As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. (St. Richard of Chichester)

Entrance Rite PRELUDE Variations on 'Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort' – Sander van der Ploeg At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 528 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — O God, Our Help in Ages Past O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home: Under the shadow of thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting thou art God, To endless years the same. A thousand ages in thy sight Are like an evening gone, Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all our years away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Job. “O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock for ever! For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me! Job 19:23-27a

Reader Allll

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Hear my plea of innocence, O Lord; give heed to my cry; listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips. Let my vindication come forth from your presence; let your eyes be fixed on justice. Weigh my heart, summon me by night, melt me down; you will find no impurity in me. Antiphon I give no offence with my mouth as others do; I have heeded the words of your lips. My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; in your paths my feet shall not stumble. I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; incline your ear to me and hear my words. Antiphon SOLEMN MASS | 9

Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, O Saviour of those who take refuge at your right hand from those who rise up against them. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me under the shadow of your wings, From the wicked who assault me, from my deadly enemies who surround me. Antiphon Psalm 17:1-9

SECOND READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him a question, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her." Jesus said to them, "Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive." Luke 20:27-38

Come, ye faithful, raise the anthem, Cleave the skies with shouts of praise; Sing to him who found the ransom, Ancient of eternal days, God eternal, Word incarnate, Whom the heaven of heaven obeys. Ere he raised the lofty mountains, Formed the seas, or built the sky, Love eternal, free, and boundless, Forced the Lord of life to die, Lifted up the Prince of princes On the throne of Calvary. Now on those eternal mountains Stands the sapphire throne, all bright, With the ceaseless alleluias Which they raise, the sons of light; Sion's people tell his praises, Victor after hard-won fight.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES Like you I received Fr. Kevin’s letter encouraging us to consider prayerfully how to respond to the call for a renewed commitment of generosity toward the church and its ministry, recognizing that all we have comes from God. Time, talents, treasure. These are the categories. At this time of year I find myself focussed on the treasure part of this request and begin to feel stressed about money. I’ve been praying and reading and want to share with you an excerpt from a book by Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama. This year, I’m trying not to focus on what I won’t have and instead pray about gratitude and generosity. In the book (The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World), the voice of the Archbishop speaks about compassion and then goes on to say that, while necessary, compassion and a desire to help is not enough. The action that follows is generosity. In many religions generosity has been formalized and in some cases mandated. However the book talks about tithing and expanding

on financial tithing to include time and talent as well. In Buddhism, there is a practice of material giving, giving freedom from fear and spiritual giving. Time, talent, treasure. When we begin tithing, this is really a practice that begins a monthly, weekly, or daily practice that changes our thinking and how we can give to others in the way we live our faith. Giving freedom from fear can involve giving protection, counsel or solace. Think about who needs your time today? Your spouse, your children, a friend, a stranger on the street? We are asking ourselves, who could we be reaching out to? Who needs us? That could be here at church or outside our walls. Spiritual giving. You don’t have to be ordained to do this work! This might be praying with someone, smiling at people as you walk down the street, or offering wisdom or opportunity to serve to help a person feel like they have a role instead of just a seat in the church.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

OUR PARISH STEWARDSHIP RENEWAL “Christian Stewardship is a lifestyle choice that recognizes that everything is a gift from God. Jesus taught that our responsibility as disciples is to recognize that God is the provider of all that we possess and that our call is to be generous givers. A Christian steward contributes his or her time, talent, prayers, and financial resources with a willing and joyful spirit. Being a generous giver is a spiritual response to God’s goodness.” David Bell, United Methodist Church. November is our annual Stewardship month, when we are all invited to reflect prayerfully on our 28 | THE THURIBLE

Christian discipleship and the commitment of our time, our talents and our treasure. Every member on the Parish Roll should have received a letter, with a prayer card, and two forms, one for a financial pledge, one for a commitment of time. Please return the forms in the offertory (or by post, if you prefer) by Sunday 24 November, the Feast of the Reign of Christ, when there will be a celebratory Parish Lunch. Please sign up on the list at the back of church. This season is also an opportunity to acknowledge and thank all those engaged in our different Guilds and Ministries, through which St James’ lives out its calling as the Body of Christ, in worship, witness, mission and service. This week we give particular thanks to and for the Wardens & Trustees, the Treasurer, Envelope Secretary & Counters, and the Clergy. CHORAL SCHOLARSHIP MINI-CONCERT & DINNER Sat., Nov. 16, 5:30 pm, Blessed Sacrament Chapel Over the past few years, St. James’ High Mass Choir has been enriched by Choral Scholars — a programme that has been supported by generous donations by individual parishioners, and we are in need of help this year as well.

If you appreciate music, please consider supporting the Choral Scholarship Programme. You can use the donation envelope from the pew and write "Music Scholarship" on the envelope. Or go to www.stjames.bc.ca/donate to give online and specify "Music Scholarship" as the purpose of your donation. Also — you are warmly invited to a Mini-Concert by the Choral Scholars on Nov. 16, followed by a dinner in the Parish Centre. It is an opportunity to hear the Choral Scholars sing, and to meet with them over dinner. Admission is free, but please contact the church office in person or by email (office@stjames.bc.ca) if you would like to come to this event, so that we can plan for dinner.

PAX Contributions are invited for the Advent and Christmas edition of PAX. The broad theme again for this year-end issue considers the work of the Holy Spirit in our Parish, and explores where the Spirit may be leading St. James’. How is the Holy Spirit sustaining this church? Where do we see the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit – in the life of St. James’, in our own lives, and in the life of the wider community of the Downtown Eastside? Mindful of our strong tradition of social concern alongside our rich liturgy and sacramental worship, how is St. James’ being called to serve today? Submissions need not be theme related, for all contributions are welcome: poetry, pictures, articles (normally, not to exceed 500 words). Please leave or send your contributions c/o the Church Office, or send them directly to Paul Stanwood at stap@shaw.ca . Submission deadline is Sun. Nov. 17.

Please let the office know if you plan to attend: office@stjames.bc.ca | 604-685-2532. HOT SOX Please donate part-woollen work socks, or funds to purchase them, for the Mission to Seafarers to give out at Christmas time. There will be a box for them in the narthex. The Women’s Guild will be wrapping them (and others collected from around the Diocese) on Wed. Dec. 11 at 10 am in the Parish Centre. FUNERAL PLANNING November, the month of remembering, All Saints’, All Souls’ and Armistice Day, is a timely reminder to us all of our own mortality, and of our responsibility to prepare ourselves spiritually and by ordering our affairs. For the sake of family & friends, it is important that we have a Will, and that we leave instructions regarding our preferred funeral arrangements.
