Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost | November 8, 2015 | 10:30 am

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.

VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The celebration of the Eucharist would be nothing but a romantic or aesthetic sensation should you forget that the heart of it is the self-giving of Jesus. The sacrifice of yourself for the sake of others is the single foundation of every community. Unite yourself with the Lord, then, in a fruitful and acceptable offering for the life of the world. Each day you are nourished at the Lord’s table and filled with His riches. So be ready to break the bread of your life for the poor and hungry everywhere in the world. Keep nothing for yourself but share with the others all you have received from God’s tenderness. In the bread of the Eucharist and the cup of blessing Christ’s presence is revealed at its most intense. Let your life be permeated with a tremendous reverence towards this mystery of faith. Your adoration needs no justification more than your love and wonder for the infinite, delicate grandeur of God, the unfathomable depth of Christ’s gift. Let His praise not depart from your lips. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Ruth. Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, I need to seek some security for you, so that it may be well with you. Now here is our kinsman Boaz, with whose young women you have been working. See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. Now wash and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, observe the place where he lies; then, go and uncover his feet and lie down; and he will tell you what to do." She said to her, "All that you tell me I will do." So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When they came together, the Lord made her conceive, and she bore a son. Then the women said to Naomi, "Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without next-of-kin; and may his name be renowned in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age;

for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has borne him." Then Naomi took the child and laid him in her bosom, and became his nurse. The women of the neighbourhood gave him a name, saying, "A son has been born to Naomi." They named him Obed; he became the father of Jesse, the father of David. Ruth 3:1-5, 4:13-17

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Hear my teaching, O my people; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will declare the mysteries of ancient times. Antiphon That the generations to come might know, and the children yet unborn; that they in their turn might tell it to their children; So that they might put their trust in God, and not forget the deeds of God, but keep his commandments. Antiphon Psalm 78:1-2, 6-7

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. HOLY GOSPEL Celebrant People Celebrant People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. As Jesus taught, he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honour at banquets! They devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." Mark 12:38-44

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Last weekend saw St James' at its best: the uplifting worship and inspiring music offered on Sunday for the Feast of All Saints and on Monday for the Commemoration of All Souls alongside active engagement with our neighbourhood through the Bargain Sale on Friday and Open House on Saturday, with the Nisga'a dancers, the guided tour, and the presentation of Dorothy L Sayers' Kings in Judea. Thanks are due to the many people who worked hard to make this so successful. As the poster described it, St James' "in the Heart of God in the Heart of the City": our vocation is to be here to serve God in our worship and in our neighbour. To live out this vocation continues to be a challenge. At the Special Vestry next Sunday we shall set a budget for the coming year. You will see then that we are struggling to make ends meet simply maintaining

our present pattern of ministry. In the coming year we shall need to ask radical questions: are we prepared to take risks, to look outwards, to consider expanding our ministry, “to cast our bread upon the waters”? Or will we continue to look only inwards, to further reduction in provision, and to continuing decline? One area of opportunity is our proposed refurbishment of the Rectory and the Crypt, the embryonic plans for which look exciting. Another area I think it will be important to consider is how feasible is it to sustain our current level of ministry and worship, let alone develop it, with only one full-time priest. Please continue to pray for St James' as we seek to discern together how we are being called to serve God in and from this place.

COMMEMORATION St. Martin Bishop of Tours, 397 November 11

Today the Church honours Martin, a fourth-century bishop of Tours who was “filled with power from on high” — and used it to serve the poor and strengthen the faithful in their witness to Christ. Martin was a soldier by profession, but renounced military life when he accepted the gospel and became a catechumen, which is the Church’s name for someone preparing for baptism. There is a story which shows that he already understood what his new life required of him. He was riding into Amiens when he met a beggar who was almost naked, and he cut his soldier’s cloak in half in order to clothe the man. The following night he had a dream in which he saw Christ himself wrapped in half of a soldier’s cloak and saying, “Martin, a mere catechumen, covered me with his garment.” After his baptism Martin spent several years wandering, then settled near Poitiers and built himself a little shelter where he lived and prayed as a monk. Other Christians in quest of perfection began to gather around him, and he eventually organized the first monastic community in France. In the year 372 he was elected bishop of Tours, but he continued to live as a monk, dwelling in a bare cell and holding no property for himself, even as he cared for the people of his diocese. He also launched a continuing mission to the pagan country folk in his district, and took an active part in the wider life of the Church. Even before his death in the year 397 Martin became the subject of a biography which concentrated on his miraculous powers and ensured his fame as a wonder-worker down through the Middle Ages. Today we do not forget the powers that God bestowed on him, but prefer to remember how he used them — for the peace of the Church, for the spread of the gospel, for leading the faithful in the way of holiness, and for mercy to the poor. COMMEMORATION Charles Simeon Priest, 1836 November 12

Charles Simeon was an Anglican priest who died in 1836 after fifty-four years of ministry at Cambridge University, where he was a spiritual guide for innumerable students and a shining light in the Evangelical Revival of his day. Simeon went to Cambridge as a serious young man who imposed such burdens on his own conscience that he experienced the Eucharist as an occasion of guilt, not gladness. Then, as he prepared to make his Easter communion in 1780, he came to know worthiness in Christ alone, and when he received the Sacrament on Easter morning he experienced the sweetness and beauty of the risen Christ in his own life. From that moment he devoted himself to helping others know the same joy. After his graduation Simeon remained at Cambridge, took Holy Orders, and was appointed Vicar of Holy Trinity, the University church. His enthusiasm for Christ was considered vulgar by academics and townspeople alike, and rowdy students often disrupted worship in his church. But his faithfulness as a pastor, especially towards those who suffered during a local famine, finally outmatched the hostility and by 1800 his spiritual authority was unrivalled. Simeon won his greatest fame in the pulpit, where he preached sermons which were passionate in their delivery and powerful in communicating the vibrant joy of salvation in Christ. But he exercised his most enduring influence at “conversation parties,” where he entertained undergraduates and provided them with tea and serious discussion as an alternative to the drunkenness, idleness, and bullying which beset their peers. These parties formed several generations of students and gave them a fervent commitment to Christ, so that Simeon had a truly evangelical impact which reached far beyond Cambridge and was felt in all corners of England long after his death.
