Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Live like a poor man without parading your poverty. Stand by the poor wherever they live and work. Your first love must go out to the least of men. Don’t tie yourself down to the rich or powerful of the world. Get rid of the inclination to court the great and influential. Otherwise you would deform the image of the Church. Put your trust in God, wait for His mercy and for all that you need. Above all, take Jesus as your riches, the pearl for which you will give everything, your treasure in heaven. Don’t be romantic about this; take your part in the simple struggle for a living, but without attaching your heart to what you can earn by it. In this way you will be able to help many people and at the same time be a condemnation of every form of materialism or snobbery. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Job. Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements - surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?" "Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that a flood of waters may cover you? Can you send forth lightnings, so that they may go and say to you, 'Here we are'? Who has put wisdom in the inward parts, or given understanding to the mind? Who has the wisdom to number the clouds? Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens, when the dust runs into a mass and the clods cling together? Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, when they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in their covert? Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food?" Job 38:1-7, 34-41)

You lay the beams of your chambers in the waters above; you make the clouds your chariot; you ride on the wings of the wind. You make the winds your messengers and flames of fire your servants. You have set the earth upon its foundations, so that it never shall move at any time. You covered it with the deep as with a mantle; the waters stood higher than the mountains. Antiphon At your rebuke they fled; at the voice of your thunder they hastened away. They went up into the hills and down to the valleys beneath, to the places you had appointed for them. You set the limits that they should not pass; they shall not again cover the earth. Antiphon O Lord, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Hallelujah! Antiphon Psalm 104:3-9, 25, 37b
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:1-10

HOLY GOSPEL Celebrant People People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They replied, "We are able." Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." Mark 10:35-45

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. "One offering, single and complete," with lips and hearts we say; but what he never can repeat he shows forth day by day. For as the priest of Aaron's line within the holiest stood, and sprinkled all the mercy shrine with sacrificial blood; So he, who once atonement wrought, our Priest of endless power, presents himself for those he bought in that dark noontide hour. His manhood pleads where now it lives on heaven's eternal throne, and where in mystic rite he gives its presence to his own. And so we show thy death, O Lord, till thou again appear, and feel, when we approach thy board, we have an altar here.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY St. Luke (feast-day 18 October), the writer of the Gospel that bears his name and of the Acts of the Apostles, is referred to by St. Paul, whom he accompanied at some point on his journeys, as the Beloved Physician. St. Luke'stide, then, is a particularly appropriate time to give thanks and pray for all engaged in the work of healing and healthcare, mindful of their skill and dedication: hospitals and clinics, surgeons, doctors and nurses, dentists and opticians; not least in the Downtown Eastside, those working in the spheres of mental health and addiction; medical schools and research; paramedics; pharmaceutical companies; the medical aid charities. We do well too to give thanks for the Church's ministry of healing, a sign of God's longing for the wholeness and well-being of all: we pray for those who administer and receive the sacraments of the laying-on of hands & anointing, and of reconciliation, and particularly for the work of hospital chaplains.
The Healing Professions Most merciful Father, you have taught us to love you with all our strength and to glorify you in our bodies: We commend to you for your continual blessing all engaged in the work of healthcare. Prosper all that is being done for the healing of the sick, the conquest of disease, and the training of doctors and nurses; that your will may be done in the relief of suffering and the making of lives whole; through Jesus Christ our Lord. St. Luke Almighty God, you inspired your servant Saint Luke the physician to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of your Son: Manifest in your Church the like power and love, to the healing of our bodies and our souls; through the same your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

But what does Jesus say to a rich man who asks what he should do to enter God’s kingdom? Jesus answers that it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for this rich man to enter God’s kingdom. Jesus was not saying that having lots of money was a bad thing, but making a point to the rich man that he needed to learn to trust in God and His Grace rather than to place his confidence in having lots of money.
It was not the money that caused the problem for this rich man, but the fact that he valued his money more than having a relationship with God; more than receiving the eternal rewards that God promises to those who follow Him. The rich man was asking Jesus how to be saved, but he loved his money too much to make room for Jesus in his life. His money was his god.
We are all unique to God and He knows what we place first in our lives ahead of our relationship with Him. Heavenly Father, Please help us to value our relationship with you and to grow in your love. Please help us to remember that following you is more important than all the money in the world. Help us to remember to share with others who do not have what we have, sharing is a way of us showing Gods love to others. Amen WANTED One of our parishioners, who lives in the neighbourhood, needs to buy a used car as soon as possible. Please contact the Office for more information.
If you were asked if you would like to win the lottery and have lots of money, what would your answer be? The chances are that you would say “Yes, yes, yes!”

Here is a chance to have passed friends and family remembered – all names forwarded to the church are read aloud as part of the service. THE THURIBLE | 29
COMMEMORATION SS. Jean de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, and their Companions Missionaries and Martyrs in New France, 1642-1649 October 19
Today we honour the eight Canadian martyrs who suffered for Christ between 1642 and 1649; and we name two of them especially — Jean de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues. Jogues came to Canada in 1636 and was posted to the Huron mission on Georgian Bay. Six years later he was captured by the Iroquois and endured horrific trials for a full twelve months before making his escape to France. Undeterred by his experiences, he returned to New France and volunteered to open a Jesuit mission among his former captors. He was accompanied by a Jesuit lay-brother named Jean de La Lande. As soon as they arrived among the Mohawks, the two Jesuits were taken prisoner. On October eighteenth, 1646, Jogues was hatcheted to death; La Lande suffered the same fate the next day. Jean de Brébeuf was one of the first Jesuit priests to arrive in New France and in 1633 he settled among the Hurons on Georgian Bay. He felt complete solidarity with the crucified Jesus and had mystical premonitions that he would share the sufferings of Christ in his own flesh. His visions came true in 1649, when Iroquois war parties invaded Huronia for the second year in a row. On March sixteenth they assaulted the mission of Saint-Louis, where Brébeuf and another Jesuit priest named Gabriel Lalemant were staying. The two Jesuits refused to abandon their flock and were captured. Later that afternoon, and on through the night, Brébeuf was subjected to atrocities which defy description. He endured until dawn the next day, when an Iroquois warrior ended his sufferings. Lalemant was put through a similar ordeal later that day and was finally killed towards sunset. By their faithfulness Brébeuf, Jogues, and their six companions won a victory that is as vast as God’s mercy. For their victory was in the cross of Christ, whose love for the Huron and Iroquois peoples was the reason they gave up their lives. COMMEMORATION Saint Luke The Evangelist Transferred to October 20
Luke is mentioned three times in the Letters of Saint Paul, once as “the beloved physician,” but the Church remembers him chiefly as the author of two books which came to be included in the New Testament. The first book is the one we know as the Gospel according to Luke, where he told the story of Jesus, his preaching and mighty work in the border-country of Galilee, his suffering, death and resurrection at the very heart of Israel, in Jerusalem itself. The second of Luke’s two books is the Acts of the Apostles. In this work he told how the good news was spread: how the apostles began their preaching at Jerusalem and moved westwards with the gospel until they reached the very centre of the Roman Empire, the city of Rome itself. Thus, in these two books, Luke presented a comprehensive history of the gospel in terms of a journey from the hinterland of Judea to the heartland of imperial power and civilization. We offer thanks to God for bestowing such gifts of understanding and literary skill on Luke, and we celebrate Luke himself because he responded so faithfully to the working of grace. But still, we remember the story-teller for the story that he told; and that story is the Lord’s story. So, on this his day, we can honour Saint Luke no more highly than by joining in the telling of that story, which God gave him power to give us; that story which is the praise of God through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit.
