth to a daughter and named her Mary. Both parents vowed to dedicate their child to the service of God, and when she was three years old they presented her in the temple at Jerusalem. “And the high priest placed Mary on the third step of the altar, and the Lord God put grace upon the child, and she danced for joy with her feet, and the whole house of Israel loved her.” Such is the legend of the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and we continue to tell the story because it bears witness to a deeper truth of faith — that Mary herself was the daughter of Israel’s hope and the child whose own offspring would fulfill the longing of the whole family of creation. COMMEMORATION Edmund James Peck Missionary to the Inuit, 1924 September 10

Today we honour the memory of Edmund James Peck, an Anglican priest who died in 1924 after almost forty years in the eastern Arctic serving the Inuit and helping them to know Christ. Peck started life in the workers’ tenements of Manchester and entered the Royal Navy while he was still a child. He planned to make the Navy his life, but a series of near-fatal illnesses and shipboard accidents led him to experience what he called “the movements of grace.” His experience of Christ made him decide to give his life to spreading the word of eternal life, and in 1876 he volunteered for work in the Canadian Arctic.

His first post was at Little Whale River on Hudson’s Bay, where he spent seven years before being sent further north to minister to the Inuit around Fort Chimo. He then opened a mission on Baffin Island, where he laboured — as he put it, “itinerated” — among the Inuit until his retirement in 1921. He died at Toronto, on this very date, three years later. Peck was as handy with wood, bolts, and iron as he was with the New Testament and the Prayer Book, and he built the Anglican Church in the eastern Arctic not only spiritually by his preaching but also physically with his own hands. The Inuit were impressed by Peck’s readiness for hard work and still more by his honest interest in their culture and conditions — but still the reason for his presence often puzzled them. He obviously had no goods to trade, so they wondered what he was doing at the trading posts. Early in his career at Little Whale River he overheard one Inuit give this explanation to another: “Him? Oh, he fell down from heaven to save the Innu.” Peck laughed at the thought that he had come from heaven — but he gave his whole life to make the rest of the saying come true.
