A Reflection SEVEN WHOLE DAYS: THE SIXTH DAY; HUMANITY You made us new and beautiful today, Your Spirit softened us like morning dew, Your Image shining from us through the clay, You made us new. You woke us and we knew ourselves in you, We walked together at the close of day, You trusted us and called us to be true. When we forsook your love and turned away You came and sought us where we hid from you, And on the cross, in darkness, on this day You made us new.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Malachi. See, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. Malachi 4:1-2a

Reader All

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. With his right hand and his holy arm has he won for himself the victory. The Lord has made known his victory; his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. Antiphon

He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. Sing to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the voice of song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout with joy before the King, the Lord. Antiphon Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, the lands and those who dwell therein. Let the rivers clap their hands, and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, when he comes to judge the earth. In righteousness shall he judge the world and the peoples with equity. Antiphon

SOLEMN MASS | 9

My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope. For you will not abandon me to the grave, nor let your holy one see the Pit. You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Antiphon Psalm 16

SECOND READING Reader

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. Now we command you, beloved in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, and we did not eat anyone's bread without paying for it; but with toil and labour we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. This was not because we do not have that right but in order to give you an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right. 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, Jesus said, "As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down." They asked him, "Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?" And he said, "Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, 'I am he!' and, 'The time is near!' Do not go after them. When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defence in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls." Luke 21:5-19

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. HYMN 601 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending God, whose giving knows no ending, from your rich and endless store: nature's wonder, Jesus' wisdom, costly cross, grave's shattered door; gifted by you, we turn to you, offering up ourselves in praise; thankful songs shall rise forever, gracious donor of our days. Skills and time are ours for pressing toward the goals of Christ, your Son: all at peace in health and freedom, races joined, the church made one. Now direct our daily labour, lest we strive for self alone; born with talents, make us servants fit to answer at your throne. Treasure, too, you have entrusted, gain through powers your grace conferred: ours to use for home and kindred, and to spread the gospel word. Open wide our hands in sharing, as we heed Christ's ageless call, healing, teaching, and reclaiming, serving you by loving all.

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES The Culture Crawl is this weekend, so the Eastside will be crawling with creativity! As human beings we are creative by nature, as Christians we believe this is because we are made in God’s image, and God is our creator! You don’t have to prowl through the studios in East Vancouver to find God’s creativity. You see it when you step outside, or when you look in the mirror! Our opinions on art are subjective. Have you ever looked at a painting or sculpture with a friend and thought “this is rubbish,” while they are enamoured with its beauty? Or listened to a piece of music that moved you to tears, while your spouse asked you to “turn off that racket!” We may not find the beauty in things that others do, but God sees the beauty in all creation. “God is creativity.

There’s something intrinsic to how God is conceived in the Bible that pulses with creativity. In the beginning God created… In the Hebrew imagination, the creative act of this God takes

place first through speech. God, in Genesis 1 is a poet generating worlds. God says, ‘Let there be light,’ and there is light. In Genesis 2, we see God crossing artistic genres. In the creation story of Genesis 2, God is not a poet, but a sculptor and gardener, too.

God makes the heavens and the earth, forms the first human from the dust, breathes into the human’s nostrils the breath of life, plants a garden in Eden, and makes fruitful trees grow… John’s gospel picks this up the divine-creative theme centuries later: ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, through him all things were made.’ Christ the Word, or in the Hebrew Bible, the Wisdom-Sophia, is present at creation, birthing and making and creating life…. In Jesus’ incarnation, life, death, and resurrection, God is revealed through all of human experience, which means that God is not only present in the typically beautiful or pretty things.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

Or, rather, maybe God’s beauty contains the tragedy and the pain. Karl Barth says, ‘God’s beauty embraces death as well as life, fear as well as joy, what we might call ugly as well as what we might call the beautiful.’

All of the arts, and ultimately all of reality, is an invitation to encounter God’s presence in the death, life, fear, joy, ugliness, and beauty of our own lives and world.” Excerpt from On Christianity, God as Creativity, and the Arts by Mark Longhurst. STEWARDSHIP RENEWAL “Christian Stewardship is a lifestyle choice that recognizes that everything is a gift from God. Jesus taught that our responsibility as disciples is to recognize that God is the provider of all that we possess and that our call is to be generous givers. A Christian steward contributes his or her time, talent, prayers, and financial resources with a willing and joyful spirit. Being a generous giver is a spiritual response to God’s goodness.” David Bell, United Methodist Church. November is our annual Stewardship month, when we are all invited to reflect prayerfully on our Christian discipleship and the commitment of our time, our talents and our treasure. Every member on the Parish Roll should have received a letter, with a prayer card, and two forms, one for a financial pledge, one for a commitment of time. Please return the forms in the offertory (or by post, if you prefer) by Sunday 24 November, the Feast of the Reign of Christ, when there will be a celebratory Parish Lunch. Please sign up on the list at the back of church. This season is also an opportunity to acknowledge and thank all those engaged in our different Guilds and Ministries, through which St James’ lives out its calling as the Body of Christ, in worship, witness, mission and service. This week we give particular thanks to and for the Women’s Guild, the Mothers’ Union, the Coming Home Society, Open Church, the Narthex and Hospitality Guilds. RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS The Worldwide Mothers’ Union supports the 16 Days of Activism -- Mon. Nov. 25 to Tue. Dec. 10. This is also known as the White Ribbon Campaign. Encouraging people to talk about gender-based violence is critical in breaking the silence and stigma that victims can often face and removing myths that can keep people silent. Creating a safe and non-judgmental environment may encourage those experiencing gender-based violence to speak out. It is therefore important to be aware of how to respond and support those who disclose such experiences.

Here are some general principles to consider: •Violence and abuse is always wrong and never acceptable. •The responsibility for the abuse lies with the perpetrator. •Ultimately, only the person experiencing abuse can decide what course of action to take. We invite all parishioners to wear the white ribbon if you are a woman and the moose hide square if you are a man and take this pledge: I pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls. ADVENT 2019: A COMPANION The Diocese is offering a daily Advent meditation contributed by Archbishop Melissa and spiritual directors in the diocese.
