If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the church’s mission. No set of goals and objectives includes everything. This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own. Amen. St Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, shot celebrating Mass on 24 March 1980, canonised 14 October 2018 by Pope Francis

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper. Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53:4-12

For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. They shall bear you in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and adder; you shall trample the young lion and the serpent under your feet. Antiphon Because he is bound to me in love, therefore will I deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I am with him in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him to honour. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation. Antiphon Psalm 91:9-16

EPISTLE READING Reader

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:1-10

HOLY GOSPEL Celebrant People People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They replied, "We are able." Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." Mark 10:35-45

Where the paschal blood is poured, death's dark angel sheathes his sword; Israel's hosts triumphant go through the wave that drowns the foe. Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed, paschal victim, paschal bread; with sincerity and love eat we manna from above.

Mighty victim from on high, hell's fierce powers beneath thee lie; death is broken in the fight, thou hast brought us life and light. Now no more can death appall, now no more the grave enthrall! Thou hast opened paradise, and in thee thy saints shall rise. This, our gift of Easter joy, sin alone can now destroy; from sin's power do thou set free souls new-born, O Lord, in thee. Hymns of glory, songs of praise, Father, unto thee we raise; risen Lord, all praise to thee, with the Spirit ever be.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible Notes from the Clergy On Oct. 18 we observed the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist, the author of the Gospel which bears his name and of the Acts of the Apostles, a companion of St. Paul, and, tradition says, a doctor and an artist. Luke is sometimes referred to as “the Beloved Physician.” This celebration, alongside three conversations in which I have shared this week, have led me to reflect for a moment on the Church’s healing ministry, and its relationship to cultural context and to the medical profession. I am grateful to a psychologist member of St. James’, to a research student from Adler University, and to speakers at the Indigenous Talking Circle hosted at the Synod Office. Jesus says in St. John’s Gospel, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” Life in its fulness is health, wholeness of body, mind and spirit. This is God’s longing for all of us. In Jesus’ ministry we see his healing of those who come to him in faith. We see too that the Church has continued this ministry of healing, in the Acts of the Apostles, in the Letter of James, and down the ages in two of the sacraments, the laying-on of hands and anointing, and reconciliation or confession.

This desire for wholeness, this ministry of healing and reconciliation, is one of the treasures the Church has to offer to an often broken and divided world. Too often there appears to be an antipathy between the medical profession, contemporary culture, and the Church’s healing ministry. My conversations this week have reinforced for me the sense of a complementarity here, rather than hostility. The Church delights in and celebrates the skills and expertise of the medical profession, and we may all benefit from the wisdom and insights of our First Nations elders and neighbours. Alongside both of these the Church offers its insights and its gifts: of prayer for wholeness of body, mind and spirit, of the declaration of forgiveness, making effective the reconciliation won by the selfgiving of Christ on the cross. Our Street Outreach’s recent workshops on “Trauma and Mindful Self-Compassion” are one example of this.

ORDER OF THE DIOCESE: INVESTITURE OF NEW MEMBERS Sat. Nov. 3, 10.30 am, Massey Theatre, New Westminster Receiving the ODNM: This year St. James' nominated Kelvin Bee to be the recipient of the Order of the Diocese of New Westminster (ODNW). Kelvin will receive the award on Nov. 3, 2018. Over the past ten years Kelvin has been an active member of St. James' and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Kelvin has worked with the St. James' leadership team over the years to guide the people of the parish to understand the church's past involvement with the Indian Residential school system, through his testimony and by encouraging the church to be active in the reconciliation process. In 2017 Kelvin, working with Fr. Matthew Johnson and the late Pat McSherry, applied for a grant from the Anglican Foundation to hold the first "Reconciliation Feast," where First Nations and Settler elders came together for a feast, to honor the people and the work of reconciliation that they have done together over the years. The feast was captured in a documentary which has been shared with the Anglican Church of Canada, in the hopes that other parishes will hold their own feasts. The witnesses and attendees of the feast received the gift of a scarf with the St. James' logo and a humming bird, an art piece by First Nations artist Ron LaRochelle from Haida Gwaii. Kevin was flabbergasted to be nominated for the ODNW and remains surprised that given his experience in the residential school system, he has come to a place where he has friends who are clergy, and a church where he is considered a leader and is serving as a Trustee. Kelvin also expressed some trepidation about being a First Nations nominee, and will be supported by his family, parishioners, and the St. James' clergy on the day.
