High Mass
Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost | October 14, 2018 | 10:30 am
Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst; To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish;
To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 8:30 am Low Mass, Lady Chapel 9:15 am Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 10:30 am High Mass, Church 12:00 pm Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 4:00 pm Choral Evensong & Benediction, Church ______________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection A Christian community is evangelized in order to evangelize. A light is lit in order to give light. A candle is not lit to be put under a bushel, said Christ. It is lit and put up high in order to give light. That is what a true community is like. A community is a group of men and women who have found the truth in Christ and in his gospel, and who follow the truth and join together to follow it more strongly. It is not just an individual conversion, but a community conversion. It is a family that believes, a group that accepts God. In the group, each one finds that the brother or sister is a source of strength and that in moments of weakness they help one another and, by loving one another and believing, they give light and example. The preacher no longer needs to preach, for there are Christians who preach by their own lives. I said once and I repeat today that if, unhappily, some day they silence our radio and don’t let us write our newspaper, each of you who believe must become a microphone, a radio station, a loudspeaker, not to talk, but to call for faith. I am not afraid that our faith may depend only on the archbishop’s preaching; I don’t think I’m that important. I believe that this message, which is only a humble echo of God’s word, enters your hearts, not because it is mine, but because it comes from God. St Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, shot celebrating Mass on 24 March 1980, canonised today in Rome by Pope Francis

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Amos. Seek the Lord and live, or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire, and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it. Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood, and bring righteousness to the ground! They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks the truth. Therefore, because you trample on the poor and take from them levies of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins—you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate. Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said. Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. Amos 5:6-7, 10-15

Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning; so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life. Make us glad by the measure of the days that you afflicted us and the years in which we suffered adversity. Antiphon Show your servants your works and your splendour to their children. May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; prosper the work of our hands; prosper our handiwork. Antiphon Psalm 90:12-17
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:12-16

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.'" He said to him, "Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." They were greatly astounded and said to one another, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible." Peter began to say to him, "Look, we have left everything and followed you." Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age - houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions - and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first." Mark 10:17-31

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible Notes from the Clergy “Count your blessings, name them one by one,” goes the old Revivalist hymn. Last Monday was Thanksgiving, in Canada a time to celebrate the gifts of family and friendship, the creation and the harvest. Whilst it is good to have a particular day set apart for this purpose, regular, even daily, thanksgiving has a fruitful part to play in our lives, in our relationships with God, with one another, with ourselves and with the world in which we live. Our lives are so pressured, so much to do, so busy, rushing from one place, one thing, to another; so many demands are placed upon us and our time, deadlines to meet, emails to answer. We are assaulted on all sides by one or other media, promising instant fulfilment of this sense or that. Too often there is little or no time to stand back, take stock, reflect. Too often we are so immersed, so overwhelmed, by all this happening around us that we fail to notice and to appreciate what is good. Life in and around St James’ has been a bit like this for me lately: so much to do that I have failed to name and celebrate the good that we have been achieving together over the past couple of years.
I am grateful to Fr Matthew for his encouragement during this past week’s retreat “to count our blessings, to name them one by one:” our worship and fellowship together, open church, our music, coffee hour and formation, radical inclusion, street outreach, our community networks with the music academy and other groups, our diocese. This led me too to take time to give thanks for those who love and care for me, near and far, and for all the good things I enjoy, but so often take for granted. So I commend, to you and to myself, the regular practice of being thankful: reviving the practice of grace before meals, for example, or in daily recollection making sure to give thanks for a particular person or happening. Come to the Eucharist, our great Christian thanksgiving, with something on your heart for which to give thanks. Remember too to say “Thank you” to those around you, for acts of kindness and friendship, the little things as well as the big.

CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS A long-standing tradition of Anglican churches is the rôle of Choral Scholar — a university student who receives a scholarship in exchange for singing in the choir. The programme adds voices to our choir, and also offers students a marvellous opportunity to gain experience singing some of the finest church music in a liturgical setting. Over the past few years Choral Scholars have enriched our services, and has been made possible by a number of generous donations from individual parishioners. If you appreciate music, please consider supporting the Choral Scholarship programme. To do so online, go to https://stjames.bc.ca/donate, and specify 2435 Music Scholarship as to the purpose of your donation. Alternatively, you can use the donation envelope from the pew and write 2435 Music Scholarship on the envelope. SOLEMN REQUIEM The Durufle Requiem will be sung on Fri. Nov. 2, All Souls’ Day, at 6.30 pm, and on Sun. Nov. 11, Remembrance Day, at 10.30 am, to mark the Centenary of the end of World War I. The St. James’ Choir is joined by the Vancouver organist David Poon in a presentation of Maurice Duruflé’s luminous Requiem (Op. 9). Using the Gregorian plainchant melodies of the Requiem, clothed in contemporary harmonies, Duruflé created a harmonic garment which is both sumptuous and sober, a masterpiece of 20thcentury composition.
