Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection "We need to be a risk-taking church". It is natural for churches to grow…Church growth is natural and what we can expect and we should be optimistic about the power of the Spirit to bring people to Christ. But it is also very hard work…It’s about “take up your cross and follow me”. There’s one certain way of renewing the fire of the Holy Spirit within one…prolonged fasting and prayer. We need to be a risk-taking church. There is no safety in Christ, there's absolute security but there is no safety - and we have to make a big difference between knowing that we are in his arms and knowing that he calls us to do risky things. So the vision is about being a risk-taking Church and finding ways of liberating people to be risk-takers, in the service of Christ. If Jesus isn’t at the centre of the Church we are simply Rotary with a pointy roof. It’s not who we are that matters, it’s who Jesus is that matters. It’s all grace. Jesus prays that we may be united so that the world may know. Reconciliation within the Church is how the world will know that Jesus is truly God. That’s what he says, that’s not what we say. We cannot live for our cause to win. We have to live for Jesus’ cause to win. Very often the deepest wounds we experience will come from other Christians. I find that the things which most hurt me come from other Christians. How we begin reconciliation is what Jesus did. We take up our cross, we bear the pains of other people’s hurt expressed at us and we give love in return and it’s very tough. We can only do that when we do it together. It’s the seeking of people who are being transformed by the Spirit and in whom the Spirit fights against anger and bitterness. Excerpts from: The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, in conversation with Nicky Gumbel. May 17, 2013. Search YouTube - "We need to be a risk-taking church".

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Jeremiah. The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: "Come, go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words." So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was working at his wheel. The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to him. Then the word of the Lord came to me: Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the Lord. Just like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. At one moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, but if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will change my mind about the disaster that I intended to bring on it. And at another moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, but if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will change my mind about the good that I had intended to do to it. Now, therefore, say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Thus says the Lord: Look, I am a potter shaping evil against you and devising a plan against you. Turn now, all of you from your evil way, and amend your ways and your doings. Jeremiah 18:1-11

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting places and are acquainted with all my ways. Antiphon Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, but you, O Lord, know it altogether. You press upon me behind and before and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain to it. Antiphon For you yourself created my inmost parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will thank you because I am marvellously made; your works are wonderful and I know it well. Antiphon My body was not hidden from you, while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book, they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. Antiphon How deep I find your thoughts, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. Antiphon Psalm 139.1-5, 12-17

in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother. For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love - and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me. I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I wanted to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during my imprisonment for the gospel; but I preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced. Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even your own self. Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do more than I say. Philemon 1-21

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Now large crowds were travelling with Jesus; and he turned and said to them, "Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions." Luke 14:25-33

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

PARISH REVIEW UPDATE (4) “Draft recommendations for discussion” is now available as a four page document for your prayerful review and deliberation. Please either pick up a copy in the Narthex, or ask the Parish Office for a copy (hard or soft – Word doc.). This is a summary of emerging recommendations from the ongoing 'consultation interviews' between the Rector and parishioners, and from ongoing conversations with the Parish leadership (Trustees / Collegium / Heads of Guilds and Ministries). Please remember: this is a draft document which will be revised numerous times as the Parish Review continues to unfold. The purpose of this document is to track the emergence of ‘commendable’ recommendations for prayer and deliberation by the Parish as interpreted by Fr. Mark. My invitation to the Parish is that by Advent Sunday the fruit of the Parish Review will be a distillation of actionable recommendations (goals) to further God’s work in our midst as described through our Parish Vision and Mission. Please speak to me, or any one of the Trustees or Clergy, if you would like to comment upon, and contribute to, the Parish Review recommendations. With ongoing appreciation for all the support and goodwill of our Parish leadership and the ready participation by parishioners. Fr. Mark. PAX CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Michaelmas 2013 We give thanks for all parishioners' submissions and financial contributions to the ongoing ministry of PAX this year. In light of the ongoing Parish review this fall, we invite you to consider three more "R" words as the theme of our Michaelmas issue: Reflect, Reconcile, Respond. Have there been times in your life or faith journey that you have wanted to reflect, reconcile, or respond, and where has this led you? In Mother Alexis' words from a recent sermon, "How has this nourished you beyond what you could imagine?" We encourage submissions related to any of these three "R" words; two possible directions include a focus on the sacrament of reconciliation, or a reflection in anticipation of the national Truth and Reconciliation events coming up in September. The submission deadline is Monday, September 9th. All submissions (maximum 500 words for written pieces) can be emailed to tracylee.russell@gmail.com or left in the PAX mail slot outside the office.
