Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES Like you I received Fr. Kevin’s letter encouraging us to consider prayerfully how to respond to the call for a renewed commitment of generosity toward the church and its ministry, recognizing that all we have comes from God. Time, talents, treasure. These are the categories. At this time of year I find myself focussed on the treasure part of this request and begin to feel stressed about money. I’ve been praying and reading and want to share with you an excerpt from a book by Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama. This year, I’m trying not to focus on what I won’t have and instead pray about gratitude and generosity. In the book (The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World), the voice of the Archbishop speaks about compassion and then goes on to say that, while necessary, compassion and a desire to help is not enough. The action that follows is generosity. In many religions generosity has been formalized and in some cases mandated. However the book talks about tithing and expanding
on financial tithing to include time and talent as well. In Buddhism, there is a practice of material giving, giving freedom from fear and spiritual giving. Time, talent, treasure. When we begin tithing, this is really a practice that begins a monthly, weekly, or daily practice that changes our thinking and how we can give to others in the way we live our faith. Giving freedom from fear can involve giving protection, counsel or solace. Think about who needs your time today? Your spouse, your children, a friend, a stranger on the street? We are asking ourselves, who could we be reaching out to? Who needs us? That could be here at church or outside our walls. Spiritual giving. You don’t have to be ordained to do this work! This might be praying with someone, smiling at people as you walk down the street, or offering wisdom or opportunity to serve to help a person feel like they have a role instead of just a seat in the church.

CHORAL SCHOLARSHIP MINI-CONCERT & DINNER Sat., Nov. 16, 5:30 pm, Blessed Sacrament Chapel Over the past few years, St. James’ High Mass Choir has been enriched by Choral Scholars — a programme that has been supported by generous donations by individual parishioners, and we are in need of help this year as well.

The broad theme again for this year-end issue considers the work of the Holy Spirit in our Parish, and explores where the Spirit may be leading St. James’. How is the Holy Spirit sustaining this church? Where do we see the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit – in the life of St. James’, in our own lives, and in the life of the wider community of the Downtown Eastside? Mindful of our strong tradition of social concern alongside our rich liturgy and sacramental worship, how is St. James’ being called to serve today? FUNERAL PLANNING November, the month of remembering, All Saints’, All Souls’ and Armistice Day, is a timely reminder to us all of our own mortality, and of our responsibility to prepare ourselves spiritually and by ordering our affairs. For the sake of family & friends, it is important that we have a Will, and that we leave instructions regarding our preferred funeral arrangements.
