Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.

You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection WRESTLING JACOB Come, O thou Traveller unknown, Whom still I hold, but cannot see; My company before is gone, And I am left alone with thee; With thee all night I mean to stay And wrestle till the break of day. I need not tell thee who I am, My misery and sin declare; Thyself hast called my by my name, Look on thy hands and read it there: But who, I ask thee, who art thou? Tell me thy name, and tell me now. In vain thou strugglest to get free; I never will unloose my hold: Art thou the Man that died for me? The secret of thy love unfold: Wrestling, I will not let thee go Till I thy name, thy nature know. Yield to me now, for I am weak, But confident, in self-despair; Speak to my heart, in blessings speak, Be conquered by my instant prayer: Speak, or thou never hence shalt move, And tell me if thy name is Love. 'Tis Love, 'tis Love! Thou diedst for me! I hear thy whisper in my heart; The morning breaks, the shadows flee, Pure, universal Love thou art: To me, to all, thy mercies move; Thy nature and thy name is Love. Charles Wesley (1707-1788), inspired by this week’s OT reading, Genesis 32.22-31, New English Hymnal 350 4 | SOLEMN MASS

HYMN 357 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Let All the World in Every Corner Sing

Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King! The heavens are not too high, his praise may thither fly; the earth is not too low, his praises there may grow. Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King! Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King! The church with psalms must shout, no door can keep them out; but above all, the heart must bear the longest part. Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King!

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Genesis. The same night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, ‘Let me go, for the day is breaking.’ But Jacob said, ‘I will not let you go, unless you bless me.’ So he said to him, ‘What is your name?’ And he said, ‘Jacob.’ Then the man said, ‘You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed.’ Then Jacob asked him, ‘Please tell me your name.’ But he said, ‘Why is it that you ask my name?’ And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, ‘For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.’ The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. Genesis 32:22-31

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

I lift up my eyes to the hills; from where is my help to come? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved and he who watches over you will not fall asleep. Antiphon Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep; The Lord himself watches over you; the Lord is your shade at your right hand, So that the sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. Antiphon

The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; it is he who shall keep you safe. The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in, from this time forth for evermore. Antiphon Psalm 121 SOLEMN MASS | 9

SECOND READING Reader

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy. As for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. 2 Timothy 3:14 - 4:5

HOLY GOSPEL Celebrant People People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, 'Grant me justice against my opponent.' For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, 'Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.'" And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" Luke 18:1-8

HYMN

Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 444 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Your Hand, O God, Has Guided 1 Your hand, O God, has guided your flock, from age to age; the wondrous tale is written, full clear, on every page. Our forebears owned your goodness and we their deeds record, and both of this bear witness: one church, one faith, one Lord.

3 When shadows, thickly falling, engulfed the world in night, you summoned forth your servants, your messengers of light. On them and on your people your plenteous grace was poured, and this was still their message: one church, one faith, one Lord.

2 Your heralds brought glad tidings to greatest as to least; they bade them rise, and hasten to share the royal feast; and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming one church, one faith, one Lord.

4 And we, shall we be faithless, shall hearts fail, hands hang down? Shall we evade the struggle and cast away the crown? Not so; in God's deep counsels some better gift is stored: the covenant of promise— one church, one faith, one Lord.

5 Your mercy will not fail us, nor leave your work undone; with your right hand to help us, your people shall be one; and then, by all creation, your name shall be adored, and this shall be their anthem: one church, one faith, one Lord.

SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES On Sunday afternoon at 4.00 pm the Choir will lead us in Choral Evensong, one of the glories of Anglican worship. After the anthem, the priest will set on the altar the monstrance (from the Latin “to show”), a stand with a glass “clock-face” surrounded by a gold sunburst in which the consecrated bread, “the host,” is placed for all to gaze upon. There then follows a time of silence, another anthem, prayers and a hymn, all before Jesus present in his Blessed Sacrament. The priest then makes the sign of the cross over the people with the monstrance. What is all this for? How is it different from receiving Holy Communion in the Mass? When we take communion, of course, we are joined together with each other and the whole Church of God as the Body of Christ. We draw strength from the Lord to go out to live with his life and

love with his love in the world. In this service of Benediction, as in the Holy Hour we keep on the second Sunday of each month, we are given space to bask in the presence of Jesus with us in sacramental form, as once he was present in human form 2000 years ago. We can delight in him, and rest in his presence amongst us, bringing to him our thanksgivings, prayers and concerns. Doris, a former parishioner of mine in the north of England, used to say, “Father, it’s like looking at the menu in a restaurant, anticipating and savouring all the delights that are to come!”

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

Blessed, praised and hallowed be Jesus Christ on his throne of glory, and in the most holy sacrament of the altar! Every blessing, Fr Kevin

TREASURER’S REPORT OCTOBER 2019 As we race towards the end of another fiscal year, St. James’ finances are in good order. As ever, St. James’ endowment, nurtured so generously by those who have gone before us, supplies a significant portion of our operating expenses. As well, special funds, earmarked for maintenance and capital expenses, help us to undertake important work for the preservation of our beautiful buildings for future generations. As well, these funds allow us to make improvements that serve the parish’s needs today. Because we are able to draw a sustainable amount from our endowment annually, there may be the thought that the need for one’s donations isn’t quite so important. And while there have been bountiful years in the investment realm, there will also be lean ones. In this time of trade wars, environmental crises, and political upheavals, the potential for our investment returns to be lower than in previous years is real. Our regular giving, significant though it is already, needs to continue growing to keep us from having to rely too heavily on our endowment in the future. In the coming weeks, your Treasurer and Wardens will work together with the Trustees to create the 2020 budget. We humbly ask for your prayers, and for the Lord’s guidance in our labours. The monthly financial statements will receive a few updates soon to reflect the former Rectory building name change and new activities therein. If you have any questions or input, please contact any of us on the Parish Officers list. Respectfully, Christopher Orr

Please add names to be remembered at the Mass to the list at the back of the church. PAX Contributions are invited for the Advent and Christmas edition of PAX. The broad theme again for this year-end issue considers the work of the Holy Spirit in our Parish, and explores where the Spirit may be leading St. James’. How is the Holy Spirit sustaining this church? Where do we see the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit – in the life of St. James’, in our own lives, and in the life of the wider community of the Downtown Eastside? Mindful of our strong tradition of social concern alongside our rich liturgy and sacramental worship, how is St. James’ being called to serve today? Submissions need not be theme related, for all contributions are welcome: poetry, pictures, articles (normally, not to exceed 500 words). Please leave or send your contributions c/o the Church Office, or send them directly to Paul Stanwood at stap@shaw.ca . Submission deadline is Sun. Nov. 17.

PARISH MEMBERSHIP NOTICE In preparation for our Stewardship Renewal we want to make sure our Membership Roll is up to date. If you are not already on our parish register, please fill out a yellow Membership Form and put it in the collection plate, or return it to the church office.
