High Mass
Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost | September 18, 2016 | 10:30 am
Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES • To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; • To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 8:30 am Low Mass, Lady Chapel 9:30 am Coffee Hour, Rectory 10:30 am High Mass, Church 12:00 am Coffee Hour, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 5:00 pm Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel _____________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Jubila Deo Let me sing unto the Lord, sing praises joyfully unto the Most High: sing to the Lord of all the earth, sing to the Lord of the whole heavens, sing a new song unto the Lord my God. Never will I cease to sing praises unto my God: sing with words and without words, sing in the daytime and in the dark, sing with my understanding and with my heart, rehearse with my whole being my song, All my fresh springs shall be in thee, O Lord. -Rehearse it with the choirs of heaven and with their joy. From the eternal let it ring through the transiencies of every day. To the eternal let it leap from thee and to thee, O my God! THOU, O Father almighty, art my song; THOU, O Son my Saviour, thou its theme; THOU, O Spirit of Love, its stream and melody. O Holy, Blessed, and Glorious Trinity, lift my praises to the heavenly choirs even now; and always. From My God, my Glory, by Eric Milner-White, sometime Dean of York

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Amos. Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, saying, ‘When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practise deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat.’ The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
Give praise, you servants of the Lord; praise the Name of the Lord. Let the Name of the Lord be blessed, from this time forth for evermore. Antiphon Who is like the Lord our God, who sits enthroned on high, but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth? He takes up the weak out of the dust and lifts up the poor from the ashes. He sets them with the princes, with the princes of his people. Antiphon Psalm 113:1-2, 5-7
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to Timothy. First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all - this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-7

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Then Jesus said to the disciples, "There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, 'What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.' Then the manager said to himself, 'What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.' So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?' He answered, 'A hundred jugs of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.' Then he asked another, 'And how much do you owe?' He replied, 'A hundred containers of wheat.' He said to him, 'Take your bill and make it eighty.' And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth." Luke 16:1-13

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

THANK YOU After 50 years of serving at the altar, Paul Stanwood has decided to retire from this ministry. We are grateful to him for his long and dedicated service in this way, and especially latterly for co-ordinating the Sunday Low Mass serving team. Fr. Kevin CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS It is good to welcome the Choir back for the new term. Thanks to three generous donations, which the Trustees have agreed to match from funds dedicated to the provision of music, it is intended to offer up to 4 Choral Scholarships during the coming year, to assist in sustaining and strengthening the Choir. We are very grateful to the donors. This will be reviewed in due course, when further donations may be invited to continue the project. Fr. Kevin HOSPITALITY Our Sunday after Mass Coffee Hours are well attended and a great time for fellowship. We are pleased to serve fair trade coffee, tea and sugar. Growing these items in warmer climates than Canada’s is very labour intensive. Those of you who have visited coffee, sugar and tea plantations on your travels have witnessed this.
JAM JARS NEEDED The Women’s Guild is busy making preserves for your enjoyment. More jars are needed - 250 ml/ 8 oz or smaller. Contributions may be left on the table at the back of the Parish Hall. Thank you.
Our buying fair traded items is a social justice action. We continue to buy Cafe Justicia because we have a personal connection with the coop in Guatemala where it is grown - the money goes directly to the co-op. Their beans are ground and bagged at East Van Roasters on Carrall St., a social justice enterprise that employs DTES residents.
BOOK YOUR SPACES NOW If your group or guild meets regularly throughout the year, please get in touch with the office as soon as possible to reserve your meeting space from now through to next June. Thank you.

COMMEMORATION John Coleridge Patteson, Bishop & Companions, Martyrs, 1871 September 20 John Coleridge Patteson was the first bishop of Melanesia, a vast chain of islands in the South Pacific, where he was martyred in 1871. He had left England and a comfortable curacy sixteen years earlier in order to help Bishop Selwyn in New Zealand. He was assigned to work among the island peoples of Melanesia, where he quickly learned some twenty-three of their many different languages and dialects. He believed that the Melanesians might benefit by learning certain skills from European civilization, but he was entirely free of the veiled racism which spoke of “the white man’s burden” — in his eyes, the natives of Melanesia were the equals of any European. After he became bishop in 1861 he acted on this conviction by labouring to build up an indigenous ministry. He also campaigned to end the virtual enslavement of Melanesian labourers by Englishmen from Australia and Fiji. While on a routine visitation of his vast diocese in September, 1871, Patteson anchored off Nakapu, one of the Santa Cruz islands where, a few months earlier, five of the inhabitants had been murdered by some Anglo-Australian raiders. Unaware of this atrocity, the bishop crossed the reef and was rowed ashore by the islanders. Soon afterwards his companions were showered with arrows as they waited in a boat just beyond the reef. Three of them were wounded: an English priest named Joseph Atkin and two Melanesians, John Ngongono and Stephen Taroaniara. A couple of hours passed, then a canoe floated out from the shore, containing the bishop’s mangled corpse. A few days later, Atkin and Taroaniara died of tetanus. When the people of Nakapu learned that they had murdered a man who sought to defend them against their oppressors, they sought to be reconciled with his soul by receiving from his successor the gospel which he had tried to bring them. So, despite the tragedy of his death, the spirit of Patteson’s work lived on, and today the Church of Melanesia is an independent province in the Anglican Communion.

COMMEMORATION St. Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) Priest, 1882 September 23 Padre Pio was born of simple, hardworking farming people on May 25, 1887, in Pietrelcina in southern Italy. He was tutored privately until his entry into the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars at the age of 15. Of feeble health but strong will, with the help of grace he completed the required studies and was ordained a priest in on August 10, 1910. [It is said that] on September 20, 1918, the five wounds of Our Lord’s Passion appeared on his body, making him the first priest with the stigmata in the history of the Church. ... Countless people were attracted to his confessional and many more received his saintly counsel and spiritual guidance through correspondence. His whole life was marked by long hours of prayer and continual austerity. His letters to his spiritual directors reveal the ineffable sufferings, physical and spiritual, which accompanied him all through life. They also reveal his very deep union with God and his burning love for the Blessed Eucharist and Our Blessed Lady. Worn out by over half a century of intense suffering and constant apostolic activity in San Giovanni Rotondo, where his monastery was located, he [died] on September 23, 1968. After a public funeral that attracted 100,000, his body was entombed in the crypt of Our Lady of Grace Church. For All the Saints: Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994
