Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost | October 20, 2013 | 10:30 am
Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES • To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Mission begins in the heart of the Triune God and the love which binds together the Holy Trinity overflows to all humanity and creation. (2) Life in the Holy Spirit is the essence of mission, the core of why we do what we do, and how we live our lives. (3) All Christians, churches and congregations are called to be vibrant messengers of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the good news of salvation. Evangelism is a confident but humble sharing of our faith and conviction with other people. Such sharing is a gift to others which announces the love, grace and mercy of God in Christ. It is the inevitable fruit of genuine faith. Therefore, in each generation, the church must renew its commitment to evangelism as an essential part of the way we convey God’s love to the world. How can we proclaim God’s love and justice to a generation living in an individualized, secularized and materialized world? (8) Our encounter with the Triune God is inward, personal, and communal but also directs us outward in missionary endeavour. (26) Jesus has told us, “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24, KJV). The policy of unlimited growth through the domination of the global free market is an ideology that claims to be without alternative, demanding an endless flow of sacrifices from the poor and from nature. “It makes the false promise that it can save the world through creation of wealth and prosperity, claiming sovereignty over life and demanding total allegiance which amounts to idolatry”. This is a global system of mammon that protects the unlimited growth of wealth of only the rich and powerful through endless exploitation. This tower of greed is threatening the whole household of God. The reign of God is in direct opposition to the empire of mammon. (31) Through Christ in the Holy Spirit, God indwells the church, empowering and energizing its members. Thus mission becomes for Christians an urgent inner compulsion (1 Corinthians 9:16), even a test and criterion for authentic life in Christ, rooted in the profound demands of Christ’s love, to invite others to share in the fullness of life Jesus came to bring. Participating in God’s mission, therefore, should be natural for all Christians and all churches, not only for particular individuals or specialized groups. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Jeremiah. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humans and the seed of animals. And just as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord. In those days they shall no longer say: "The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge." But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour grapes shall be set on edge. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt - a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the second letter of Paul to Timothy. As for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficieint, equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, 'Grant me justice against my opponent.' For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, 'Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.'" And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" Luke 18:1-8

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +

The flowers at the High Altar are given to the Glory of God and in loving memory of Sybil Ainsworth from Barrie & Margaret Vickers
Sybil Ainsworth, whose requiem mass we celebrated on Thursday, was a very talented flower arranger. Over thirty years ago, Sybil was a valued member of the Flower Guild, and even after she resigned, she continued to arrange flowers at the Lady Altar. For over thirty years, every Christmas and Easter and on any Feast Day dedicated to Our Lady, Sybil would faithfully bring and arrange the flowers, until the Christmas before last. Since then, her health has not allowed her to return. Today the High Altar flowers are dedicated to her memory, while a single lily stands at the Lady Altar because nobody can arrange flowers there as Sybil could.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES Welcome to a new look. Over the years this paper booklet has been described as a bulletin, a Mass Booklet, even a programme. During the Parish Review consultation, when I asked parishioners “How do you keep yourself informed about life at St. James’?” The most frequent response was the back pages of this booklet. So this new design is in response to feedback from parishioners. We all have a responsibility to keep ourselves informed about news, events and opportunities to serve in our home church – our Parish. I hope The Thurible will be an enhancement of this primary means of communication at St. James’. However, this presents us with a challenge. Since many parishioners do not yet attend Sunday Mass on a weekly, or fortnightly, basis currently their access to this source of weekly information is limited. So we are planning to release an electronic version of The Thurible as an email broadcast each Saturday. This will give a new opportunity for parishioners to keep informed about our common life at St. James’. So the Sunday Booklet will contain The Liturgy of the day in the first half and the second half will comprise The Thurible. The liturgy section includes all the music, prayers, readings and directions necessary to fully
participate in worship. At St. James’ we practice “liturgical evangelism”. That is to say, through the welcome we extend to newcomers (and indeed everyone) and this user-friendly resource, we are committed to equip everyone to present themselves to God through the liturgy and participate with ease. The liturgy is transformative because we meet God through Scripture, sacrament, prayer, music, sacred action and gathering as the body of Christ. The Liturgy is a rich resource and tool for ministry. Many visitors and newcomers express to me their thankfulness for this resource which enriches their experience of worship. As a parish we commit hours of staff time and production costs each week to The Liturgy because we know how powerfully God’s grace and mercy is given through our presence and participation in the liturgy of the Church. I give thanks to God for belonging to a parish which values and knows the generosity of God which is at work through the liturgy – the work of the people of God. And I give thanks for The Thurible which week by week will be committed to resourcing the people of God for action, outreach and service in our daily living and the world.

SAINTS THIS WEEK Alfred the Great is commemorated on Saturday (26th) of this week.
In his later years, Alfred sought to repair the damage that the Viking invasions had inflicted on culture and learning, especially among the parish clergy. With the help of scholars from Wales and the Continent, he supervised translations into English of important classics of theology and history, including works of Pope Gregory the Great, Augustine of Hippo, and the Venerable Bede. In one of them he commented: “He seemed to me a very foolish man, and very wretched, who will not increase his understanding while he is in the world, and ever wish long to reach that endless life where all shall be made clear.”

Pray for all, especially for those who may not have had anyone to pray for them. You are welcome to come and remember all of your beloved ones who have moved on from this life. If you have names of the departed you would like read aloud during the prayers, please contact the church office by Monday October, 28 at 604-685-2532. Everyone is welcome. OPEN HOUSE: ST. JAMES’ ANGLICAN CHURCH Saturday, November 2, 12:00 – 4:00 pm At 12:20 pm students from the Saint James Music Academy together with the City Opera Vancouver will give an entertaining half-hour performance. At 1:15 join the long-term parishioner Allan Duncan for a guided tour of this unique church during which he will describe its architecture and the personalities who were involved in its construction in the 1930s. During the afternoon, view a display by the St. James’ Sanctuary Guild — “The Treasures of St. James’”. It features elaborate embroidered vestments, altar linens of hand-made lace, chalices, patens, burses, and thuribles. At 3:00 listen to a dramatic reading of the medieval morality play, Everyman. Notables in the cast are UBC English professors Dr. Paul Stanwood and Dr. Leslie Arnovick, and actress Sheila Paterson. The fifteenthcentury morality play, Everyman, presents an allegory of the moral struggle all Christians face as their own qualities, good and bad, push and pull them toward Heaven or Hell. Come hear what happens when Everyman finally encounters “Death”!
