High Mass

Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost | October 27, 2013 | 10:30 am

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES • To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

A Reflection When the churches of the West were rich and their countries powerful, when the missionary impulse re-awoke after 1790, it was natural for Western Churches to be “sending” churches and the other countries to be only on the receiving end. It could not have been otherwise. With the existence of a universal Church a new period dawned. The terms “sending” and “receiving” lost much of their meaning. Quickly the terms “older churches” and “younger churches” grew out of date. At the Second Vatican Council the black bishops of Africa contributed to the debates with mellow wisdom. Christians everywhere had the same work: to present Christian faith and life in the world, Western, Eastern, or Southern, which has its doubts, hostilities, and rival philosophies of life. The age of missions ended. The age of mission began. It was still different in different societies. To be a Christian in a half-Christian or post-Christian society, even in an officially anti-Christian but formerly Christian society, is not the same task as to be a Christian in an area which has neverheard the gospel before, in a speech which was never used there before, in a society where the organisation was never touched by Christian principles. A third of the people in the world, perhaps, have not yet heard the name of Jesus Christ, and another third, perhaps, have never heard the gospel presented in such a way as both to be intelligible and to make a claim on their personal lives. There is plenty still to be done. In this narration we have not tried at any point to conceal the weakness of human endeavour – the sinfulness and pettiness of the agents, the blind selfishness of the Churches, the niggardliness of the support that they have given to the work of the gospel, the mistakes that have been made, the treacheries, the catastrophes, the crimes by which the record is sullied. And yet the Church is there today, the Body of Christ in every land, the great miracle of history, in which the living God himself through his Holy Spirit is pleased to dwell. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Joel. O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame. Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness,

and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls. Joel 2:23-32

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

You are to be praised, O God, in Zion; to you shall vows be performed in Jerusalem. You visit the earth and water it abundantly; you make it very plenteous; the river of God is full of water. Antiphon You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty. May the meadows cover themselves with flocks, and the valleys cloak themselves with grain; let them shout for joy and sing. Antiphon Psalm 65:1, 9, 12, 14

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted." Luke 18:9-14

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES On Sunday last, after High Mass, I met with four visiting students from a Pentecostal Bible College. For these guests the worship experience at St. James' was very different when compared with their home Churches. They spoke of the friendly welcome they received by narthex members and many other parishioners. They enthused about the coffee hour and the importance of this ministry for folks to get to know one another. For them our worship was very participatory. They loved the many and varied opportunities to be involved in the worship of God. These visitors were struck by the reverence and awe in our worship and the prominence given to Holy Scripture. The length of the Mass (one hour and thirty minutes) seemed quite reasonable and regular to them. They read the instructions in the Mass Booklets and felt welcomed to receive Holy Communion. These young folk asked about our ministry in the neighbourhood. They observed that there is a lot of free food and shelter. I explained that St. James' has made a strategic choice to provide ministries which are not readily available.

The work of the Music Academy, the Street Outreach Initiative and Young Wolves Lodge each are specialized initiatives to meet needs which are being missed. Public worship three times a day with the offering of sacred space as a place for peace and healing too is a distinctive offering. A few days earlier at St. James' I met with twenty youth group members of High School age from a Lutheran Church in Burnaby. We explored the Church building together, afterwards we conversed in the Bishops' Room. One area of curiosity they expressed regarded perceptions about the neighbourhood. How safe is it? How is the area changing? What will be the implications for St. James? Who worships at St. James'? Frankly, I often feel at St. James' that as parishioners we do not appreciate the graces and gifts which are already in our midst. These are often recognized by visitors and guests but not by us. Let's open our hearts and eyes to God's work among us.

GROWING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD THE LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE CHRISTIAN IMAGINATION OCTOBER 27TH: EVERYMAN One way in which the life of Christ has been imagined is in English dramatic works. In the English morality plays that emerge in the late Middle Ages, Christ’s life is set as an example for His followers. The fifteenthcentury morality play, Everyman, presents an allegory of the moral struggle all Christians face as their own qualities, good and bad, push and pull them toward Heaven or Hell. When Death summons Everyman to come and give account of his life in this world, Everyman asks Fellowship, Goods, and Knowledge, along with Strength, Beauty, and Discretion, to accompany him into the grave; all abandon him except Good Deeds. Everyman is us, we learn, as we listen to this didactic play. Rehearsal for Everyman is in preparation for its dramatic reading at the Heart of the City Festival on November 2nd (3.00pm). LIVING THE GOSPEL: A Call to Ecojustice Sat. Nov 23rd, 9:00-4:00pm, Holy Name Parish Hall, 4925 Cambie at 33rd. OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE WOMEN’S GUILD The Women’s Guild thanks all those who donated goods and helped to sort and sell items at the Bargain Sale. The Guild will hold their Christmas Boutique Sale on the first Sunday in Advent, December 1st, 2013. OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE There are many and varied opportunities to serve through St. James' Church. Each Guild and Ministry makes a distinctive and vital contribution to the life of the Church. The booklet Membership at St. James' (available in the Narthex) give a comprehensive overview of many of these opportunities. The work of the Street Outreach Initiative, Saint James Music Academy and Young Wolves Lodge each depend on gifts, skills and resources which parishioners are encouraged to offer towards these good works. During forthcoming editions of The Thurible we plan to profile and promote the Guilds, Ministries and Initiatives of St. James'.

This week the Trustees and the Collegium have been reflecting upon the Key Findings: Parish Review Consultation at the 22nd Session of Parish Council. Please review this document if you haven’t done so already. It is available in the Narthex and upon request from the Office. •

Advent Sunday (December 1st) is the culmination date for the intensive period of the Parish Review which began in May. At this time we are planning three things:

An Advent Pastoral letter will be available to all parishioners. It will articulate a distillation of recommendations for action which have been identified during the review process. I am working in partnership with the Trustees and Collegium who will endorse this pastoral letter to the Parish. The purpose of this letter will be to inform, inspire and invite the engagement of parishioners. The letter will express the commitment of the lay and ordained leaders in our midst.

A Ministry and Mission Plan for St. James’ 2014 will be created as an instrument for the implementation of the actions which have been generated by the Parish Review. This tool will enable us to monitor the multiple actions which we have prioritized for 2014.

The traditional Advent Quiet Day of the Parish (Saturday December 7th) will be dedicated as a day of vigil with the purpose of commending our endeavours described by the Parish Review to the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. This day will be a second and complementary day of Prayer and Fasting before the Blessed Sacrament in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

It is never too late to talk and participate. Please speak to me or any member of the Collegium, or Trustees, if you want to contribute to our review process. I am grateful to the many parishioners who are participating in this journey of listening, focus and action to the glory of God and the pursuit of God’s Kingdom. Fr. Mark.

DIDO’S “DID YOU KNOW?” In response to parishioner’s feedback on the column “Ask Bear” in PAX, Dido the other resident canine in the Parish, now offers her insights in The Thurible.

Children and Youth are not the future of the Church. They are the now and the present of the Church with all other members of Christ's body.

The future of the Church is ever and only a work of the Holy Spirit. Since the source of our future is the promises of a God.

The Trustees of St. James' are preparing to advertise a Youth worker position. Money has been generously given for a part-time position for one year. Further donations are being invited to make the position more effective by securing funding for a two year term.

SAINTS THIS WEEK Saint Simon and Saint Jude Is commemorated on Monday, October 28, of this week.

Jude “the son of James” was also called Thaddeus. One of the Letters included in the New Testament is ascribed to him; and we hear his voice in Saint John’s account of the Last Supper, where he is distinguished as “the other Judas, not Iscariot.” Judas Iscariot was the disciple who betrayed Jesus, and the fact that Jude shared the traitor’s name made Christians reluctant to ask for his prayers. For this reason Jude is considered the patron saint of what is shunned by the world, especially lost causes and those who suffer from incurable diseases. All Saints Is commemorated on Friday, November 1, of this week. The church also believes that our earth has eternal consequences; and so our remembrance of what the saints were is directed to what they are. It is the Church’s conviction – a conviction often expressed in the Anglican tradition – that the saints continue to be our partners and fellow-servants before the face of God’s glory. We pary for our present needs, and the saints pray with us – not as if their prayers were btter than our own, but becuae thay are still bound to us in mutual service as members of the one body of Christ.
